do laptops truly need 32+ GB RAM or should you just use a desktop at that point? 8 should be enough
>>
>>108726922
32gb is needed, yes.
want to run a VM or two?
want to build programs fast?
want to have a hypervisor?
need VMs (or xen) to move up security
>>
a thread died for this retarded question
>>

I just had to restart my browser because I only have 32GB of RAM on this laptop and I was 10GB in swap. All browser. I only had about 30 tabs active, like most 4chan users. Max out the RAM if you can't upgrade it later.
>>
>>108726922
when I worked in IT I told people to get as much as they could afford.
>>
i might buy 2x4GB if it were cheaper and with better timings than 2x8GB
>>
my laptop has 8gb of ram which turns into 6.5gb when vram is taken into account

with windows 11 it's unusable. even in GNOME it hits max usage, starts swapping, and gets really hot/freezes if i have multiple browsers open
>>
>>108726922
If you use docker or local ai sloppa then 32gb is neat
if you’re a facebook mom, not really
>>
>>108726922
depends on what you use anon
>>
>>108726922
if the fat bitch is so upset about her man igboring her, get in the fucking gym
>>
>>108726922
MacBooks are exactly the same as Mac desktops, so "you should use a desktop at this point" is never the answer
>>
My Lunar Lake laptop 258v is fucking fantastic. It has 32gb soldered to the CPU and it works great for AUTOCAD, games and general use. Too bad it has the meme scheduler and forces me to use Windows 11, but as a technology its incredible. Battery life is great. I am a happy windows goycuck.

You have to be really conscious about what programs you use and how much resources they use. You have to trim down browser tabs regularly. You can't just open everything you want all day and only tab over to it when you need it you have to close shit you're not using. You can make it work even with 8 but 16gb will give you so much breathing room. If the prices ever get reasonable again I'm going straight to 64. 8 makes you feel like some old timey chemist constantly balancing a bunch of burners and beakers. It's a humiliation ritual. The only way to do it comfortably is to become a tiling window manager cli for everything fag on linux. Everything else will rape you for daring to open more than 4 things at once. Don't even think about Windows 11.

I'm still on 4GB and it works for me.

Its so odd. In 2017, I got an 8gb ram laptop that ran win10, VR, additional displays....made the mistake of updating it around October of last year and now it runs slow as shit, takes ages to open My Documents, VR is dead, Cortana is kill...

What the fuck happened? Why does opening a website suddenly use up 4gb of ram?? I'm scared to run Steam now bros wtf
Also, am very sad that Cortana is dead. VR WORKED with Cortana running on 8gb of cheap shit and they KILLED IT ALL
so I just give up, I'm poor and I'm not building a liquid nitrogen plumbing rig just so I can keep several tabs open at once while the government and MS mine crypto in the background.
I'll only be convinced to get more ram if Honey Select 3 comes out
>>
With soldered ram I went with 32gb, similar to >>108730774
>>
>>108732205
Let me guess.
You went from Windows 7 to 11?

I would set fire to all the anime and put a baby in that foid immediately
I know it's AI btw

8 is probably enough for linux but windows on 8gb is lmao tier.

More ram is always better. I don't think anybody really needs 16gb in the average normie sphere but as you get into more computer heavy shit (even gaming) you're gonna need more. Laptops run VMs and docker containers and just the general tomfuckery of chromes memory hog is just lmao. so I think going to 32 on laptops is fine. Hell, laptop processing is pretty fucking good these days too so you don't really need a desktop for most shit.
>>
>>108732205
>Why does opening a website suddenly use up 4gb of ram??
Because websites all have 6,000,000 plugins and scripts that connect to 6,000,000 other services and APIs as soon as you type in the URL. The volume of data being exchanged with a simple website is probably 100x greater than 10 years ago.
>>
>>108732594
How can we change that?
I mean, why big corp do that, what did they earn from it, and what solution exists to reduce this?

the better question is why you would even consider using a laptop
>>
>>108726922

I lucked out and got 64GB in 2023. You’d think it’s other worldly fast, and it kinda is. Sadly it’s gimped by Windows 11 in my case. Windows XP on 384MB of RAM and an AMD Ass alon processor competes with it.
>>
>>108726922
16gb is more than fine in a laptop if you're just using it as a casual laptop.

I had 32GB in my personal Dell laptop and saw the trouble on the horizon and snagged a PNY 64GB DDR4 SODIMM kit for $99. I had to wait 2 months for the back ordered stock to be delivered. It was worth it.

>>108726922
I look like this and so does my wife.
>>
>>108726922
My laptop has 16GB, it's enough to use Krita with the built in digitizer, otherwise I mostly use it to remote into my desktop. My handheld PC on the other hand has 64GB but 32GB on a laptop should be sufficient for most intermediate skill computer users. Basic normalfags that only use a browser for faceberg and bird site should be able to get by with 8GB or a lapdock for their cellphone.

I have 6 gigs of memory on this old Toshiba Satellite running Debian with Gn*me. It's usable as a daily driver but I think it would struggle a lot to run VMs and anything like that.
>>
>>108726970
Dunno how you guys manage this, I can open 150 tabs and not go past 20gb of ram used. I literally disable swap because its functionally useless to me

>>108732752
Ad blockers are essential, because they remove running parts of pages, making them lighter.

Most 4channers are ultra high res illegal porn aficionados that's why they have these threads as well as claiming they need encrypted printing and other crazy stuff

my laptop has 24GB RAM, I run big docker containers, have multiple Zed programs open plus Figma and it runs perfect.
No ragrets

>2x8gb 3200mhz ram laptop
>have 2x8gb 2400mhz ram lying around
>laptop have 2 free slots, insert them because why not
>noticed system actually feel snappier despite the speed downgrade
well, at least for me the answer is yes
maybe you don't need it if all you're doing is troonix ricing though
