One of Linux's biggest problems has historically been fragmentation of platforms - it's very difficult to develop for different systems when those systems have very different moving parts underneath them. Increase commonalities and you increase ease of development, increase ease of development and you're able to offer more mainstream software because you've removed the costs connected to targeting smaller subsections of an already small market and consolidated them into a single market with larger user share.
