Why did it fail?
iphone had the app that let you tilt it so it looked like you were drinking beer
It was not made in java.
>>108722405No apps at all and developers didn't really bother with updating the apps that were on it. People also generally considered it as a business phone rather than an every man phone.
>>108722405They came in late and had very little software compared to the competition and once windows phones became the most returned smartphone type cell carries stopped trying to sell them to people
>>108722405If I recall correctly, no Snapchat or Instagram. How am I, a professional business man, supposed to have a sneaky link without those two vital applications?I quite liked windows phones though personally
>>108722433>I quite liked windows phones though personallySame, I thought the UI was really cool. I installed a custom launcher on my Nexus at the time to make it look just like it with the tiles lol.
>>108722405microsoft, unironically. nokia would still be a big player in the mobile phone business had they gone with android instead of winblows
>>108722405because no one cares about microsoft's disgusting attempts to create "touch-based" softwaremicrosoft could've stuck to PC like they were supposed to, and not create windows 8, 8.1, 10 and 11, and maybe that would've stopped all the normies from moving to mac
>>108722405By the time this came out nobody wanted a Windows phone. It had no support for regular x86 programs and there was no third party support for apps. They also tried pushing it along with Windows 8 which a lot of people resented since Windows 7 was an almost perfect OS that was being killed and they didn't want that stupid Metro design which the phone featured even more.
Every app was a janky windows explorer wrapper. It was terrible. The phone itself was awesome though.
1. There was Apps, but Google prohibited use of their APIs on the platform and sued everyone using them. There was no official Google Maps, YouTube, Gmail, etc. Microsoft invested heavily on HERE Maps but it was unrealistic to compete against Google Maps, same with YouTube. There was Snapchat, and Instagram.2. Microsoft changed the SDK three fucking times with no compatibility between them, this fucked up everyone who did publish their apps in the platform. This is why most apps ended up being web wrappers.3. There are some merits to recognize to Windows Phone, they were the first on bringing a working mobile desktop with Continuum, which was the first implementation of a desktop from an smartphone only by connecting USB C output to a display. The Live Tiles were absolutely great, to this day, it cannot be recreated on Android even with their tile launchers. And the quality of the devices was one of the best during their first three years.4. Nokia SOLD the smartphone branch, Microsoft got the rights to use "Nokia" as a brand on their phones for a couple of years before finally changing the brand to "Microsoft". Same happened when Microsoft sold it to HMD, they got the right to use "Nokia" for a couple of years, now they can only use their own brand. The real NOKIA is doing telecomm business and doing all right.
>>108722405I had the 1020, and it outperformed modern Android phones. It was just a dual-core processor with 2 GB of RAM, but damn, it was fast. I liked the tiles, too. Now, we only have Android and iOS. It sucks.
There weren't as many incels back then. Today it would succeed.
>>108722417but during the stone age... in 2009 you wouldn't have to think twice!they tried to do java for everything back then for phones, games, everything. didnt work out.
>>108722405Microsoft half assed it, as they do with everything. I actually had one of these, it had absolute insane potential but was absolutely wasted due to basically nothing back then being supported on these.
>>108722405It couldn't handle the microwave.
I had 520 and it was great.
>>108722405You don’t really care.
>>108722433it was before those existed
>>108722433>a sneaky linki bet you're 5foot3 and have an attitude
lack of official snapchat and instagram support. that's it. if windows phone supported snapchat and instagram, then it'd still be around today. same with blackberry OS.
>>108722405Because MS killed Nokia and the Windnlows Phone could never take the place of a great titan that Nokia once was.
During 2012, 13 and 14 I used an LG Windows phone, a Google Nexus, and a BlackBerry Z10 and Z30. BlackBerry was by far the best and it's a tragedy they had to give up. The Windows phone was nothing special, though I guess I only had an earlier model. Android had/has nothing going for it except apps. BlackBerry made an android runtime so you could run APKs on BlackBerry 10, making it the perfect phone operating system. Unfortunately it had issues with not having Google play services and stuff like >>108722635 said and it was definitely too janky for normies.
