I'm modding an ancient version of Minecraft and doing all sorts of things to it. What graphical tricks would you consider 'advanced' for a game that primarily uses OpenGL 1.x?

Doing filters like fake bloom and scanlines is weird
Screen space occlusion culling, lighting and other shader-like behavior by drawing a low res version of the scene with hashed colors to objects and reading it back with glReadPixels
