Does anyone use Debian as a desktop distro over Ubuntu? Why do people use Ubuntu as a desktop when Debian (its base) exists? Am I missing something?
Ubuntu is more up to date by default.
>>108776068I think Ubuntu is kinda mid. Besides forced snaps, ads, and the occasional telemetry, I also found it to be less stable than Debian, Mint, or LMDE. I'd use all of these distros over Ubuntu any day, LMDE in particular.
>>108776068It's because Debian by default is very behind, so if you want to have access to newer software in the repos then you need to switch to Testing or Sid. Those come with their own downsides (they're basically rolling like Arch), so Ubuntu gives you a stable fixed-release distribution with up-to-date Debian packages.
>>108776068Debian is like 2x faster than Ubuntu that's all you need to know.
>>108776068Ubuntu is more complete by default so it works better for a desktop use case. Of course, you can tune Debian to be equal/better than Ubuntu. It's just a matter of preference and free time.
>>108776101It also breaks if you look at funny
>>108776628I've been using LTS for almost a decade and I can count on one hand the times something has broken.
Way back in the day debian testing would break sometimes and sid would be permabroken. So Ubuntu fit a niche where it was newer than base Debian but still rock solid. It also had a much easier graphical installer and live cd for noobs. These days you can pretty much run sid as a daily driver if you wan to and Debian's no harder to install than Ubuntu is.
I run debian sid on my android tv box. I tried to get a bluetooth dongle working yesterday. I couldn't do it. On arch it was plug-and-play. Debian is very much an expert distro.

>>108776683I'm using lts right now are work and my apt is broken
Threads like this are always shit, because the few who have actually tried various OS's out never bother replying and instead it's just keyboard warriors writing useless crap. I tried Debian desktop 15+ years ago and there were many problems and Ubuntu was just better. I always kept Debian on my servers though. Recent years Ubuntu has been going downhill and the most recent Ubuntu 26 LTS looks like absolute garbage. Next OS upgrade I'm switching to Debian on the desktop.
>>108776068I uus debian saar. Very good system made by india ceo!
>>108778455>Ubuntu 26 LTS looks like absolute garbageWhy tho? I'm using it right now and it's one of the best distros I've used.
>>108776068Dunno, I've been using Debian for a while and it just works with all my games and shit, only had a few sound problems but the fix was one command.
>>108778607Sometimes, Debian is the _only_ distro that actually works.

Debian has a cute project leader. :3https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2079IJSx6g
>>108776068Been thinking about trying Debian XFCE after Mint XFCE.For maximum stability. But really is it worth changing to Debian XFCE if Mint XFCE just works?
>>108776068Debian if you really know what you're doing (there's lots of packages that break down because of incompatible versions. Ubuntu... I wouldn't recommend. Why not look into something like fedora or open susue. The problem with Debian is not that it's minimal and not that the packages are old (those are good things in my mind). The problem is more than the packages aren't always compatible versions so breakages happen. And if you're doing any coding you can't use the package for the compiler/interpretor or the package manager that they have in the repo
I'm really fascinated by the ecosystem of the "Stable" branch of Debian specifically. I might consider switching to it from Arch. The problem is I have grown too attached to Arch. Like I know all the pacman options and how to do fancy stuff like debloat and stuff with pacman. How hard is apt to learn?I might install this instead of Arch when I make a new clean installation for degoogling and other "avoiding evil things" experimentation.>UbuntuThat shit is evil now, wouldnt touch it with a long pole. It's being turned into Windows 11. I think they want to put this in normie OEM prebuilt PCs when Microslop dies, and need to three-letter-agency-ify it first.
>>108776068Windows 10 LTSC + Debian WSL
>>108778879apt isn't as good at uninstalling dependencies compared to pacman. but debian is nice.
>>108778947Can I extract a package manually, tweak it and then install db-only? pacman lets me do this, because the packages are really just a .tar.xst of where to put files, and some metadata.
>>108778877>The problem with Debian is not that it's minimal and not that the packages are old (those are good things in my mind). Go for Debian stable and packages will be old, but very compatible.>>108778879>How hard is apt to learn?apt is horror as soon as you get any sort of conflict. You definitely want to learn something like aptitude instead.
>>108778966Yes, I think that's called equivs.>>108778982>apt is horror as soon as you get any sort of conflictIt really knows how to make you feel stupid!

>>108778872LMDE exists specifically for people like you. You'll be using debian but it's still mint.
>use Debian as a desktop distro over UbuntuI was running Debian Testing/Sid mix as a kind of slow roll system. I ended up just trying Arch again after doing a little more reading and it's been fine. OpenSUSE Slowroll will be my next distro if this Arch install shits itself somehow.
>>108776068>Does anyone use Debian as a desktop distro over Ubuntu? Yes.>Why?I got sick of dealing with problems from my years of Manjaro, I'm too much of a pussy for Arch and since I hate forced snaps I wasn't bothered with Xubuntu(xfce fag here).I just want a computer with good zfs support that I can reliably play games on. I don't care about muh 1% better frames from a newer Nvidia driver.
Yeah. I don't know because I am not part of a hive mind. A good firewall setup out the box.