Nokia still churns out cheap ass phones though. Honestly if it had Android and NFC I would get one.
>>108722405either jeet quality apps or no apps at allbeen there and saw itos was fine tho compared to androids on the same hardware
>>108722433This completely predated your zoomer apps you fucking zoomer.Kill yourself
>>108724407I hate zoomer takes so fucking muchYour generation is completely fucking devoid of anything remotely resembling intelligence.
>>108724949they happened at the same time idiot
>>108724891these aren't nokia, they're licensed chinko garbage
>>108722405App Gap. Lack of ecosystem.Ironic, isn't it. For Microsoft to feel what it's like.
>>108725106Learn to use google ffs.
>>108722411I can only have a phone that I can make a cracking whip noise with.
>>108723254Yeah this was Microsoft jumping in and expecting instant success in a very short time without doing enough. Seems to track with essentially everything they fucking do. And it makes no sense since they're so fucking large they could easily afford to take the financial hit purely to gain market share. I feel like their whole corporate structure is fucked, like most companies are, and they just want those immediate charts showing numbers increasing without actually accounting for real world impact. Imagine what they'd have if they kept at it, and the mobile market is like the largest consumer tech space now with both major companies being fucking locked down garbage now
>>108722405app selection was just really weak, it was never going to survivethat being said I really liked the two Nokias I had
This is at least the sixth time I see this thread, and I don't even check the board every day. I honestly can't tell if this is literal autism from the only person on earth who liked this garbage, or it's just that to keep the illusion of activity there's a bot reposting threads every other day.
it was miserable having to give up windows mobile / windows phone in 2018 after using it for ~13 years; I have used launcher 10 and now use square home on my android phones to capture the tile based layout of windows phoneI still hit the volume button expecting media controls to appear, always painfully reminded that was a windows phone feature>>108722405microsoft rested on their laurels when iphone was released, meaning they were playing catch up as it took a footholdtoward the end, they decided on a new strategy for developers and the ecosystem every 6 to 12 monthstheir market share was low and new apps simply didn't want to deal with a third less popular platform to target/supportthe were not seen as trendy like the iphone, even android was more trendythe abysmal failure of the kin on verizon soured the relationship and it took them fucking years to get the new windows phone on the best carrier in the us>>108722411someone made one for windows phone>>108722417it took android like 10 years to get something that can even sort of run that trash in a performant way, the phones need a fuckload of ram because of the shitty java overhead>>108722446sounds like someone never touched a windows phone; the experience was top notchalso, if you used windows 8 on a surface and only ran metro uwp applications, it wasn't badthe key is that windows on a computer thrives on applications that don't follow that design paradigm and that is what hurt their push toward itlikewise, go look at windows mobile; they shimmed conventional windows applications into a phone interface and it was clunky (but I fucking loved it)
It was ahead of its time.
>>108722476>It had no support for regular x86 programsthis is a stupid statement>that stupid Metro design which the phone featured even morebecause it worked really well on a touch interface>>108722596this doesn't even make sense>>108722635here wasn't bad, I don't remember any problems using it
>>108724407yes, the lack of the popular up and coming social apps (like snapchat, whose ceo famously announced they would never release a windows phone version) really impacted market share toward the end>>108724949>>108724989yes, zoomers are fucking retarded with shitty takes .... however, if you think that not having instagram and snapchat wasn't a massive adoption issue for windows phone, you are just as fucking retarded for denying a simple fact>>108725966iirc, balmer has said that his biggest regret is not sticking with windows phonethey sunk a shitload of money in, expected instant results, those didn't happen so they sunk a shitload of money in repeating the cycleI hope that what microsoft did with windows phone is being taught in business classes, it's a bunch of shitty mismanagement that killed it off
>>108724182no it wasn’t and you’re a faggot zoomzoom that failed at the simple task of using a search engine
>>108722405The ability to make Apple/Android program is free, but not windows phone.
