Anyone own one of these? Hows compatibility with software/games these days?Considering getting one of these to replace my old ass stinkpad.
>>108775251ANYTHING non-apple ARM is dogshit by default. Apple has their niche filled incredibly well by dedicating 50% of their silicon to emulating x86. Their tranny CPUs worked...
Literally what the guy said above. ARM is assfaggot technology meant for playing fruit ninja on the go.
poor linux support and cost more than x86 machines.
I guess ill stick to intel/amd but >>108775460 in bongland these arm laptops are quite a bit cheaper than x86 options, at least the ones with good build quality and screens.
>>108775486snapdragon x elite cost more than x86
>>108775251Compatibility with obscure RPG maker porn shit is pretty bad, even if you adjust the emulation settings from fast to accurate. There's no need to buy these since AMD and Intel have pretty much bridged the efficiency gap and you don't have to give up native x86.
I daily a surface 7 w/ snapdragon. The screen/keyboard/trackpad are all fantastic but I only use it to remote to my x86 machine so compatibility isn't an issue. There are ARM versions of lots of windows apps nowdays if you need them.
>>108775251They're about halfway there. For most of what I do it works but random things you want to do won't. Like accessories or displays. Or basically anything that uses the graphics.
>>108775251>Anyone own one of these?i don't own snapdragon x elite laptops, it's cost more than bunch of x86 laptops>>108775251>Hows compatibility with software/games these days?not as good
>>108775251these fucks are charging more than apple prices for a windows only device that almost works as intended at best>but linux>qualcommyeah good luck with that
>>108775251paperweightyou can only use windows
>>108775251Literally the downsides of Macs (impossible to upgrade the hardware, limited selection of hardware, zero support of other OS, more expensive than x86 counterparts) with none of the advantages of a Windows machine (extremely limited amount of native software so you have to rely on a translation layer and lose 50% of the performance, assuming the translated program works). They aren't even good Linux machines because Qualcomm refuses to help with the drivers and quirks specific to ARM.
>>108775251got the thinkpad t14s with snapdragon. its ok as a windows laptop, it has the best support for linux of all the x1 elite snapdragons, and even it still doesnt have speaker protection on linux. theres an ubuntu image with the device tree blobs in the ubuntu discourse forum that works pretty well, and most things work. i think the webcam still doesnt work and you need to boot with a flag to get speakers to work, but everything else works.
>>108775251They're fine if you're ONLY going to use Windows on them and don't mind a lot of programs not working. Low req video games including a lot of old Windows ones and emulators work fine for the most part.I strongly recommend getting one with a Lunar Lake or Panther Lake CPU instead. That way you'll get the benefit of good battery life with x86 compatibility.
What is the point of these other than better battery life (I assume it should be better compared x86 laptops) ?
>>108775251qualcomm is awful at supporting these chips. don't waste your money.
>>108778416They actually do not have better battery life. They have the fastest CPU (100W, 5GHz 18 core with ~M4 SPECint scores) you can buy in a Windows laptop right now, however.
>>108775251I'd say you should stay clear unless you're going to do nothing but run a web browser on the computer.
I own the Surface ARM. Most normie apps are Already Arm compiled, but the Tor browser is a notable intel only app.
>>108775251ARM is anti-freedom technology and should not be financially supported unless you want a world where 90% of laptops are locked to a specific OS.
>>108775506IIRC, all modern rpg maker porn are electron apps wrapped in an exe, you can run them through a browser though I use this for conveniance.https://github.com/bakustarver/rpgmakermlinux-cicpoffs
>>108775251From my professional experience, they're a PITA anytime I encounter one because no software meant for serious work is supported on ARM. Can someone PLEASE explain to me why everyone is so concerned with power efficiency when nobody is ever more than two hours away from a power outlet?
>>108780756they don't last longer eithersent from my snapdragon x2 elite laptop with like 7 hours of battery life
>>108780682True, but there's old shit or custom engines as well. Still, this is pretty good, thanks for sharing.
