Terrible desktop metaphor, there is no point of using a so called """desktop""" environment when it's as limited if not more as a Window manager.

I love GNOME, don't get the hate. Probably because people want to be tinkertrannies and customize all the settings when GNOME genuinely just sort of works out of the box

macOS but worse, since it has a shitty file manager, no tray icons and somehow a more insufferable cult behind it

It was a mishmash of GTK2-centric apps still using gconf ported to GTK3. The software stack was GNOME3+ified long before GNOME 4 was a thing.

>>
>>108729503
Yeah but the ports to gtk3 was done retaining most, if not all, original functions, conversely gtk4 "ports" are butchered rewroots
>>
>>108729527
The GTK4 ports are basically clones of the prior software thanks to libhandy. It's mostly a cosmetic change to libadwaita.
GNOME 4 doesn't even use GTK4 until version 42 or so.
>>
>>108729540
>basically
Most of original feature are either missing or hidden in some convoluted way, on top of everything they are way costly in terms of resources. For example, recently i had to use an old potato pc i have as spare because my main was getting repaired, i was testing some shit and booted a xfce live on qemu set with 4GB ram, i launched web (the gtk4 epiphany browser) and the whole thing was bogged down to the point of unusability (just by launching the application, not even because of opening a web page), the same conf running chromium or firefox was slow but still usable. Epiphany used to be snappy and responsive.

>Fuck Nazis, GNOME is Antifa
What happened?
>>
>>108729630
I've never had issues with Epiphany's resource hogging. The problems only start when I try to do modern web things on it, and then it doesn't even matter if you're using a 7800X3D like me. Firefox/Chromium was always better.
But take some of GNOME's core apps like Settings. The modern layout was already cemented way back in 3.26.
https://youtu.be/PpO4qQWFu8A?t=20
It's still functionally the same, just with the skin of modern GNOME.

Well just today I found out I'll need to find an extension just so Nautilus will respect the terminal I want when I right click and select open in terminal. If you think setting a default terminal other than ptyxis isn't really tinkering and shouldn't require googling only to find multiple previous solutions have been deprecated over time, or that this basic functionality that actually used to exist in GNOME's defaut apps menu, and was removed several versions ago, well hey look over there kablam
>>
>>108727824
If they figured out a way to make it feel snappier (basically like Niri) and added auto tiling as an option that's built in like COSMIC, I'd actually use it. The only other thing I get annoyed by is the lack of a systray since I don't want to be spammed with notifications non-stop, but I do want to be able to see if someone posted in a thread I'm in for work.
>>
>>108729701
Why was Sonny Piers removed from the board?
>>
>>108727824
I hated it for a long time but have come to prefer it. It has sane defaults, is simple, and stays out of my way. I have a dconf file I created years ago that implements the settings I do want to change (like shortcuts, hotkeys for changing workspaces, etc) and it still works flawlessly. After I install a system, I just dconf load / < dconf-settings, install Bing Wallpapers, and I'm pretty much good to go.
I think where a lot of people have a problem with it is coming from Windows. People coming from Windows are often (at least initially) looking for freedom to configure. GNOME is crap for that because it's meant to be opinionated software that's just fire up and go. But this is one of the things I like about Linux - there are so many better options for those people (KDE, XFCE, countless bare-bones DEs that you can configure with text files), while meanwhile I can have something like GNOME that works well for what I need.
>>
>>108729952
"can't you just set the default terminal in the settings or gnome-tweaks?" is my immediate thought
>this basic functionality that actually used to exist in GNOME's defaut apps menu, and was removed several versions ago
that's insane
>>
>>108729078
It's this. A lot of haters come from Windows, rightly see customization as one of Linux's biggest advantages, then go off the deep end down the customization rabbit hole (which isn't to criticize - I think we've all done this). GNOME isn't really meant to be used this way so they don't see the point of it because it actively makes customization a bit more difficult on purpose.
Some people never leave that state of mind, which is fine. Different people have different needs and different things they enjoy. Others of us decide that we don't really need all that and just want something that's largely clean and stays out of our way while offering sensible built-in quality of life features that go beyond a barebones DE.
>>
>>108727824
Gnome is made by lefties thus i don't care about it.

it's the thinking mans language
>>
>>108727824
I actually really like their design language. Out of all modern interface designs, Linux or otherwise, it's probably my favorite.
I also like how a lot of Gnome/GTK4 apps are simple and no-nonsense. I don't mind Kate and it's what I use right now, but sometimes you just want a basic ass text editor to write down a sentence. Does anyone even uses Kate to write actual code?

Having said all that, I've tried to use Gnome, I've tried so hard, but there's just too many features missing for me to comfortably use, even with extensions. Gnome kind of markets itself as a user friendly distro for everyone, but in reality they are so adamant and specific about their workflow and how they want you to use it it should be treated more like a niche VM like Hyprland. Not a general use DE.
>>
>>108733274
That's cheating. It's the only thing with any design language at all.

That being said, the HIG fucking sucks. "Thou shalt not have minimize buttons on thy windows" my fucking ass.

It’s bundled with some many Krap apps. I really hate their file indexer Baloo, and when I looked further it was initially created by a jeet. A more recent maintainer was throwing a wobbler on reddit, crying that people get more upvotes for calling it “balloon” (because it’s bloated) than he gets for improving it. These are not serious people.

Yes. A more recent maintainer than the original jeet. And despite the three years, Baloo still sucks along with most other KDE apps, like Gwenview.

baloo is absolute garbage lmao

Modern desktop linux is GNOME or nothing. All other options are subpar and have ‘experimental’ wayland support at best.

You will use GNOME and you will be happy. Be grateful that you’re even allowed to access the tweak tool.

I love GNOME. The only real problem is the features stripped out of Nautilus, e.g. folder thumbnails and per-folder view settings. That, and KDE Okular is way better than the GNOME PDF viewer at selecting OCR text.
