So. A rich old lady gave me her late husbands server. He was head of IT at a big company and the server was his hobby. There were ethernet cables running into the ceiling before I took it. I want to look through his data, and also find out what he even used it for. First roadblock... I don't know his password. I also don't know anything about servers. I'm better with tech than most people, but have 0 server experience. Any ideas on how to get in?

It's missing a battery or something as well. Not really sure what it's going on about. Also, not sure why the last image rotated.

If the UEFI isn't locked, you can boot into a flash drive running a Linux distro, mount the root partition from there and edit the shadow file to chage the password. If the UEFI is locked, you should be able to reset it with a jumper on the motherboard.

The server probably has a hardware RAID card in it. The battery is used to keep the card powered while it copies cached data to flash after a power failure. Don't bother replacing it yet, it should work fine without it.

the default password is calvin, unless he changed it.
>>
>>108773964
oh it should have idrac, there's a dedicated lan port on the back you can hook up to your network.

Unfortunately it was not.

It might. Here's the back. Cords are a bit in the way. It also has a second spot for a power cord. Not sure what that's about. Maybe it's where the battery hooks up.

Gonna try that now. I have a live usb for Mint on hand.
>>
>>108774081
I forgot to mention that since this thing is running ESXi and not a standard *nix, the shadow file is stored in a tarball that you have to unpack and repack to reset the password; There are guides online that explain how to do it. Did the widow ask you to recover data from it?
>>
>>108774075
they're redundant power supplies. it will run with 1 but log it as a fault.
>>
>>108774106
The window like in >>108773891? Let me restart and check.
>>
>>108774060
These JBODs are cool. That's probably where all of the data is stored.
>>
>>108774121
No, the widow is the old lady.
>>
>>108773876
Give it back jamal
>>
>>108774138
i don't think jamal is going around stealing entire server racks. that's a white mans thievery.
>>
Why not just wipe it?
Stop being nosy.
>>
>>108774123
They are. Each section has a 1 TB HDD in it.
>>108774185
I will not stop being nosy. The fantasy is that he had a lot of bitcoin on it, and didn't tell his wife before he died. Unlikely, I know. Besides, I can appreciate what he did. It's like honoring his memory in a way.

I work in forensic data recovery and I've seen a lot of weird shit over the years even on old people's devices. Brace yourself and expect the worsts.
>>
>>108774281
what's the weirdest other than pizza?
>>
>>108774300
Sometimes we get stuff that we're unable to explain, probably just schizo stuff, harmless on its own. The problem is exactly the pizza, specifically all the different flavors. There's a reason of why we're sent to mandatory psychological meetings every few months.
>>
>>108773876
Give the server back Jamal...
>>
>>108773876
Bruh. She wants your relatively young D.

>>
>>108774224
Even more fun: it's full of naked pictures of the old lady and her husband before he died.
>>
>>108774224
Uh, I don't think the head of IT of a big company would be retarded enough to leave a server full of self-incriminating shit unencrypted. Then again, pedophiles are often illogically retarded when it comes to their proclivities.

Maybe he meant to encrypt everything eventually, but kept putting it off, instead relying on security through obscurity (his wife obviously didn't know what to do with it).

I thought forensics and content moderation were largely managed by equally fucked up, "reformed" individuals.

if you stupjd zoomer

1. Boot another linux from USB, mount local storage, remove and replace hash for root in /etc/shadow. ESXi nothing more than RHEL-based Linux.

OR

2. Download original ISO ESXi 5.0.0 (from rutracker.org) or little newer and make Upgrade but choose option to preserve configuration. Or you will wipe entire local datastore (all configs, licenses (if it exists)).

Still doubt that this Head of IT hold any data on local drives.

lol, the amount of background checks you need to pass in order to get the job is insane.

no those ones aren't allowed to have the job even though they'd be perfect. they have psychologists and tests designed specifically to weed them out including going through all of the data they've collected on your internet usage over your lifetime. also 99% of content moderation jobs are contracted out overseas to poor kenyans and filipinas
>>
>>108773876
Well, did you get in?
>>
Forget about getting through UEFI. Just unplug the drives and plug them into a machine you have. You can even use a SATA-USB adaptor in a fair few instances.
If the disks are not themselves encrypted, you've got into what's on them. If the disks are encrypted, you will never get into what's on them.
>>
>>108774075
why the fuck are you hoarding all of that e-waste?
>>
>>108773876
>I want to look through his data, and also find out what he even used it for.
You should wipe the drive out of respect you filthy nigger jeet. This is also why you must always fully encrypt your drives, you could die at any second and your data would be pawed through by some filthy 3rd world parasite.