>>108775251I am a retard, I want to own a chromebook with a Mediatek Kompanio Ultra 910; has Mediatek delivered on it promises to play nice with Linux or is it vaporware like Qualcomm? To explain, they have comparable prices but better performance to a Macbook Neo, up to twice the ram and have a real battery to last 14-17 hours of light use. The big problem is that the desirable model, Lenojew has hiked the MSRP to 1000 bucks and all the secondary sellers have it higher than that, which is way too much for an extremely overpowered web browser. The Acer version has 12 gigs of ram and an IPS screen but is still 600 bucks.>>108781227Offhand, the only modern engine that they use that is a nightmare are RPG Developer Bakin games which need you to open protontricks install dotnet 45, 48 set the windows version to 10, find the a version of GEProton that works and it still performs like ass and is dysfunctional half the time.
>>108783090>has Mediatek delivered on it promises to play nice with Linux or is it vaporware like Qualcomm?Get the Mac or an x86 laptop. Mediatek's Linux support is nonexistent so you will be stuck with the toy OS that comes with the device.
>>108775251Wait so everyone here is telling us that Qualcomm can simply fix this gay earth by making a mobile phone with a full windows os?They are unwilling to respond to apples gay ass neo with a Qualcomm phone that can do anything an laptop can?Wtf is going on here?I mean I get that I can use Termux on an android phone, however tensor chips etc aren't strong enough to run an full os. So why would t Qualcomm respond to this?
>>108783881Well the Snapdragon X were supposed to be macbook slayers so yeah they are aiming well north of 600 dollars. It isn't hard to imagine that binned snapdragon phone silicon will make its way into laptops soon.Technically it already existed before the Macbook Neo: MediaTek's Companio Ultra 910 share the same specs as their Dimensity 9400+. But it only is in two Chromebooks and their only copium is if Google will release their AluminumOS which might redeem it from being an overpowered netbook. https://www.mediatek.com/products/chromebooks/mediatek-kompanio-ultrahttps://www.mediatek.com/products/smartphones/mediatek-dimensity-9400-plus
>>108783409>Mediatek's Linux support is nonexistenthttps://www.collabora.com/news-and-blog/news-and-events/from-panthor-to-rk3588-advancing-graphics-video-soc-support-linux-kernel-7.html>AngeloGioacchino Del Regno expanded support for several MediaTek SoCs like the MT8196 Chromebook including power management enablements (SPMI, DVFSRC, and regulator), display and audio enablements (HDMI, DSI and audio controller), DMA fixes, and Device Tree cleanups.>Nicolas Frattaroli contributed preliminary patches to enable support for the MT8196 SoC. He fixed clock issues and read enabled cores from eFuse to activate the GPU (this is good progress but the GPU will stay off in mainline for stability reasons for now). He also started refactoring and fixing the interconnect driver.Well it isn't non existent but by the time their 3rd party contractors finish, we will be talking about Nova Lake and Nvidia N1s. But yeah this answers my original question: after a year of being on the market, linux might be usable in 6 months.
>>108775251Apple do well due to their closed ecosystem and all hardware being the same. Windows doesn't have that luxury
>>108775251I'm sick of big PC's with fat GPUs. I'm waiting for good Linux support and then I'll finally switch to an ARM Laptop. Nigga snapdragon phones can run AAA Games with "GameNative" or "GameHUB", it's INSANE.Let's wait and see... RedHat, Canonical, System76, Tuxedo... PLEASE! And the biggest one yet... at least for gayming. VALVE. I won't touch those snappy dragons, until valve will release the Steam Frame.
>>108783090>Offhand, the only modern engine that they use that is a nightmare are RPG Developer Bakin games which need you to open protontricks install dotnet 45, 48 set the windows version to 10, find the a version of GEProton that works and it still performs like ass and is dysfunctional half the time.I also fucking hate any games that use MIDI. Sometimes you install directmusic and gmdls and it just werks. And sometimes, no matter what you do, it still won't work. I fucking hate this shit so much.
