>Samsung earned $5B in profits in 2023
>Samsung earned $31B in profits in 2025
>Samsung employees are striking for a share of the profits
>Samsung offered $340,000 to each worker
>Samsung workers rejected the offer, say they want what SK Hynix offered, which is $477,000 bonus this year, then $900,000 next year

Why are Samsung employees so GREEDY?

Don't they know if they continue their strike, there's going to be a GLOBAL SHORTAGE of chips/ram/GPUs/etc?

Why are they like this?

Who is /g/ siding with?

Stop HURTING the BUSINESS! They company NEEDED that $30B in recognized profits (with more that isn't declared because it's re-invested into the company). How will the company GROW without $30,000,000,000+? How will they hire more people? Don't retarded COMMIES know that the money would trickle down at the end anyways? Why do you want to get paid nearly a MILLION dollars for FREE while not doing EXTRA WORK?
>>
>>108776027
You work in this industry but unfortunately, you were not born to a country that values it's people or serves their interests first. That goes to Asian countries.

Instead, you're a slave who happened to move up to the "Executive Slave" position, contributing far more than any of these regular factory workers do to your company but earning far, far less. Those go to the shareholders and CEO because you don't have anyone who represents you.

KEEEEK well you see little man: Your fellow """"people"""" sold you out before you were born by drop-shipping 100% of all industry to them in the 60s because, at the time, they were making microchips for pennies on the dollar. Now that the shoe is on the other foot, the Government (Who is a real government and not servile slaves of the Chosen Ones who were promised the entire planet 2000 years ago) put in checks and balances to ensure their labor could never leave them again and industry would remain perfectly safe in their homogenous country.

You get to fight and beg for the same position for $50K, which you will not get, because your country gave up the ability to even build the factories these workers stand in because the lack of Government regulation and accountability let Silicon Valley drop-ship the entirety of- what should have been- state secrets that were highly protected. It's never coming back. You'll be fighting for minimum wage jobs before a singular politician even admits that maybe allowing outsourcing on trivial tasks is more harmful in the long run than protectionism.
>>
>>108776089
Well you can't, the reason the tariffs and attempts to lure manufacturing back to the US do not work is because this is effectively a lawless land of chaos and disorder. The amount that these companies would pay to ship these factories back here would eclipse any salary these workers are asking for. Worse: Once the factories are here, you, person with 0 manufacturing experience or training, would get none of those jobs. They would fly the same workers demanding pay increases in to work here. Or worse: The shareholders who are now emboldened by the factories being relocated to a lawless land of chaos, would instantly rally for 100% of the workforce to be replaced by H1B Jeets. Because if they're going to hire someone with zero manufacturing experience, they're going to hire someone who will do the job for 5K a year, not 50K.

In all ways, manufacturing and industry in the Land of the Free is cooked.

>>>Samsung workers rejected the offer, say they want what SK Hynix offered, which is $477,000 bonus this year, then $900,000 next year

Hynix did not offer them these figures randomly. Hynix put in place with the workers agreements for yearly profit sharing percentage. It's 10-15% of profits. That's where the numbers are coming from.

Right now Samsung is offering a ONE-TIME bonus and they know they are making even more next year. Samsung better just put the deal in place they are already losing billions on this 20 day strike.

Uh, BASED? FUCK communists! Ford made $20B in profits in 2023. If they had a revenue sharing scheme, workers would've been paid an extra $400-800k that year, depending on how profit sharing went, like what the communist company SK Hynix did. This would mean Ford couldn't reinvest into their own company and make better trucks.
>>
>>108775967
Samsung and SK Hynix shareholder here.

Those workers didn't drive the share value up, the AI bubble did.
And when it all comes crashing down will they also take responsibility and give their bonus back before committing seppuku? - or will they blame the AI bubble that time?

If they want to share in the profits they can buy shares like anyone else.
But they don't want that because they only want the ride up not the dips down.

I actually think that the dodge v ford decision didn't go far enough, naturally the only purpose of an enterprise should be to enrich its owners; almost all corporate profits should be paid out as dividends. And yet, in our legal system, it is perfectly permissible for a company to pay no dividends to its owners? How does that make any sense?
>>
>>108776561
You're not wrong. The business owner assumed all the risk when he started his business. He grew the business himself. If Nvidia is worth $5,140,000,000,000, why should ANY of his workers be entitled to his profits? You don't like it? Get another job, and fuck off. Plenty of people will be willing to worth for less.

It's like when the courts blocked Elon's $56,000,000,000 payout package. It's HIS money.
>>
>>108776561
Dodge v. Ford isn't as relevant to modern corpo issues as people think it is. You aren't legally required to maximize profit for shareholders at all costs, the private sector does it entirely of its own volition.

>>108776561
>it is perfectly permissible for a company to pay no dividends to its owners? How does that make any sense?
Because many owners/shareholders don't want dividends.
You have to pay taxes over dividends.
And many shareholders just end up buying extra shares with their dividend earnings.

