do these cheap ass external ssd connectors actually work??i got a spare ssd now that i replace the one in my laptop for 2tbs but now i got this 500gb ssd just sitting around doing nothing and its kind of a waste so im planning on just buying a connector and use it like a hard drive basically but again im not sure if these things actually will work
>2 usb plug1 of them is for powering the HDD/SSD1 of them is normal data transfer to computer. In the old days, I usually find a 12v plug with these, but now it looks like its fully usb powered, which is great. So it will likely take 2 USB ports. But also, if you're simply running sata ssds, then you prob dont need the separate power usb plug. The separate usb power is for larger 3.5in HDD and not the 2.5in ssd.
an AI thread died for this
>>108723312Also, I run a 500GB sata ssd with these adapter (without separate power since its just sata 2.5in drive)
>>108723290I'd prefer one that could also do the 3.5" drives>>108723316>an AI thread died for thiskek
>>108723312>>108723319sooo... yes? i got la ton of old large files that im planning to put on my old ssd, alot of them are game installers from you-know-where
>>108723290They do. I have one I bought for 50 cents and it works just fine. The only problem of course is that it doesn't work with regular 3.5" HDDs, but there are more expensive adapters with external power bricks that can do it.
>>108723290For the 2.5" drives you don't even need the second USB plug for power. It should get enough from a single port. For 3.5" drives you need external power, because they use 12V as well.
>>108723290Should probably work for SSDs since they don't use much power. Will likely not work for HDDs because do actually need more power to run, so a device like that likely won't cut it.
>>108723290i dont know shit about cheap ass connectors, i use chink craphttps://www.orico.cc/index.php/index/product/detail/944.htmlhttps://www.amazon.com/ORICO-Transparent-External-Enclosure-TB-6139U3/dp/B01MR4VDFGhttps://www.ebay.com/itm/195923274077it's unwieldy and the blue light is shit, but it works for me. i play some games stored at an external ssd with this thing.
>>108723290they work but dont expect anywhere near full speed. it says USB 3.0 on the tin but you'll get 2.0 speeds
>>108723454listen man if it can even get 200 mbps im good
>>108723454That depends on your usb port. >>108723358 yes they work fine
>>108723290Hit or miss.Anything relating to sata to USB is very flaky and lemon scented. It spans the range from only causing an error every now that's invisibly handled to just hanging on large transfers. The only saving grace is they are so cheap where you can get multiple of them.
Yeah, works fine, with SMART and everything. 3.5" HDDs need a power brick plugging into the adapter.
>>108723358>from you-know-wheresuprnova.org? black-cat games?
>>108723290I have something similar (JSAUX, probably generic china thing from amazon, I can't remember). It works with all my 2,5" drives (Seagate, Toshiba, Western Digital) and all my SSDs (Intenso, SanDisk, Kingston).
>>108723347>SwitchHe probably has a few switches desu.
>>108723290These have always sucked shit for me, I've had better luck gutting the connector chips out of old external HDD cases.
>>108724010how about when it comes to transporting large ass files like game installers, something lets say 20gigs, does it hang a lot?
>>108723290they do with both ssd and 2.5 hdd, i don't see why would you need two usb plugs, single one is enough to power an 2.5 hdd, even used them to run my os when i was too lazy to open the case
>>108723290>dual usb to try to fix the power shortagenot that one. get one with external power. sure, your 2.5" ssd may not need it, but one day you might want to power a 3.5" hdd.
Just don’t expect transfer speeds up to spec. Otherwise they work pretty well.
>>108723290They work fine in my experience, but the cheap one that I had stopped working after a while.
I had some issues with 2.5" HDDs but never with SSDs. I guess it's a voltage problem in the chinkshit USB chips or cables
>>108723290yes but its generally cheap chinese junk that dont last long
>>108723290Get a 3.5/2.5 dock, preferably dual, you can then clone, mount both 2.5 and 3.5 drives simultaneously, copy between them, yadda, you'll thank yourself later. And you can throw in an included SD card reader for about $20 total. Next, a 'proper' 2.5 usb drive case is about $5, so's a proper 3.5, and you can now copy between these drives if needed. tldr, those cheapest crap cable adapters are just going to be an insecure PITA to put somewhere, be about 50x more likely to throw up errors and for what you are saving over something 50x more secure, portable and actually useful, it's not worth it.
>>108723290they do. I've been running RPi with OS stored on a HDD plugged in via one of these. worked stable for years.
I use a sata-usb adapter for my boot drive when using early uefi boards from the fx/haswell era that shit themselves when trying to boot an efi drive
>>108723290They work, but they're usually shit for SSDs. Better to pair them with 2.5" HDDs instead, so the throughput isn't gimped as severely (relatively speaking; obviously the USB speed is the same but you're not losing as much with a HDD's slower IO speed compared to an SSD). Depends mostly on what it says the speed is. I have a cheap one that says it does 5Gb/s transfer speeds, and loading an SSD off that in any meaningful capacity is a pain with constant bottlenecks and pauses. A faster one might do better.>>108723312Separate 12v plugs are usually for the bigger adapters that power full fat 3.5" drives.
>>108723290what I dont understand is why these arent USB C by now and allow bigger power draw to support the operations
>>108723290should have got a real laptop with two 2.5" bays like mine.
>>108724810there are things that just don't come with usbc. try to find a usbc wifi dongle.
