Not trying to shit talk or argue, just wondering why, genuinely why would you still use Windows 7 when GNU/+Linux is established enough and will run more software than Windows 7, and that is without jumping through hoops.
You clearly do not need Windows for anything since you're using one that is so outdated that it runs less software than GNU/+Linux, if not that, at least go to W10LTSC because you're clearly not runinng an offline machine.

GNUnix is easily accessible in a virtual machine. W10 has a remote kill switch, it kills bios on a motherboard, also it has a warbird trojan. its okay to play games or do tests on it, but for programming W7 is optimal, it is still not very much polluted with a threading mud.

yeah, I know, but in this one instance I found it acceptable. Threw this guy $5 for a month to get access to the second system stuff. Perhaps the most worthwhile money I've spent on software. Pretty much the only money I've ever spent, lol.

I figured even though I hate paying for software at all, I should put my money where my mouth is because when I was struggling with dropped support for 7 I remember getting mad and posting on here how I would genuinely pay $500 or something for a version of windows 7 that just works forever.

so, $5 for making my installation of 7 work even if just for another few years is very much worth it to me.

Window XP and windows 7 developer here.
So 99% of our binaries generated on Win 7 work fine on Win11.
It’s largely a zoomer/millennial/developer issue if it doesn’t.
One thing that doesn’t work is the latest encryption nonsense found in tls 1.2 but it’s only a probkem if you’re using the built-in Windows SSL stuff.
>>
>>108735993
As stated earlier, the main standing issue is that mouse inputs are not recognised on many new Unity games.
We're not talking about Win7 stuff on Win11, to be clear. The other way around.
>>
>>108735981
XP comes from a time where you had little, no, or improper natting on your internet connection or dial-up. You’s come home to thousands of net message pop-ups and have to close them.
By SP 3 it was pretty much hardened against everything.
Modern windows 11 has an enormous new and changing attack surface, it’s almost certainly much less secure.
>>
>>108736032
> that mouse inputs are not recognised on many new Unity games
That’s odd. I’m guessing they’re installing custom mouse usb drivers where it’s screwing it up for Win7. Anti-Cheat? Can’t use your old 12-button mouse?
Most likely the zoomers at unity are taking advantage of some useless devkit macro or something that breaks on Win7 because they copied the latest sample code.

>>108735981
yes, it is good for OS developer to have sources open and easily compilable. why do you need them open?

GNUnix always projected as a server OS, it is intended to run like a blackbox providing services. it has worse modularity than windows's "DLL hell" and as a result everything must be re-compiled for certain distro.

one example its worse for development:

recently i made a memory allocator that is group based, so on windows i used an undocumented "NtQuerySystemInformation" function to get memory page size that is used in offsets calculations. when i switched to Linux implementation i found that there is no sane way to get memory page size but to read some file at the /proc path, that is 3 syscalls (no libc) compared to 1, i cannot afford it now, i simply put a temporary stub, like

#define MEM_PAGE_SIZE 4096

so it could be changed manually. that shows Linux as less "dynamic" OS if you like
>>
>>108729308
Doing everything but install Linux
>>
>>108736062
They've changed the way they check for mouse input by using IsMouseInPointerEnabled function in winuser.h which is W8+
>>
>>108737372
Fuck, I erased half the post while sending, I'm getting tired.
I was gonna add that IsMouseInPointerEnabled is just a function to check for the mouse, I have no idea what Unity uses to register mouse input itself, because VxKex Next actually override the check but it basically just makes the mouse not work in games that don't use the legacy input detection.