I have my own company and I give myself the lowest wage legally allowed and only pay dividend when I need the money.
Instead I invest my company's profits on the stock market which makes any losses tax deductable.
Eventually I'll get a bank loan against my company's assets to get access to the money without paying taxes.

We literally used to, they were called 401Ks. Every white collar worker used to get a 401K plan, which was investment in the company and the most profitable parts of the market.

Nobody works white collar jobs anymore, they're all "Contractors" or gig jobs. So nobody has a 401K. Unions may have prevented them from laying everyone off and hiring them back as contractors with no rights, but this ultimately comes down as a failure by the government for not regulating this in the first place when it happened the first time. This was something no government would have tolerated even 30 years ago.

That's a myth.
Starting a business usually isn't risky at all.

Sure you'll have some personal money and a lot of personal time invested in it.
But when it goes bust it's the bank and your customers who end up footing the bill.
Then you rinse and repeat until maybe after going bankrupt 5 times you get lucky and spawn a profitable business.

You might never get lucky and waste a lot of time.
But it won't ruin your life, you'll just have to go back to being a wage slave.

>>
>>108776715
Well yes.
But I guess my real point is laws are made to offer tax loopholes to rich people and business owners.

If they made dividends mandatory some very rich and powerful people would make sure those politicians never gets elected ever again.
>>
>>108776731
Incorrect. Business owners assume massive risk and deserve massive reward for doing so. If a business fails the business owner dies. If a business fails then employees simply get another job after bending a different business owner over the barrel. Face it. Employees are parasites. Thankfully AI is here to replace them.

On thing is that an argument could be made that tying wages with company performance creates incentives that maximize shareholder value anyways. I mean isn't that how performance-based bonuses work?

Secondly, this entire issue can be sidestepped by offering stock options, turning employees into stakeholders themselves. If you as an employee would rather just take cash instead of stock options, it means you think the company is going to be worth less over time. So the question becomes why you think you're entitled to a slice of the profits when you aren't willing to take a slice of the losses. Like you either are invested in the company or just work there, you gotta choose.

>>
>>108778547
We already know. Try to make more profits. These people are addicted to just amassing more and more money and power. They're also beholden to shareholders who demand growth which means bigger profits rather than just sustainable profits. You can sometimes make concessions and redistribute the profits, but you can't fix the root of the problem without dismantling the fucked-up system that is capitalism itself.

That's what we call a good bargaining position.
>>
From a game theory perspective these workers have insane leverage. They can't be quickly replaced and the entire global economy is dependent on their continuous output.

The moment the profit 6x'd they could ask for 6x compensation because what the fuck is the company going to do? Risk production shutdown, fire everyone and training new workers that maybe are up and running in 2 years time?

I would be asking for a $2,000,000 bonus in their position, they have the leverage to pull it off.
>>
OMG you misinformed mfers pissed me off so much I got off my ass and to a real computer.
>>108778654
It's USD$340,000 per worker. Yes, you are reading it correctly. And they are bitching because their main competition, SK Hynix, is paying AN EVEN HIGHER BONUS to their workers.
Samsung is in the middle of a windfall, literally choking on the spigots of cash it's making from the AI boom. All that money you're spending on inflated RAM, CPU, graphics cards? It's going to manufacturers that have jacked up prices to the point that the workers are demanding some of it as well.
This is the power of organized labor.
>>108776315
>How come workers at Tesla or Amazon or Microsoft don't get a percent of what their employer makes?
They do. It's called WAGES. Anything saved on wages becomes extra profit.
> NO I MEAN PROFIT SHARING
I hate people that don't understand basic business finance and accounting. That you don't understand how that works is why you're a wagie to begin with. Go take a fucking class or something.
> BUT MUH PROFIT SHARING
Fine. I'll pick UAW. Go look at their most recent contract negotiations with GM, Ford, and Stellantis (or w/e the fuck it's called now). Line guys are making $87K average as a base, along with substantial overtime, plus a profit sharing plan.
Tesla's avoided UAW (along with NADA franchised dealership nonsense.)
Amazon has so far managed to avoid unionization (the one place it took hold, NJ, they are still refusing to bargin with lol.)
Microsoft outsources manufacturing, for a variety of reasons, and unions aren't strong with white collar. Not that any of them are hurting, anyway.
t. former auto. Worst industry ever, except maybe oil and gas
>>
>>108778754
It's not just that. Chips are a cutthroat game. There are only a handful of players in the global market. The longer Samsung goes without production (already 20 days into the strike) the longer other companies will eat up their market share. For example, deals and contracts are made for years in advance. If some airplane company signs for $10B worth of chips over the next 5 years, that's something Samsung will miss out on.

It's why the US wanted to prevent China from making advanced chips. Because if they did, they would get $1T for free, in perpetuity every year, should they corner the entire market.

The workers aren't even asking for much, Samsung earns way more than SK Hynix, and the workers' compensation is lower.