>>108724823yeah but wifi dongles dont use much power, usually ~1-2w max. while USB HDD/SSD utilize upwards of 10wstandard USB 3 power caps at 4.5W, more than enough for wifi
>>108723290I bought a 10 dollar one that four ports that are sata/ide for both 3.5 and 2.5 drives, it works pretty well though it's a little slow.
>>108724810Because they were invented by a western company a decade+ ago, then that company died because they foolishly used chinese factories, which promptly cloned them into the dirt for pennies. Because the chinese companies pumped them out until the market was flooded they have no reason to make more because there's no one to tell them to change it
>>108724883Do me a favour and run it thru diskmark
>>108723290Expect SATA 2 speeds which is a little slow but not awful even in 2026.
>>108724810>>108724859I think it speaks with market positioning.Shit is for people with old PCs, especially the WIFI dongles as anyone with a Type-C port likely has WiFi already even on a desktop. No reason to make anything modern for an older desktop.Same with USB to SATA, the style of adapter in the OP is meant to be cheap as dirt. Likely for people who are also cheap and run an older PCYou can buy a type C version for a few bucks more.
I have the one where you put it in the box and it just werks
>>108723290they work fine, pic related used two of these to clone around 15 hdd's to an ssdthis one also has 12v barrel jack for mechanical disks, the adapter doesn't come with it though, but I'm sure you have a 12v adapter laying around somewhere
>>108725895forgot the pic
>>108723290Sometimes. I bought four similar (without extra power) and only one of them worked. Chinese cables are always a gamble.
>>108723316good
>>108723290i've mainly used these with ssds to boot my pi off ofthey are kind of hit or miss 2bh
>>108723290They should work fine but you have to be careful not to unplug it accidentally.I prefer the SATA dock style that looks like a toaster because with them gravity helps keep it in place.
>>108723290Yes, and mine doesn't even have the second usb plug, though only used it with 2.5in disks
Aren't there pcie sata connectors?
>>108723290Yes for 2.5" SSD... Yes for even 2.5 HDD... Def no on 3.5" HDD
>>108723290From my experience these connectors only ever worked for HDDs not sure whyTry transfering like 10gigs and watch as it hangs on SDDs while it's fine on HDDs but maybe because mine is missing the second usb connector? I only have the one
>>108723290YES, it will work, but these dual-cable adapters usually have outdated controllers, even USB 2.0 adapters with speeds up to 1 TB are quite slow. It's better to buy a single-cable adapter with USB 3.0, which has an updated controller (also up to 1 TB). It will also work better with a 2.0 port.
>>108727720For 2.5" disks
yes with exception of PS3 maybe other gaming consoles too
>>108723290I have that connector but it only works for laptop hdds and ssds. For big bulky HDDs you need a bay with its own power supply.
>>108723290You do move your laptop around a lot? Personally I had bad experiences with any kind of Drive being connect through USB cables. Sometimes laptop manufacturers cheap out on USB ports and more often times, USB cables themselves tend to be even more cheapen out on. I had several external HDD but the USB port on my laptop must have went bad or really weak that any tiny bit of movement would disconnect the drives. At first I figured it was the shitty cable but since this happened with another external Drive, I figured it was the USB ports however I tried both externals on a desktop and still had random disconnects so I just never trust USB cables in general for storage. And if the drive is formatted to exFAT, you are truly fucked if they ever have random disconnects. Not saying you'll have the same problem as me, just blogging about my shitty time with externals Drives which sounds like what you're trying to do, turning an internal drive into an external drive. You really don't want any movement happening to those drives, bad USB/ports or not. Even just the slightest movement from a wobbly desk from typing too hard could cause problems. I don't think internal SSD will have this problem though. HDD's on the other hand need anti-gravity measures.
>>108723290I bought one of those sata enclosures the transparent cheap ones and it worked wonderfully on my HDDs but not on SSDs, like if I try to transfer large files say 40 gigs it would be no problem on my HDDs a little slow but it will get there I can reliably transfer said fileBut when I put my SSD on the enclosure and try to move the same 40gb file it just rapidly drops in speed before ultimately reaching 0 kbps... I'm assuming it's a power issue? I don't know what do you anons think?? Would this connector work for SSDs? It's got 2 usb connections and I'm assuming one is dedicated to power
>>108728411for context this is what im referring to:once again HDDs no problem works wonderfully, SSDs not so much like I said transfer speed rapidly slows down until it eventually reaches 0kbps
ye
>>108723290Yes it works. Bought one looking like that except with only one usb connector. I guess ssd doesn't need electricity like hard drive needed.
>>108723290
>>108728411your ssd is probably overheating and slowing itself down to not die because it's enclosed.try it again but without the plastic enclosure.i have a bare bones version that doesn't have a case and just rest my SSD on top of my case where there's a fan blowing under it, i've even played games off of it with no issues.
>>108730354ey someone replied, ok ill try it without the cover and transfer some files update you later
I had success using them before, but specifically with a barrel jack in it, not dual USB ports.Mines worked for 2 and 3, with adaptor for the big 3.5 bois.Definitely in my box of useful shit I keep on me at all times in case of emergencies.
>>108730354update:nope it definitley lasted longer but same problem still arises, transfer speeds just goes down to the kilobytes, guess i need to buy whatever OP is buying
>>108730699dumb question, but does it do the same thing when plugged into your motherboard on a sata cable?it could just be the cache getting filled. if you saw a noticable improvement on just removing it from the case maybe you need to actively cool it.
>>108730699for comparison this is with the HDD this time, no problems just the SSD dosent work
>>108723358Yes they work, but try buying one at least usb 3.0
