Does it have any competitors yet? Will it get a revision?
Yes, it does have competitors, Smart TVs.
>>108755196I'm sorry, good competitors*
>>108755104It is inferior to the Ugoos AM6B+
>>108755201sorry, nvidia lost
>>108755104they'll probably do a refresh with the switch 2 soc if memory/nand flash prices ever come down
>>108755104>>108755201>>108755209why do you specifically need a tegra soc?snapdragon elites mog this shit.
>>108755104If you don't have an audio system capable of playing back both object-based audio formats, you could probably just drop it for something newer. The seamless Atmos/DTS:X support is still the only thing it can do that no other device can.
>>108755104the gabecube unironically
>>108755104tegra is actually diarrhea
>>108755472Which products do you recommend that has those in them?
Fire TV Cube 3 is available for half the money and supports AV1.
>>108755104There's apple tv with a more powerful processor and better modern codec support. It runs ios though.>>108755209They won't because the S2 soc doesn't do media well, it has the bare minimum required to support S2's features and that's it.
Ugoos AM6b+ or Minix U22X-J if you're serious. Full dovi, bluray menus, etc in CoreELEC. It's the serious high end choice. Lol at meme shit like AV1 that nobody actually uses. What are you going to use that for, watching YouTube videos?
>>108756468which soc and can it boot debian
Just wondered, why don't we have any open source Fire Stick clones?
>>108757588to be more specific: open source hardware but I probably realize theres some hdmi lioicense shittery? i know we can plug bulky rasp pis but i just want a stick.
>>108757588>>108757598The SoC alone has so many patent licenses that need to be paid. Not going to happen. Not to mention the whole point of the Fire Stick is streaming. You're not going to get a Widevine L1, a Playready SL3000, or Apple's shit to get proper DRM on an open device. So even if you buy an open source friendly device like Amlogic stuff with community support you aren't going to reach that level. But if you're happy with just using CoreELEC a stick with an Amlogic SoC will do the trick.
looks so tacky
>>108757598I looked into what I'm talking about and something with the S905Y4 chipset might be what you're after. You can find several on aliexpress. CoreELEC supports it and surely Armbian does too. You might need some kind of adapter to get CoreELEC booting off a USB but it would be an interesting challenge compared to the cheaper and more common boxes used for this.
>>108757658It kinda has that OG Xbox aesthetic. I got one for free but the power supply is busted. I wish I could get another one of those.
>>108757559This. I didn't know how the shield contributed to extra motion judder and sluggishness of kodi ui until I got one. DV FEL is great and very noticeable to my eyes. general hdr performance is better. It does look like native bluray. Coreelec skin bitrate info is nice. SDR to DV is also nice.
>>108755104where are the chinkboxes at currently? >Firestick is pozzed>Google Streamer lacks codecs and will always show ads>Shield is ancient nowAlso Android TV Jellyfin client sucks ass, I would like to switch soon. Is Apple TV the only choice left, as much as I hate their closed app store?
>>108757716Tread carefully. Many of them contain literal malware. Knowing your way around adb can help but the last batch I did for work that had malware on them took some heavy duty decontamination. I doubt Jellyfin is somehow going to be better on Apple TV given the codec situation. Is it going to be able to stream shit without breaking it up into HLS? Maybe test Jellyfin in Kodi on the Android TV device you have now. If you think it's better you can look into going the CoreELEC route to avoid the AIDS.
>>108755104All devices have ads now. All of them including the shield. The shield is good, I own 3 shields, a 2017 and 2 2019 shields. I also use these walmart "pucks". I use ADB to disable google's launcher and use F-Launcher instead. The device runs great, is powerful and will play most retro games and can play 4k.

