thoccy, creamy, marbly edition

Which is better for ergonomics?
>TKL or smaller where mouse is closer to a neutral position
>"ergonomic" keyboard with huge space in the middle, but mouse is farther out since it's as larger or larger than a regular 100%

Looking to finally get something that's not gamer shit. Would prefer a DIY kit since it sounds like it would be a fun project.

>Budget
$300 with some wiggle room for a really cool board
>Location (continent at least)
USA
>Preferred switch type
I have tactiles right now but I think I want to switch to linear. My plan is to just watch a million sound test videos and just pick which one sounds the best to me.
>Layout
ANSI
>Form Factor
75% though I could entertain a TKL board as well
>Backlight
I like RGB because I'm a gamer retard and I also have some shine-through side printed keycaps that I might want to use.

thinking of building a tenkeyless either evo80 or geon's frog what do you recommend? I like the look of the frog better i think
>>
>>108749182
neo75 (not cu) is the easy goto recommendation for 75%. I know it has a trimode option but I don't think it has rgb

>>108749489
evo80 is a prebuilt and geon boards are bought piecemeal. they don't come with the plate or pcb or anything and it all adds up pretty quick. frog tkl is a good option if you want HE with a venom pcb though. probably the least shit way to get an in stock HE right now in terms of quality
>>
>>108749519
>evo80 is a prebuilt and geon boards are bought piecemeal. they don't come with the plate or pcb or anything and it all adds up pretty quick
I should have been more specific my bad I was only interested in the differences of the two cases.
>HE switches
never tried them are they any good? I was planning on using linear switches for the build
>>
>>108749530
>I should have been more specific my bad I was only interested in the differences of the two cases.
then it's whatever you prefer. the geon board is going to end up being a lot more expensive though.

>never tried them are they any good?
they are kind of a meme because software can't really currently take advantage of the analog inputs so everything has to be done from the firmware side of the keyboard. they sound more deep and a little hollow compared to regular switches because of the diameter of the stem and the spring and everything is bigger to fit the magnet

if you only wanted linear then yeah, you'd be right at home with them

idk I gave up trying to find a sane 100% and went for the F122 repro. I guess you could get an F104 if you want something more standard, and it won't get any saner than a Model F in a Model M form factor.
>inb4 no Win key legends

You can modify the layout for a shorter spacebar and an extra key, as well as get either Unicomp Win keycaps or Unix style diamond keycaps.

Planning on getting the Evo75 but not sure which plate option I should go for, the PP or FR4. I'm planning on swapping the switches out since I'm chasing a specific sound. I want my keyboard to sound like river stones knocking together. I'm guessing the FR4 plate would get me closer to that sound since it's brighter and "clacky"?
>>

two hours later and with two burned fingers, the switch has been replaced. What a bitch of a keyboard to work with, the switches are not only soldered but also with a pressured clip, and you have to disassemble literally the whole thing. Of course, screws of multiple sizes everywhere, a feeble battery connector, and screws hidden under glued plastic sticks.

Yooo nig nogs I'm in the market for a retro-style TKL. Keychron had something called the C1 that was pretty close but iirc no backlighting.

Any recommends? Only requirements are:
>Backlighting (RGB preferred but solid will do)
>TKL
>Retro shell / keycaps
>At least one wireless mode (Either 2.4g or Bluethooh. Both is great)

And now that I double check turns out the C1 Pro 8k fits pretty well, so I'm leaning towards that but I still want some suggestions from the keebiggers here.

Yes, it is. The insides are filled with silicone pads cut to perfect size, so there's no hollowness at all. The PC plate it comes with is why I have two of these, they're frosted and easily the stiffest PC plate I've seen on any keyboard.
It's quite perfect for silent tactiles and clickies, I've got the big bump Lichicx raw silents tactiles on this one, and the Melodics in the other one that's in beige.

I bought a keychron v6 max. been using for a year or so and have been quite happy with it. but recently some keys have become unresponsive.

like ill press a key, but it just doesn't register until I press it again and then it just starts working again.

I've tried switching around the switches to keys that work sometimes but that doesn't see to be the problem. bluetooth or wired i get the same problem too.

any ideas?

>>108783322
any key or just a specific one?
>>
>>108779646
Not really within the GMK/Cherry profile spec, row 3 has very limited space under the keycap for the switch. As a result, the only way for a stepped capslock that functions/stands out within the profile is to move the switch over.

its on the keyboard designer's or manufacturer's to include support for it.
>>
>>108783322
Apparently keychrons develop that issue a lot.
Just searching for it reveals a lot of people who have the same issue, either double clicking or not registering. And the issue seems to be the pcb/switch slot. Not the switch itself.

This is the real fucking deal. All those typos I just corrected. Oh yes. Part of the journey. I would recommend an entry level custom board. Classic TKL is on clearance right now. If you wanted something aluminum then a neo board. You gotta build them yourself though, which means factoring keycaps, switches and stabilizers into the cost and I get that it's not for everyone, but it's just the best way to not get a piece of shit.

