Let's discuss USB ports

I feel like too much resources were invested into Type-A ports; With USB4 being C-only I feel like we might be stuck with 3.2 speeds for a while
>>
i don't like USB C for anything other than phone charging, it's so flimsy

>>
>let's make one universal port for everything
>proceeds to create 10 variants of the port
Thanks technology
>>
>>108778673
My issue with them is that their size wastes space when you have a set of them
pic rel of USB-As is not possible with -Cs, you can't just place them THAT close each other
>>
>>108778692
it's a universal protocol, not port
>>
>>108778692
port variations are mostly fine, previously you couldn't really make all formfactors work properly
the only ones that objectively suck are USB3 micros. Just look at this monstrosity
>>
>>108778760
it was specifically created as an universal port, though
>>

>universal protocol
Except it isn't. My laptop USB-C can't charge my spare battery despite outputting 15W and the battery only requiring 5W input. But it can charge my phone, provided I use a specific cable. And if I use the USB-A to C port on my laptop, it can charge my phone with any cable. On the other hand my external speaker with a USB-C input won't charge with my laptop with any cable.

USB is a fucking nightmare. Even if we don't cover the retarded naming schemes, you never know if the gadget you bought is going to work with the cable you have, or if it'll only work with a USB-A to C cable, or if it'll require a dedicated wall charger to negotiate the right power output.
>>
>>108779517
>My laptop USB-C can't charge my spare battery despite outputting 15W and the battery only requiring 5W input
That's purely on the manufacturer on the battery.
The standard clearly dictates all sink devices need a resistor to tell the source device to enable power output. There is no ambiguity here.
However certain manufacturers are treating a type C port like a drop in for a microUSB port and ignoring the requirements.

Also charging cables are a lot less confusing when you realize there is only 2 you need to worry about. Either a 3 amp or 5 amp one.

>Also charging cables are a lot less confusing when you realize there is only 2 you need to worry about. Either a 3 amp or 5 amp one.
how the fuck am I supposed to sort 3 and 5 amperes cables?
>>
>>108779517
that's because USB-Cancer is (((smart))) bullshit that's spying on your devices and also disallows DIY cables of whatever the fuck length you want.
>>
>>108778873
Port starts with a B does it? It's Universal Serial Bus you retards.
>>
>>108779666
>usb-c is smart bullshit
That's the problem, half the USB-C ports on the market aren't even "smart" ports. Manufacturers of cheap shit want to save $0.20 by not including a regulating chip. They're just USB-A in disguise.
>cable length
you just can't push power at 5v through a 6ft cord. The cord length restrictions actually do make sense and high voltage is the one thing USB-C is good at.
>>
>>108779629
Almost every single cable you buy or get with a device is likely 3A, unless you are explicitly sold a 100w or 5A cable.
>>
>>108779715
nah, I mean how the fuck am I gonna differentiate between them when I unpack them and put in my bag
>>
>>108778669
proprietary ports that are just USBs are fucking cancer
>PlayStation 4's AUX port is just USB 3 sans USB 2 compatibility
>PSV charging port is also USB
>and mystery port is also fucking USB
>>
>>108779814
It's usually intuitive to notice when they look different. The cable to my phone with 100w charging is bright yellow while everything else is black or orange.

IDK how you get into a situation where you suddenly have multiple different spec cables that look exactly the same that you willingly put into a bag. 5 amp cables aren't expensive to just use for everything.
>>
>>108780470
>color coding
iirc le standard only specifies
>Blue for USB3
which is only applicable with Type-A, as Type-C was introduced in USB3
>>
>>108778669
i always "misplace" (lose) the type B cables on the right whenever i move
not sure how
>>
>>108779517
This is what happens when companies take the USB standard and cut corners, especially when some gadget that has the USB branding can't even work with another cable or charger.
>>
>>108780754
Standard Type-Bs are so weird
I only saw them being used on goddamn printers
>>
>>108780799
yeah, I don't have spares so I probably just notice when I lose them. My monitor uses one and ofc my printer
>>
>>108780799
Also upstream hubs like docks, and external optical drives. USB B is the goat and does not deserve the hate. It does exactly what it needs to which is make sure certain data streams are semi-duplex.
>>
>>108780821
>My monitor uses
For power? Somehow never had a monitor that relied on that cable
>>
>>108780838
It has a USB hub built in, so on the monitor side it is type B to PC side type A