I had one and it was great, took fantastic photos and was built so strong I ran it without a case. Didn't give a fuck about apps, it had a gameboy and SNES emulator and that was good enough for me.
>>108726670Ain't saying much, my old Palm Treo had NES/SNES/Genesis emulators.
>>108726683It wasn't anything special but I was impressed coming from a flip phone with tetris on it and an ipod that could play pac man. Suddenly I was playing Pokemon and Chrono Trigger again from my childhood which was neat for a first smartphone.
>>108726670I remember playing a 3D version of nethack on my windows nokia phone, it was pretty great but the os wasn't very stable or smooth, android won for good reason and it's probably good that it did
>>108722405It was actually a decent device, just didn't have any apps
nearly did not but microsoft soon noticed that there is no market
>>108724989It wasn't about those apps specifically, it was that it was marketed too strongly as a business phone. No fun allowed, serious business only, and the general public didn't want that.
>>108725966They tried charging developers $99/year because Apple was doing the same. So not only were major apps not on the platform, most small developers stayed away too. By the time the company reversed course, it was far too late. After they dropped the $99 fee, they started offering money for every app published, which resulted in tons of poorly coded shovelware from Indians who knew no one would use their app but $20 for each of thirty apps, each slight variations of each other, was itself a nice bit of cash.
>>108724891>No wifi>Same old shitty camera>Same old shitty screen>Same old shitty OS>Same old shitty CPU>Expensive>Fragile
is end at near as playstore soon requires gov id to app develop
>>108727778many year later mobile ??640 series processor as powerfull as 2014 desktops must be alienjews
>>108727778$50
>>108727825Expensive for it is and what you get
>>108727825You can buy smartphone for nearly that:Moto e15 is under $100
>>108724284just hiding from my Gen Z boss in her mini
>>108722405Even while iPhone and Android were booming, carriers loved Nokia: Symbian was still printing money, and MeeGo would be the next big thing. But then Stephen Elop shat out his retarded 'burning platforms' memo to force the move to Windows Phone, so carriers were furious and refused to put their weight behind it.
>>108722405marketing? and also because of the failure to get a base no one wanted to develop for it >>108722441>>108726583this too
>>108722405I had one and I liked it. Problem is no app
>>108722405Google was really shitty about letting their apps be on this and just gave people dogshit webrappers. Microsoft mismanaged it and had CONSTANT issues with simple shit after windows phone 8, media library would break constantly and there was pretty much no first party solution to anything outside banking. To its credit some really good apps did come out of it like mytube which gave you adfree HD youtube at the time but were always breaking when google was feeling vindictive. The 4chan app was pretty great too, despite microshits lack of proper codec support.
Flop
>>108722405No apps.Could have been great.
>>108722405Because YouTube refused to make an app for it. Also true of all the others. No dedicated apps -> it's a dumb phone now.
I think they didn't attract enough developers fast enough. I remember trying my friends, and the apps were limited. With Google and Apple having such a large market share, and mobile OS's being extremely time consuming, you have to deliver apps fast and at scale. Devs were already making enough money from Apple and Android so saw no reason to switch.
>>108725648drrrrooiiidd...

No one really likes flatshit
>>108722405I liked mine, but as most said the lack of support killed it.
>>108726573 nice blogpost unc aint readin itwindows phone suxx
>>108722405Imagine buying a phone with no Youtube, it was fucking ass.Competition was fucking brutal, and Microsoft is terrible at B2C and their software is inferior to anything Apple and Google do
>>108722405They hard reset the API like 3 or 4 times, forcing devs to rewrite apps for each new OS version.>>108725126More like they took dominance for granted if they could just spend enough money giving away hardware and subsidizing apps. Then they discovered the hard way the phone space is really huge and nobody has that kind of money.>>108734920Problems nobody had because this was like 5 years before they started killing 3rd party front-ends.