If you really, really don't want to do that, then an evo80 I guess.

Redragon has some great budget options that have very good cost-benefit.
The K556 also has a metal base that's very comfy.
imo their main problem is not really caring about ergonomics - but to get ergonomics you kind of start going for the curved keyboards with varying keycap sizes.
For generic crap, their crap is pretty good. I'm really enjoying the Dharma with the magnetic switches. I do hate that they're switching for web-based keyboard software, though.

Ah, well, I'd already ordered another KB, about two days ago, but the information is appreciated and taken in the spirit in which it was given.

I have a K10 HE (K10H-J1) arriving, tomorrow.

My 11/12-year-old G105 still works, but I'm going blind trying to see the characters, with this dim, blue, backlighting.

Also, its macro keys are unsupported by G Hub, which my mouse uses, and I am simply not going to run two different Logitech apps, when one should suffice. It's a KB with a few macro keys, not a lunar module; I don't think it's asking much, for the new software to support it. Been a Logitech man for years but... some of this shit just rubs me the wrong way.

Pic unrelated, but cheerful (in an 80s kind of way that I can appreciate).

Hello. I don't know anything about keyboards. I have been using a full sized 2007 microsoft office keyboard for 10+ years that I got for 20 dollars on Amazon.
I'm recently trying to get into digital art with a screenless drawing tablet and am having pretty annoying issues with ergonomics. I'm right handed so my drawing tablet is to the right of my keyboard but the keyboard is so long that for me to reach the left hand side of the keyboard and keep my pen at a comfortable angle I have to stretch my arms and it gets really uncomfortable. I've started laying the end of my keyboard on the bottom left quarter of my tablet just for comfort, but obv it is not ideal to have a significant portion of my tablet be unusable because a keyboard is resting on it :/
I saw pic related on a japanese artist's X.COM account and you can see his keyboard on the bottom left. This is exactly the layout that my body craves! I absolutely need separate Fxn keys on top (I use them constantly with my drawing program) and the I'm pretty sure the silver dial on the right of the board is a volume control which would also be awesome! My current microsoft keyboard has an entire third row above the Fxn keys that are just misc things like multi-media controls and a shortcuts to things like calculator and sleep etc. most of which other than the volume knob I never use lol.
Can anybody please help me identify what model of keyboard is in the picture? I'm hoping that it's not a custom job but something that I can actually purchase from a store, but I have no idea how to tell!

In general you're looking for a 75% layout. That's the one that has the F-keys but is compact on the right side.
Most of them won't have a volume knob, but hopefully this helps you narrow down your search and either find one with a knob or another one you like.

>never understood the appeal
gained popularity before usb c. allowed trannies to quick disconnect and hotswap between their dozen 45% creamy thocc anime girl keyboards. the short cable is by design, lardass trannies cant reach far across the desk or behind the computer to disconnect. aviator cables stuck around as a kind of elitist status symbol, kind of like how some snobs still flex driving a manual transmission even doe auto is literally just better now.
>>
What's the current meta for building hotswap keyboards?
Last time I looked into building one was in like 2019, I ordered some Amoeba single-key PCBs thinking I might build a dactyl, then lost interest. At the time hotswap sockets were kinda new IIRC, not many DIY projects supported them.
I kinda wanna try again, maybe with a charybdis or something similar, but I heard hotswap is apparently a lot easier and more reliable nowadays and has almost no downsides. I still have a few switch sets I impulse bought at the time so having the ability to type on a full keyboard for a while and then swap it out if I decide I want something different sounds pretty great.

Should I just get some sockets and solder them to my Amoebas? Or are there newer single-key PCBs that are natively hotswap, or purpose-built to support hotswap sockets and would be better than the old Amoebas? Any flex PCB hotswap tech for making dactyls/charybdii easier (for that matter can I just by a charybdis kit and add hotswap sockets into its PCB, or again should I be looking at getting/making a PCB designed for hotswap)?
>>
>>108792105

I actually use all my letter keys for my drawing program, so if it splits the letter board in half then it wouldn't work for me. I'll look into it tho! Thank you!

>75% layout
Thanks for the tip! I didn't know what they are called but this will help me narrow down the search substantially!
Also, the volume knob is nice but hardly a deal breaker if it doesn't have it xD
>>108792343
>stand
Cool! I didn't know that these existed! My tablet is screenless and I really do prefer just drawing with it flat on the table. I think it would be better ergo than what is shown in the pic, it kinda lets me keep my back straight and my arms at a 90d bend angle, the stand in pic looks like it would be awkward to use.

You guys are such cucks.
>>
>>108792058
Hey guys it's me again! I think I may have found even possibly THE exact keyboard from that artist's photo. It's got the knob and the keys on the furthest right column are right next to the letter row. It's on Ali Express for 40 buckers rn. The only thing is that it doesn't say anywhere on the page which switches it uses so I presume that it's a membrane keyboard and not mechanical?

