I think that linux would be mainstream if different hardware manufacturers had their own version, like hp linux, or thinkpad linux, or asus linux, and then they could use the OS to try to sell you more stuff. Linux is not that interesting to me, what is would be a more unified "standardized" OS system, that let you run the same programs universally, and customize you own desktop experience, and linux is not that, as of now. If you want to run software, get windows.

The whole Linux ecosystem is a jumbled mess that makes it impossible for developers to target it as a platform. The "freedom" and "choice" that Linux offers is not something the average user wants or needs and is actually detrimental. A piece of software might run on one system but not the other. Thousands of random distros, different desktop environments, Wayland vs X11, Nvidia vs AMD, dependency conflicts, different package versions and so on.

Also the Linux desktop is still decades behind Windows and MacOS when it comes to stability and useability. Basic features are missing and critical bugs stay unfixed for multiple years.

Linux sole purpose is for servers, businesses and IoT devices and it was never meant as a competitor to Windows. It's design doesn't make any sense for desktop use.

Everything is just nicer under windows. With something like Task Manager it'll show GPU usage. On GNOME they didn't implement/removed the feature. KDEs shows a GPU widget that doesn't work. The new rust tool that Ubuntu is using does work.