Problem is that Samsung was ever into profit sharing. They kept their wages extremely low, and had insane profit margins. If this contract is not short term, and it's for every year going forward, they'd be losing billions in paying their workers high-6/low-7 figure bonuses every year.

Imagine if every Korean lived like Qataris, earning millions every year, and being able to buy everything they've ever needed because they're sitting on wealth (chips) like Qataris do oil/gas.

>>
>>108779851
Not really. If Samsung's stock went up 500%, they're getting paid more than 500% of their salary if they win this strike. And they didn't have to invest all their money into stocks, they could be getting paid a salary + getting a split of the profits.

This could also be in perpetuality. Getting paid a base salary + $1M every year.
>>
>>108780065
Stock growth is exponential the longer employees work. Someone who worked 1 year and is paid 1 year of stock doesnt have same as someone who has worked 5 years or 10 or 20 years. You cant reap the rewards from 1 years work at the company as the value of your own contribution is minimal. But for someone who has worked for the company for 10+ years with stocks, their rewards are in tens of millions to hundreds of millions. If they had chosen stock

We saw the same thing here in Germany.

The "REAL" owner of a company would own 100% of it. You want financing without control go talk to a bank or sell a fucking bond. He didn't, he sold his control. You may be a little slow, so let me spell it out for you - selling something means you no longer have it. You don't get to shit on minority shareholders just because they are a minority.

You also can't just refuse to give any justification on why you did something as the CEO, or you get fucked in courts. Without a "higher wages allow the company to retain top talent and maintain market position" there is no difference between giving a raise to all employees and wiring all of the company's money to your mistress

Because the value of stocks is inversly correlated to the spend on employees.
If these employees win the fight their salary will go up, but the stock value will go down.
If they lose the stock will go up, but not their salary.
If instead of buying shares in the company you work for you bought them for the company you don't, you could enjoy BOTH a higher salary from your work for the workers winning AND higher stock value from the other company from their workers losing.
Not to mention that as the value of your company goes down the risk of your position being cut goes down, so you have a higher risk exposure than other investors.

In short, the goals of the employee and the shareholder are in opposition. Investing in your workplace has negative alpha compared to pure investors.

It hasn't though,
Output hasn't increased.

The wokers aren't working harder, better or smarter.

The only thing that increased is demand.

Samsung gives 13% of its profits to employees as bonuses, SK Hynix 10%.
The real difference is Samsung is a massive company with many divisions, whereas SK Hynix really just makes RAM.
The Samsung employees making RAM chips demand higher bonuses.
The Samsung employees making SOC chips will get nothing.
The Samsung employees making phones will get nothing.
The Samsung employees making screens will get nothing.

This is why Samsung should just pay them btw

Their knowledge is so in demand and critical right now that customers are willing to spend hundreds of millions to buy the EUV machines needed to make the ram for these companies. They just don't know how to make it themselves. Hynix is losing money by being at over 100% capacity and just not able to accept extra work.
But if they suddenly gained a few more employees looking for some opportunities. Samsung's upper level greed is going to fuck them if this keeps up.

Why do Americans hate their own workers and despise skilled labor so much? Is it an inferiority complex?

You can't hire unskilled jeets to push some buttons because these chips are working at tolerances that are on the atomic level. You require almost lifelong training and a skilled workforce who is highly educated with extremely high IQs and is well-protected in functioning unions.

The USA *****USED***** to have this, but then everyone since the 1970s until today started doing this: >>108783686 Laying everyone off, thus breaking the generational cycle of manufacturing and apprenticeship, replacing them with Dahlits, and having to eternally live with their balls in China, Japan, or Korea's hands because no other country is jewish or stupid enough to intentionally sacrifice their workforce like we did.

Samsung has two options:
- pay up and actually earn that money
- let them strike and lose both employees to SKH and revenue

If 15% of profit is 400k for everyone, so be it. What were they going to do that the remaining 85% is not enough?
>>
>>108785482
If they increased that payout by 2.5-5x, a lot of them gooks are set for life and just gonna quit on the spot anyway. Better to just fire them right now and keep the profits, not like SKHynix has the capacity or capital to hire all of Samsung's employees anyway

>If they increased that payout by 2.5-5x, a lot of them gooks are set for life and just gonna quit on the spot anyway.
Do Americans really believe that if they don't charge slave labor prices then everyone will just quit and don't work? As noted by the article: SKH employees already make this amount, and they haven't quit because for one, they are masters training apprentices and they are valued enough to care about the future of their trade. For two, if they quit, then they quit making that money, and they are the only skilled labor in the world right now making this money during the height of an economic boom.

I know burgermutts have been brainraped by jewish financial into thinking that if they don't suffer 24/7 with zero recourse to fight their fellow worker for worse than table scraps, then the entire world will goosestep to communism and Stalin will rise again, but the rest of the world isn't like that. Most of the world values the effort of their labor and disputes are about how long their tenure should be and not how little they can get away with paying them.