>>108755104Yeshttps://osmc.tv/vero/Stop using amazon/apple spyware
>>108757733The problem with the Google Streamer + Jellyfin client which I currently have is, Streamer probably misreports what it supports, leading to HDR content streaming with washed out colors. I can 'fix' that by forcing transcoding, but that introduces it's own problems:- slower to start streaming- seeking problems and subs de-syncing - transcode == lose some qualityAlso, I find it odd they force you to seek in 30s increments, so say you're at 01m25s -> seek forward -> you're at 01m30s. It's like they couldn't do it properly or they are trying to hide some sync issue. The two clients I used on my iphone and ipad (swiftfin & streamyfin) didn't have these weird limitations, but I don't daily drive them so I won't say you're wrong about Applel

>>108760559RPi has next to no hardware support for decoding video. Really bad SoC for media. Kind of funny if you think of its origins.
>>108758434Any evidence for your accusation?
>>108759617In this case the Apple product is appropriately priced. The Shield is still better in every way and costs more because of it

>>108755104that's crazy how arm is still fucking dogshit after many years.
>>108762510For this sort of application it really isn't. My ISP provides me with free IPTV service in my package. They gave me a basic Android TV box with some sort of S905* SoC. Perfect for my needs. Before that I was using a Xiaomi Mi TV box but I sold that to my boss once I got this thing for free. He's happy with that too. What more could you want than a device with low power consumption that does not lag in menus and is capable of hardware accelerated H264 decoding at 1080p? I don't have a 4K TV so keep that in mind.
>>108762908i want any arm cpu able to do this shit, i won't buy a specific garbage to do specific trash, i'm not installing the apps, fuck them, fuck the jews
>>108762948That's how you end up spending your whole life behind a computer screen bombarded with endless distractions convincing yourself you are making a good use of your time. I like to compartmentalize. A console for playing games. A TV for watching movies and TV shows. A phone for communication. As it was before everything got all fucked up by the internet. I don't stick to this strictly 100% I just do what makes sense for me. Even if modern life is shit I refuse to let it dictate it's terms to me.
>>108762429Shield works without any accounts.
>>108757494>There's apple tv with a more powerful processor and better modern codec support.>It runs ios though.TVOS. And it still doesn't support DTS passthrough which is very odd for something otherwise very capable.

>>108761100>Kind of funny if you think of its originsIt actually makes sense. It's a STB chip not a media box chip. It only has to decode whatever most TV providers use. And it only has to hardware decode codecs too heavy for its cpu.I'm surprised they actually bothered with decent CPU cores, it's more powerful than the shield now.>>108764105Apple is all in on dolby, they don't seem to bother with anything else. But what they support they support correctly so at least there's that.

>>108765470obviously stronger hardware would be better. if someone thinks an rpi is some transcoding powerhouse they are retarded.
Apple TV 4k is powerful enough to do local playback of everything you throw at it. Shame it doesn't have a non-Apple equivalent. And HTPCs aren't that because of Dolby Vision/HDR10+ bullshit going on.
>>108757755>The device runs great, is powerful and will play most retro games and can play 4k.Yep, I just bought one to replace my Kodi SBC since I can run Netflix / other services along with my local network, plus it's fairly powerful and can run retro games. And cheap af at $20... the SBC is worth 5X that now lol. I really need to look harder at de-botting it but it just works and I've left it alone.
>>108764373You don't get surround sound from most streaming sites when running it off a Windows PC.With all Tv boxes (Android TV. Roku, Fire stick, etc.) you get surround sound (usually Dolby Digital).
>>108765764>Dolby Vision/HDR10+ bullshitUnsolved problem on computers. Which is a fucking shame because they force me to use an Android box now.
>>108765900Windows 11 has dolby vision and hdr10+. it just works on nvidia/amd/intel.
>>108765900Works great with MPV
>>108762429You are required to use an Apple account and Apple payment processors for all purchases. A very hard toss from being able to use it without being in "the apple ecosystem". If you're not using an iPhone you can't control your device with your phone like how all phones regardless of phone OS are able to be used by all other manufacturers. Being able to pause, or type in on screen input boxes using my phone is preferred for me, like when I'm going out to smoke. Also, no hands free voice commands means I can't put the TV on kids content with my voice when the crib lizards are acting up before I finish my box of wine and popping xanies
