Get access to a fat ps2 and buy a clone hdd adapter or try to get the official one. You can root it straight from the hdd now, no need to use a chipped ps2 to load freemcboot.

On the screen when before you play the demo where it shows the controls you swap the demo disc with your modded burned disc and the homebrew will boot after you press X. From there you can install FreeMCBoot or load into OpenPS2Loader.

For more reasonable games think SSX Tricky, DBZ Budokai, Soul Calibur the USB is fine. But like other anon said it's better to use network if you got Ethernet and setup.