Shipping times are a bit long, but I'm really tempted to buy it. Is there a catch or something I should be wary of? Are the keys just hot garbage? I mean I have genuinely no frame of reference given that I've been typing on cheap Microsoft office supply keyboards since I was old enough to type; surely there's no way that this keyboard would be worse feeling to me than the ones I'm already used to? Anyone have any thoughts on this AJAZZ AF82 board???
>>
>>108793672
Also apologies but apparently Aliexpress doesn't let you save images on their site lmao so I had to post a screengrab.

Also wtf is a "Three-shot Keycap"?
Also also, I'm on Linux, I hope these things don't require proprietary Windows drivers to work right? The rainbow RBG stuff is making me worried that it might need fancy drivers to make the board run which might not work on Linux :(

avoid any keyboard that doesn’t explicitly say it supports qmk, via or vial somewhere on the page. as long as it uses qmk, the firmware is open source and you can change any key or layer or whatever to do whatever. a lot of aliexpress chinkshit doesn’t support it

also, if the board is hotswap you can easily replace the switches with whatever you want. I would recommend avoiding anything that doesn’t check at least those two boxes

Is it bad to type around the speed I'm already at if it's natural to me?

>>
>>108794479
generally, just lots of practice
110 is very good and 140 is very very fast though, you're gonna be hitting significant diminishing returns at this speed

if you want to be autistic you can also switch layouts away from qwerty, you can learn something extremely autistic like https://blog.simn.me/posts/2025/afterburner/
>Afterburner is meant to be a meaningful improvement for people who are aiming for a speed of 150 WPM or above and are bottlenecked by physical finger speed.
However learning this would take a shitton of time so it's only if you really, really want to get as good at typing as possible

Also I think the world record typists in the world mostly use qwerty, so you don't have to learn that, I'm suggesting it because you said you really love typing so you might enjoy learning an optimal layout, also in theory once you learn how to use it properly getting faster on it should be easier than on qwerty

Could use some help from some acoustics autists:

I just got a Kinesis Freestyle 2. The right space bar felt a little hard to depress, so I took it off and cleaned around the area/hit it with some compressed air (the keyboard is in immaculate condition, but it was technically used, so I assumed maybe it was dirty).

Well, now the spacebar feels a bit better, but it has a god-awful tinny rattle that's driving me insane (even just from a light touch), it's much louder than the left space bar now. I'm pretty sure I reinstalled it correctly. I think the compressed air displaced some of the grease that was on the stabilizers, is that likely the cause? I don't really know much about lubing keys and all that, the key was quite hard to remove so I'm hoping I didn't fuck something else up.
>>

I have a Model M and I get around having no Super key by having Ctrl + Alt + Shift + whatever keybindings for those kind of shortcuts. It honestly feels more natural to slam all three of those keys than it does to press one specific key wedged between Ctrl and Alt at this point. And I don't want Microshit's logo on my keyboard since I don't use any of their slop anyway.

I use it all the time since it's handy to have a fourth modifier and I'm planning on getting the Unix style diamond legends for mine. Yes I use Windows but I don't care for the logo, to me it's a universal fourth modifier.

2 months later it's
>oh I moved down to a 60% with 58 keys because I like the challenge
6 months later it's
>oh I use a 40% now and I blocked half the keys
>I just like pressing ten keys at once instead of two keys to execute the same function
1 year later it's an orchiectomy

pros don't go for layers
layers just get in the way
the path of least resistance requires an optimal layout

absolutely not
they don't understand the duality of endgame Cherry builds
when it's loud and scratchy but in the right ways
these things are best understood and thus appreciated by 'men'

how are you typing both capital and lowercase letters with just 26 letter keys?
1800 requires heavy use of layers for day to day use

I see. It looks like its something do do with layering plastic so that the characters on the keys never fade. Not like I care at all about backlight since I find all that RGB stuff distracting :(

Thank you for the heads up! The board I'm looking at rn doesn't have VIA or hotswap, but it is 45 Cad with free shipping. Everything is so expensive now so I'm very price conscious :(
>>108794772
I did some research and it looks like a really price efficient board, but it's going to cost me probly like 200 bux where I'm at :(
I've made a note in case I ever get really into keyboards but I'm hoping that a cheaper board will meet my needs for now.

people are still buying this keyboard? I've been using it for like a decade

My current cheapo keycaps have it described as "Code" and I couldn't care less about it not being the Windows logo. Like sure, the Win95 logo would be fitting, but at the same time Joe only offers these as re-dyed Unicomp keys, meaning they'll have the same fucked quality from Unicomp's worn molds while the Unix diamond ones will have the fresh mold single piece thick-ass PBT quality. That, and as a massive Windowsfag I truly believe this key should be OS agnostic.
