I'm tired of pretending Linux is an actual alternative to Windows
>>
>>108748158
You’re not alone, it’s a pill every autistic has to swallow. Linux systems shine in certain domains, but the desktop is a clusterfuck.
>>

too bad it isn't for you

i'm tired of pretending i have a choice. Would love to go back to windows xp or 7.

I'm a PC fag since birth (except my mom's MSDOS when I was a sprout). Always thought of the switch. What doesn't it do that you'd like it to?

>>
>>108748158
Indeed, but modern Windows is so abominable, what other options do we have?
MacOS? LOL no thanks.
ReactOS is far from ready, and will probably never be.
Windows 10 is shit too, it only seems "good" in comparison with 11, and you can't disable *all* the spyware.
Windows 7 is definitely becoming unusable now, no more modern software and hardware work with it, even with VxKex.
So we have to do with Linux, it's the least worst option.
>>
>>108748193
Photoshop doesn't work there
>>
>>108748158
true linux doesn't have nearly enough slop and bloat to compete with windows so it can never be an alternative

I wish older Windows could live on as "Windows distributions" still updated and still compatible with all modern software and hardware.

Will try. Thank you sir.
>>
>>108748158
It's not and it never will be what it is best at is being what it is and it has it's uses. If you are into tech you will at a minimum have a windows XP Box and SUSE box a Win7 box a win10 box and inevitably a Win11 machine in addition to a few classic computers like amgias, atart sts, commodores, spectrums etc as well as some small single board machines and if you are hardmode you will have a HPUX an AS400 or a Sun system or whatever.

What I like to do on SUSE is code in C. It's good for keeping up on what is happening in the linux world and for what it is it is great but it's at it's best when you use it for what it is a cheap and cheerful unix with driver support. I do a good bit of C for little projects like embedded boards, it's a nice for making things like mister boxes or building a synology clone NAS or whatever. Far better for doing your C in but it's not going to run Windows XP era games and applications as well as windows XP etc etc

The desktop is dying and linux will never be more than a niche on it before it's gone forever (quite soon I think) but it's a comfy niche if you use it for what it is and what it can be good for.
>>
>>108748242
>normie comms apps I need for meatfriends like Discord and Zoom
Hey anon, no one you talk to on these things are your friends. You talk to friens in person. If you are talking to people on that shit it's either because they or you are chronically lonley, scammers or live in remote locations but none of that makes them your friends. Friends are people you do real in person things with
>>
>>108748695
You're using a stronger (better, I'llbeit) definition of "friends." I agree with you. Nonethever there are folks upon God's green that I'd rather stay in touch with. That's all I mean.

I don't have to pretend, I've used linux as a daily driver for 5 years. I just used Excel in my win11 VM to see if I'm missing anything and spent longer futzing with the UI than if I'd just vibeslopped some javascript or python to generate the charts I needed.

My cmd console is in green txt and black background though and I use it instead of bash(and everything works)

Use case for Windows?
>>
>>108749181
I've been on and off and thought I wasn't missing anything on Windows since I was constantly using WSL anyway, but moved to Ubuntu to deal with various memory issues in WSL and things actually work like they should. That was a few months ago, and I won't go back to Windows unless Ubuntu somehow corrupts everything I get, but I think I'm good enough at it that I'll be able to recover from most thing, so I fully intend to stick with it until I get burned again.

I'm not a professional musician or anything but I've recorded and fucked with music since I was a kid. Linux simply does not have music software that is good.
This doesn't mean windows is good. I see myself getting a mac mini or something whenever the old Windows 10 gaming rig shits the bed or gets too obsolete to use.

i recently installed ubuntu 26.04 to give it a spin and see where desktop linux is in 2026.
i was pleasantly surprised! the only real issue i faced was the trackpad scroll sensitivity being way too high, so i had to go hunting for a hack solution since gnome doesn’t expose the api for that config. fixed the sensitivity but there’s still something off and unpolished about trackpad scrolling.
i actually think this latest ubuntu LOOKS better than windows, it’s just less ergonomic and customizable here and there. that top bar dock for example - should not exist in 2026. put that stuff in the bottom bar, on the right, respect my screen space.
overall though, this is very good. much better than macos.

I list a game, and what you’re going to admit you’re wrong? No, you’ll just say the game doesn’t matter and run away like you won something.

Instead, research this for yourself and look for issues with Steam games on linux, you’ll find as many examples as you need to convince yourself that it isn’t perfect. Of course, you won’t do that either, because you’d prefer to lie to yourself.

My AMD machine is stable now but in the beginning it was a fucking nightmare of crashes and general instability, what really helped was downclocking my RAM and downgrading my motherboard BIOS (newer versions are broken for my CPU).

I don't think that Linux was ever supposed to be considered as an alternative to Windows, Windows is like a shitty playground a few retarded fucks threw in billions of dollars for and ever single fucking retard on the world just used it without a question. I don't think people who use their computer without the daily usage of a shell, a package manager, or freedom in choice over everything, like BSD, Hurd and Linux does for users, I don't think they really deserve to own a computer. Long live actually using your computer and Freedom baby.

as a long time windows guy currently playing around with ubuntu 26.04, i unironically am considering officially switching. having docker just werk is really nice, and there’s something about 26 that just feels much more polished than previous ubuntu.
however
i play gaymes like 2-3 times a year so while it isn’t my priority, i don’t like the idea of switching to an os where i *literally* CAN’T do it.
i also can’t escape the fact that the linux ecosystem is so fractured and important parts of it rely on severely mentally ill individuals, that whatever magic came together to produce the recent ubuntu LTS, could completely fall apart in like 1 week

Photoshop's main competitor Affinity works in Linux (only the login and subscription-based AI tools are missing), which covers the needs of most users. There is also a good free web clone of Photoshop called Photopea.

Otherwise you can use the web version of Photoshop, or run Photoshop in a VM layer like Winboat (though no GPU acceleration unless you have a second dedicated GPU).

People bring up GIMP, but its development is really slow. Only recently did it get non-destructive image editing, and it is still not seamless or feature-complete.

Until Linux's marketshare grows further (or the EU forces European professional work programs to make Linux ports as part of the EU digital sovereignty agenda), someone who needs a professional programs not native to Linux for work should dual boot or have separate PCs. But the general computing experience in Linux is far superior and it will only get better.

I guess you're conflating "alternative" with "1:1 substitute", linux IS an alternative, it's a matter of what you deem reasonable to exchange for something else.
To me (in 2006) the overall design, stack and system interaction was worth the change from windows, even at the cost of losing the MS level of universal support.
