North Korea has a Linux based operating system called RedStarOS.
What are your thoughts on it?

Could it theoretically be possible that North Korea may have the 'best' Linux devs on Earth due to state backing? Lots of modifications would have to be made even if a good load of RedStarOS is copied Linux tech.

this is moon logic
>>
It's the best Linux distro because they seem to understand platform targets and design.

Also both ironically and unfortunately the best design for Unix and Unix-like systems is to copy MacOS.
>>
I've never heard that North Korea got hacked

That's either a sign that the OS and by proxy Linux is very secure or the NK government is very good at covering it up.

Oddly enough, this may be the only distro without Age Verification and Woke bullshit. It may ironically become the distro of choice for freedom-loving individuals in the underground. How strange these things end up. :o

You'd think that it would be XFCE. I figured that KDE would be too much for what the average North Korean would have hardware wise if they even have a chance at getting it.

They probs don't have a lot of computers to be hacked. They don't even have many phones, which leads to stats like pic related.

They managed to develop a direct alternative to macOS, something linux bros seem to have a lot of issues with. A working global menu (not the dogshit Plasma uses that isn't compatible with half the programs), a file manager that strongly resembles Finder and seems to behave the same way. Padding seems neat. It seems to be heavily modeled after Mavericks or older, but that was peak OSX design.
Really it's a shame. elementaryOS can only get 1 thing right (column view), GNOME seems to be grabbing bits and pieces and they act like they don't, like teenage girls, like I mentioned Plasma got the global menu, but no one's committing to actually try to make a macOS replacement.

only about 10k people in north korea can browse the internet and yes most of them use macs and iphones

>>108777771
Ironically it's one of the most comfy looking Linux distros I've seen despite being filled to the brim with spyware.

Substantiate your claim (you can't)

It watermarks all media files stored on it with a unique ID to track potential whistleblowers or defectors.

I'm glad we agree that you can't substantiate your claim that it's "filled to the brim" with spyware.

I like to think Red Star OS is botnet-free because the DPRK is already such an oppressive surveillance state that baking it into computer software is superfluous.

I do find this fascinating. My problem is that even with virtual machines I'm too scared to install this thing as I fear getting super hacked. NK probably is a huge player in the cybercrime/cyber warfare space.

>>108777820
I hate how correct you might be about this.

>>108779681
Probably a high ranking officer.
>>108780533
>yes most of them use macs and iphones
Is this just a status symbol given how macs and iphones are a bit pricey even outside North Korea?

Only iPhones there have to ping Apple to work. That is what you see in the statistics. The custom Huawei phones bought from China have North Korea's own Android version that doesn't ping anywhere ever. Those don't show in any public statistics ever. There is probably 100k or multiple millions of those Android phones there.

Also RedStarOS posted here is the old version and the latest one isn't leaked yet.
