I know it's irrelevant now to most people (that have moved to a 4K monitor and a GPU capable of reasonably supporting it), but I am, frankly, a broke nigger who is perfectly happy with my 1080p IPS Dell shitter that I've had for a decade.

I will attempt to provide some wisdom on the subject in the most efficient way I've found for explaining it, borrowing an analogy rooted in Jewish dietary laws:
>The pig (1440p) is a hypocrite of an animal, perhaps even worse than creatures that are obviously non-kosher. It has hooves (can display 1080p content, and provides a significant resolution boost), but does NOT chew its cud (almost nothing is natively in 1440p, upscaled 1080p will look like ass, and arguably most video games cater to rich 4k benchmarkers and general 1080p poorfags).
Another thing worth mentioning is what happens when you upgrade: a 1080p monitor relocated to a secondary/auxiliary role is an excellent choice with your new 4K display. Reference documents & emails will look reasonably crisp on it. 1440p isn't guaranteed to work for that.

1440p is the best resolution to be widely available on desktop monitors in my opinion, it's sharp enough and it's not an overkill like 4K, but unfortunately the industry decided 4K is going to be the next thing they're going to target, so I wouldn't get it now personally. If you want to try it then what you said about having a secondary monitor in 1080p for problematic content is probably the best solution, but provided your 1080p monitor isn't some shitbox, you could probably sell it and with the money from it added to the money you were going to spent on a 1440p monitor get a single 4K monitor instead.
>>
>>108775376
Nvm I misread the last sentence, you weren't talking about getting a backup 1080p monitor. The point I was trying to make is that if one of your main usecases is gaming, you can get the 1440p monitor for gaming in high resolution, and keep a 1080p for tasks that would look bad on 1440p like watching media or graphical work.
>>
1440p is just double 720p and most content since 2006 assumes you watching in 720p or better.
>>
>>108775321
Panel type matters more than resolution. 4k would look absolutely awful if every pixel on that 4k updates at 5ms instead of 0.03ms on a 1440p qd.
>>
>>108775321
idk bro all monitors are fucking hot steam dogshit in 2026.
So my "old" IPS 4k monitor I had broke exactly 1 month after warranty ended.
So I bought a 4k OLED for 900 bucks and this shit broke too and after not even a week of using it.
monitor would hang up in a never ending RGB loop. really cool.
then I got a "cheaper" IPS 4k monitor to replace the shitty OLED and guess what, piece of shit also broke. 30% of the screen are dark and it didnt even last a 2 weeks.
I bought all these monitors from different places and different manufacturers and they had arrived in mint condition, there were no signs of prior usage so I'm sure I wasnt scammed or anything like thaty

also my other second monitor which is a 60hz 1080p Samsung from 2009 is still going strong fyi and this thing literally runs 24/7 ever since I got it.

1080p still relevant.
2K (1440p) is nice but not necessary
4K is useless

t. just buying 1080p DUMB TV while having 2K monitors (for work). Literally no difference seen. In fact i like the big screens
>>
>>108775447
This is why I stick with Dell. Their shit just works and if it doesn't they give you 3-5 years of warranty.

4K is great tho

>>
>>108775497
*50 Inches
My Dumb TV is 42 inch at 1080p
>>
>>108775321
4k is the only viable resolution for a decently sized monitor. Obviously 1080p/1440p will be fine your shitty ass stinkpad, but for actual users we want 4k
>>
>>108775497
are you dumb? higher pixel density means sharper image.
a 27 inch OLED 4k will look much better than the 60 inch 4k TV.
>>
Raster performance at 4k is a joke. The only really wildcard is that things are rendered so piss poor at native resolution these days it hurts the value proposition of 1440p. Why bother with native if it looks like shit too?

Got a 1440p IPS monitor recently and it's great. I'll buy a 4k OLED monitor if it ever becomes the new standard.

Its not gonna be a new standard. Too much resources
>>
>>108775565
higher pixel density makes a better image.
no wonder you think 4k is crap, stretched on 60 inches it looks like ass.