>>
>>108780848
so it's for video? I know that USB can function as DisplayPort but that always felt like a gimmick
>>
>>108778673
I charge my phone and tablet on suspended cables, just hanging from the plug
been doing it for years and absolutely fine. I can't imagine what people must be doing to fuck them up do bad
>>
>>108780855
i think it's the standard
>>108780859
data, not video. it's basically just a USB hub built into the monitor. the type C cable can do that & DP too. so if i plug in my laptop i just press shift on my keyboard and it switches mouse and kb from my desktop to my laptop
>>
>>108780873
oh okay, that actually sounds pretty neat
>>
>>108780855
that is usb3 a to b, the technically most standard one, even if its not that common
>>
>>108778797
>the only ones that objectively suck are USB3 micros. Just look at this monstrosity
It's ugly but works just fine.
The asymmetrical design makes it easier to tell which side is up.

And I think not enough people realized the regular micro cables also work just at 2.0 speeds.
So if you had it on your phone it was fine for charging and even transferring modest amounts of data if you only had access to regular micro cables.
>>
>>108780855
>>108780936
yeah USB3 Bs are just awful
the devs probably didn't want to "waste" resources on something they were planning to replace with Type-C
>>
>>108780947
having an "incomplete" port feels like something that might break yout tech, looks too hacky
>>
>>108779517
>My laptop USB-C can't charge my spare battery
That's probably because your spare battery wants to charge your laptop instead.
Does it have a dedicated charging port?
>>
>>108780956
why its awful?
it is probably the better device side conector. It is jsut kinda big, so it is only used on big devices, but usb b was always like that.
usbc is simetrical that has nothing to do with the previous ones
>>
>>108780963
It looks weird but it's perfectly fine.
And the alternative would be a completely new port that breaks backwards compatibility.
>>
>>108780977
>why its awful?
see >>108780963
also usb3 micro-b is too big for something that was supposed to be micro
>usbc is simetrical that has nothing to do with the previous ones
my point is that their half-assed attempt at designing USB3 Bs feels like a preparation for Type-C
>>
>>108780980
>It looks weird but it's perfectly fine
if your USB3 B port is always occupied (on, say, a printer) and you only have USB2 cables the dust might become a problem
>Anon, your desktop's As are always open
I just don't feel that half-open port is a good idea
>>
>topping DX1
>touch USB cable ever so slightly
>disconnects
>>
>>108781019
>dust might become a problem
Dust is definitely a problem with any phone since you carry it in your pocket with the port exposed.
But it's not something a toothpick can't fix in a few seconds.

Worrying about a partially exposed port on a printer you don't care about enough to buy the proper cable for is searching for problems that don't exist.
>>
>>108781104
I don't have that issue and I move my DX1 around quite a lot on my messy desk.
Have you tried a different cable?
>>
>>108781123
yep, 3 different cables
>>
>>108781108
>Worrying about a partially exposed port on a printer you don't care about enough to buy the proper cable for is searching for problems that don't exist.
you know what? You're right
My 'tism probably just can't accept ports being different from plugs

The it's electromagnetic interference.
Some PSU, microwave, 2.4G wifi or a shitty cable next to the not-working one is acting like a radio and shitting up the signal.
>>

>buy a high end x670e mobo a few years back

granted most of the peripherals are still usb-a but 11:2 is a silly ratio
and then the 800 mobos came out and it’s still big gay

its probably the pixel/main clock from an hdmi display, hdmi is always blasting out enormous amounts of electromagnetic interference
