why aren't software engineers getting any tips?
>>
They ask. Those buy me a coffee things. People don't pay for a lot of stuff online thats why google are trying to pack more adverts into everything and everyone is going to subscription models.

The physical effort isn't why being a waiter sucks ass.

interacting with the general public is far more physically taxing than working in a coal mine
>>
>>108776407
>t. never worked with stakeholders as a swe
>>
>>108776415
As a developer I have never encountered a stakeholder. That's what the PM is for.
>>
>>108776376
it was for the two days I worked as a waiter before they fired me for repeatedly dropping food and spilling drinks
>>
>>108776321
Waiters have to live in high cost areas where they serve the food. Lot of waiters cannot survive without tips because their salaries barely cover rent.
>>
>he's never gotten a peer bonus
lmao get a real job
>>
>>108777086
Maybe they should have turned down the job if it isn't financially feasible to live on? If everyone did that they would be paid a fair wage, instead we have this retarded shit
>>
>>108776407
yeah, getting into some awkward situations is definitely harder than literal CO poisoning or black lung disease.
>>
>>108776407
mentally taxing? maybe, i might find it so
PHYSICALLY taxing? you are impressively retarded
>>
>>108776407
i've cooked and i've waited. as someone who hates people, waiting is MUCH easier. servers are just a bunch of whiny bitches, although the hot ones you can at least put up with
>>
>make some shitty thing
>buy me a coffee
>never have to work again
>>
>>108777067
Based retard. Don't be ashamed of that because everyone is above customer service work.
>>
>>108776321
The dumbest thing with tipping waiters is that it's a percentage of the price. Why do you deserve more for carrying a steak with gold flakes from the kitchen to my table than you do for a 5 dollar plate of chicken tendies from the kids menu?
>>
>>108776321
I want to print this in postcard size and leave it in every one of those cheque books those waiters give me.
>>
>>108777300
I went to some expensive place in Las Vegas and because of the percentage, the waiter wanted $80 in tip. Even the fucking greeter or host or whatever (the cuck that said where my table is and did nothing else) wanted $80. Fuck that shit, I gave them $20 each and just dealt with their irritated faces when I left.
>>

>>
>>108777153
They'd just give it some fresh immigrant who doesn't mind working for peanuts. So no it wouldn't result in everyone being pair fair wages.
>>
>>108777317
>I gave them $20 each
should have done $0.00 and say that you're from Europe
>>
>>108777889
I'd only just arrived in the US at that time, I hardened within the next few weeks and told some greeter at another place to take up his shit wage issues with his boss.
>>
>>108776321
wouldn't the server share the tip with the kitchen? for which country is that comic strip?
>>
>>108777932
Some restaurants I've been to in the US list it all out individually, so there are percentage sections for
>cooks
>waiters
>greeters/hosts
Usually they set that with 15% as the 'recommended' tip amount but encourage you to make it more. If you had a big meal, you get thoroughly fucked when the bill comes when they want 15% a piece.

there's a few projects that work via community members financing devs through tips/donations, e.g. Linux Mint, much of the Babashka/Clojure stack.
But by and large people seem to prefer to let companies harvest their data and use ad-ridden software than donate some money to good projects.

And how did you come to know that exactly? Do they tell you how much tip they want or what? I can't imagine the exact situation and the sentences they'd say.

In France some establishments started to ask for tips from the payment terminal a couple years ago. I don't know how I feel about that, it's clearly pushy but the wages are low compared to the price of life here. No way for me to know if the money actually goes to the waiter. I'm also not paying 5 extra eurodollars or more for each beer I take.

Anti-tippers are the most spiritually and/or physically brown people on the planet. You can’t even call it Jewish behavior because that insults their intelligence.

You tip service because you can’t put an objective price on your experience with it, but it still matters, so it needs to be bargained for. This incentivizes service workers to make you comfortable, not just serviced. If restaurants stopped accepting tips, they’d just raise menu prices to make up the difference. It isn’t “le greedy minimum wagies” it’s making a portion of their income dependent on their PERFORMANCE and giving YOU CONTROL. You’re the same cattle that want the government to handle healthcare and education on top of being welfare leeches reliant on the net input of others into the system to prop it up for your gibs.

I don’t tip my barista in the drivethru, they’re fulfilling an order, just as I don’t tip McDonald’s workers or Walmart clerks. I tip my delivery drivers and wait staff 20% on average, they can make or break the experience depending on the care they put in. I tip my hairdresser 25-50%, they spend half an hour tending to my head and do their damndest to make it easygoing both physically and conversationally. I reward behavior I want to see in my life and reject behavior I don’t want to see, and thank god they haven’t taken away my opportunity to do so because antisocial retards can’t see it for what it is.

Back in the good old middle ages, restaurants would be more like buffets, where the waiter would walk around with the plate with the goods, and try to tempt the customers. The rich would try to earn favour of the waiter, and give him money to be prioritized. And THIS is why we pay the waiter tips, so we can go first in line! And btw, I just made up that story, it's bullshit

Tips are very much a thing in Germany. Maybe not a fixed amount of X% (you just round up X euros) and maybe not in a coffee shop, but I have never NOT seen someone tip in a normal restaurant, old or young, except for some reddit basedboys I used to hang out with in university

>>
>>108778450
The unspoken part is that tipped workers can make very good money but they have to complain about poverty wages to keep up the charade. Restaurants that pay 'living wages' and dont allow tips lose all their best waitstaff to tipping establishments. The biggest reason that tipping is so entrenched is that tipped workers LOVE being tipped.

The comic does cut to the heart of the injustice imo- tipped workers make very good money compared to other, harder, non service occupations. Especially if they are cute girls.

My wife noticed that there weren't a lot of female waitstaff in Italy - I suspect that without tipping girls arent incentivized to do it.

>And how did you come to know that exactly? Do they tell you how much tip they want or what?
Yes, you get the 'suggested' tip amount listed on the bill. The tip is a percentage of the meals cost, so a $100 meal would create a $15 tip for the waiter based on the standard 15% tipping in the US.

>>108776321

Yeah, coming for the software engineers. People still want to interact with humans over a soulless robot. AI will be taking the jobs of managers, accountants, lawyers, and corporate stooges. White collar workers are getting the ax first despite all the doomerism against the essential workers. Covid showed us which workers actually keep the nation running.

Not waiters and all that shit, people went full Uber Eats and Doordash and that remains extremely pervasive.

Tech workers are going to be the last to get replaced. Bubble will pop in 1-2 years and then they will be forced to hire tons of new SWEs. I think other white collar workers are fucked though, finance, HR etc where all they do is spreadsheets and send emails. You can put debugging output into claude and it can make accurate spreadsheets for you in 5 seconds.
