So. A rich old lady gave me her late husbands server. He was head of IT at a big company and the server was his hobby. There were ethernet cables running into the ceiling before I took it. I want to look through his data, and also find out what he even used it for. First roadblock... I don't know his password. I also don't know anything about servers. I'm better with tech than most people, but have 0 server experience. Any ideas on how to get in?

The battery is used to keep the card powered while it copies cached data to flash after a power failure. Don't bother replacing it yet, it should work fine without it.

Boot another linux from USB, mount local storage, remove and replace hash for root in /etc/shadow. ESXi nothing more than RHEL-based Linux.OR2. Download original ISO ESXi 5.0.0 (from rutracker.org) or little newer and make Upgrade but choose option to preserve configuration. Forget about getting through UEFI. Just unplug the drives and plug them into a machine you have. You can even use a SATA-USB adaptor in a fair few instances.If the disks are not themselves encrypted, you've got into what's on them. If the disks are encrypted, you will never get into what's on them.
