It's a security feature. Think about what would happen if I sent you a folder with a binary file inside called "ls" that deletes all of your files when run.

this is why freetards will never ever ever depose microsoft even if windows 27 requires you demonstrate to copilot via your webcam that you're wearing a chastity cage in compliance with UN Citizen's Environmental, Social, and Governance Directive #173494056 to prevent you contributing to planetary overpopulation by reproducing and a buttplug in compliance with #196890385 to prevent you damaging the environment by farting and emitting methane into the atmosphere before it lets you log on, NOTHING justifies violating the intuivity of the interface, use any other solution or else allow the risk and let your users learn by painful experience to avoid it for themselves

works on fedora

I think you're just too dumb to properly think about the scenario I said
Microsoft also has the exact same restriction in powershell and cmd btw
>>
>>108744967
because windows is designed so that its intended users will never so much as find out the command line exists, meanwhile on linux in spite of the false promises of the evangelists it's still necessary to drop into the terminal every single day
>>
>>108744996
You made a thread about one thing, and then just completely shifted the goalposts to something else
I am not telling you to use linux, I am giving you the answer to the question you made your thread about
Everything after that point is you just seething and projecting on me for some reason
If linux really enrages you this much then just... don't use it?
>>
>>108744850
Not him, but yes, absolutely. I love the visual reassurance of what I'm running.
>>
>>108745009
I never asked any question, the purpose of this thread is to demonstrate the point I just made, furthermore to that end, notice:
>take your meds schizo, there’s no such thing as ffmpeg
regardless of the reason for its requiring you to tell it that the file you want is in the directory you just CDed into, WHY in the name of GOD does it emphatically deny that the file exists if you don't, when it could say File Not Found: No File Path Supplied? this CONCLUSIVELY proves that the whole OS is INTENTIONALLY designed to repel any user who has not spent several hours observing a smelly nerd already versed in it use it before attempting to do so themselves, which is only possible if they are themselves a smelly nerd and frequent the spaces such "people" congregate
>If linux really enrages you this much then just... don't use it?
I don't have any choice, since I hate windows too much to stand any newer than 7, and since too many developers of things I need are collaborators in the persecution of 7 users I have been compelled to dual boot, but now I find that linux is in its own way just as user hostile as any windows provided the user doesn't belong to the same faggy cliques of bullied autists its creators do
>>
>>108745194
Because the file doesn't exist in your $PATH. It's not searching your pwd; it's searching your $PATH.

Please take some time to reflect on your posts
If a terminal command is taking up this much of your brain space and making you this mad I can only suggest in the most empathetic and respectful way possible you should probably spend some more time outside and realise there is far more to our world than computer operating systems
>>
>>108744996
command line came first and are the natural environment for interfacing with the computer retard. the entire downfall of society can be traced back to computers hiding the terminal and kids being raised not knowing how to input text commands

Why has nobody made a fucking actual installer? It's crazy
>>
>>108745194
>regardless of the reason for its requiring you to tell it that the file you want is in the directory you just CDed into, WHY in the name of GOD does it emphatically deny that the file exists
Because "ffmpeg" searches the path and "./ffmpeg" looks in the current directory. Are you retarded? (rhetorical question)

PATH=$(IFS=:; echo "${dirs[*]}:$PATH")

Because anyone using still using windows at this point is either doesn't have any fucking clue what they're doing or knows exactly what they are doing with nothing in-between those two parts of the userbase so no reason to waste effort on an installer no one would use.

Because It Just Works(TM) for the target audience (Linux kings).

Ken and/or Dennis, I have a lot of respect for you and don't want to say anything bad about you.
But God damn I will never forgive you for everything associated with the dot entries in Unix.
I know its not your fault people adopted those ideas and I know your next OS did not include them, but we are still dealing with the consequences of this.

Windows retards are only capable of using mouse for their install shield wizard
>>
>>108745267
but you do not deny that it would have been very easy to anticipate that very many non-virgin users would encounter difficulties due to not knowing they have to put a retarded little dotslash before everything and to provide for it that they would be met with a brief, suitably official computer-speak sounding message from which they could deduce that they need to put a fucking retarded little dotslash before everything instead of a false statement that the file they want doesn't exist, and that the programmer conspicuously failed to do so

I wonder if you'd have the same attitude directed at the authors of the people who implemented the means for you to make such a post.
Maybe they should have cared less and had more fun instead.
Why be passionate or fanatical about computers in the digital age during an era where the tech industry has a proficiency crisis.
Maybe some things are more important than going outside.
>>
>>108745438
Getting hung up on some miniscule detail of a terminal (which as explained to you, exists for security reasons) is not passion, it's complete lack of perspective bordering on mental illness.
All the technology you use was in majority built by well-rounded individuals who programmed all of this for a paycheck and then went home to their wife and kids and lived a life outside of computers.
Windows was built entirely by salaried workers, Linux was built by a man with a vision who also has a family life.
You are responding to me on a phone or computer designed by people who just did it for a job, then went outside to do other things.

You are getting hung up on something that really doesn't matter at all. Get some perspective.

I don't think the Unix greybeards were thinking about security when they invented that. It probably predates the first malicious software.

You're doing that currently, but not for a job.

>All the technology you use was in majority built by well-rounded individuals who programmed all of this for a paycheck and then went home to their wife and kids
Dennis never married and Ken only invented Unix because he was away from his family.
>Linux was built by a man with a vision who also has a family life.
Linus reimplemented an existing OS, he did not design or invent it.
To put this into perspective for you, Bell labs is renown for their innovations, a team of world class talent.
College kids implement Unix even to this day as an exercise, first year students.

Some things are big enough to demand sacrifice.

I think a lot of the stuff from bell labs was just cover for the public release of prior military research.

Why did you download ffmpeg as a file instead of just installing it via your package managers, where "ffmpeg" as a command would indeed work?
>>
>>108744476
In the context of a terminal (like Linux or macOS), ./ (dot-slash) is how you tell the computer to run a program that is in your current folder.

Here is the breakdown of what each part means:

The Dot (.): This represents your "current directory" (the folder you are currently "standing" in).The Slash (/): This is a separator that indicates you are looking for a file inside that folder.

Why do you need it?

In most operating systems, for security reasons, the terminal won't automatically look in your current folder for programs to run. It only looks in specific "trusted" system folders (called your PATH).

If you download a program like ffmpeg and it's sitting right there on your desktop, you can't just type ffmpeg to run it—the computer will say "Command not found." You have to type ./ffmpeg to say, "Look right here in this specific folder and run this file."

In the meme

When the user types ./ffmpeg, they are manually forcing the computer to find and start the program to prove it’s actually there on their hard drive.