At least with 1440p you can still get ~96 dpi panels. With 4k, you end up having to use non-integer scaling which looks like crap. I'm still holding out for large screens with ~192 dpi at a decent price (it's gonna be a long wait).

When will the gaymers finally abandon the 1440p coperes?

The actual pro-gamers all use 1080p low settings fast panels
The gamers that have sense use 1080p or 4K
Offices use 1080p or 4K
Creative uses 1080p or 4K
Business uses 1080p or 4K
Schools use 1080p or 4K
Universities use 1080p or 4K
Stores use 1080p or 4K
Even the in store displays at the fast food sloppa and stores are using 1080p or 4K
Boomers and their TVs use 1080p or 4K or even 8K

The ONLY people buying 1440p and dealing with terrible scaling, nothing (besides video games) being the size it's supposed to be are meme PC gaymers who think it's a "sweet spot" when it's really a cope spot nothing at all is designed for. Some even cope by calling it "2K"

If you are on 1440p you got played. Should've just stuck with 1080p or bumped up to a real res with proper scaling, 4K.
>>
>>108776310
Why would I want to play 1080p anything on my 1440p monitors?

I use 1080p because it makes everything look nicer. On my other 4K monitor, some things look okay, but others are totally blurry and some text is completely illegible. 4K is like the Linux of monitors, you always have to tweak something.

Assuming you’re not playing on something like a Switch 1 that can’t do 1440p at all, what’s wrong with 1440p for gaming? AFAICT all games will just work at whatever resolution you ask them to use
t. uses 5K for computing and 4K for gaming with his Switch and now Switch 2
>>
even a blackwell 6000 cannot drive modern slop at 4k.

4K is also the only one that can emulate a CRT well, or so I always hear. Everyone I ask says anything below that is garbage.

The main reason to go 1440p is so you can get a larger monitor without it looking overly pixelated. If you're satisfied with its current size, then there's not much reason to go bigger. Avoid high-DPI screens if you can because you'd need to use scaling to compensate. Blurry software is still a problem even today. 1440p at ~32" is the sweet spot for 100% scaling.
>>
>>108775321
my wife has big boobs...
>>
>>108775321
4k is too demanding on current hardware, 1080p is insufficient in current_year. 1440p is the best compromise atm
>>
>>108784293
Yeah 4k i know is definitely beyond a standard even to this day.
And yet i know a YouTuber that has 3 4k monitors strapped to one computer.
>>
>>108784581
It doesn't take much to drive a 4k display unless you're running modern games. Even integrated graphics can handle basic desktop usage without any trouble.
>>
>>108784694
I guess, but the same YouTuber was actually running that Lethal Company clone R.E.P.O. and it broke for him. And he had a 4090.
>>
>>108775321
I don't really care. I'd even go back to 1080p, but 1080p on 27" looks ass. I will keep my hardware for a while, if I have to go down in Res, I'll just use FSR.
>>
>>108784714
I only have a 16" Laptop, 1080p @ 60hz IPS, and i've been pretty cool with it for 4 years now...

Kinda looking forward to my next upgrade though, which has a 16" 2.5k @ 144hz IPS.

Which will be the first time i experience triple digit FPS
>>
>>108775321
After upgrading I realize that about after 90fps I just don't care.
Can I see the difference between 90 and 144 and 240? Yes, but I just don't give a shit at that point.
I absolutely regret geting a HRR 1440p monitor over ANY 4k.
>>
>>108784741
And then you have CRT TVs that go half-a-thousand FPS, but i don't think human eyes are that fast.

It's like the stigmatism of needing 192 000 Hz sound quality, but actually only needing 48 000 Hz, because humans can only precieve 20 000 but with extra steps. Thus is where the 48 000 Hz comes from...
>>
>>108775321

I think 1440p is pretty hideous from a text rendering standpoint and don't game. My setup right now is a 3K (2880x1800) portable OLED monitor with two 120hz 1080p monitors atop it I have from work. It's pretty cozy to me.
