If Linux is free, secure, and efficient, why does most software get developed for Windows only? Why is Windows more popular?
>>108779588most hardware come preinstalled with windows
>>108779608fpbp
>>108779588I think that linux would be mainstream if different hardware manufacturers had their own version, like hp linux, or thinkpad linux, or asus linux, and then they could use the OS to try to sell you more stuff. Linux is not that interesting to me, what is would be a more unified "standardized" OS system, that let you run the same programs universally, and customize you own desktop experience, and linux is not that, as of now. If you want to run software, get windows. Btw Linus Torvalds is probably just chatting with r*ssian hackers all day, they trying to sneak backdoors in.
>>108779588The whole Linux ecosystem is a jumbled mess that makes it impossible for developers to target it as a platform. The "freedom" and "choice" that Linux offers is not something the average user wants or needs and is actually detrimental. A piece of software might run on one system but not the other. Thousands of random distros, different desktop environments, Wayland vs X11, Nvidia vs AMD, dependency conflicts, different package versions and so on.Also the Linux desktop is still decades behind Windows and MacOS when it comes to stability and useability. Basic features are missing and critical bugs stay unfixed for multiple years.Linux sole purpose is for servers, businesses and IoT devices and it was never meant as a competitor to Windows. It's design doesn't make any sense for desktop use.
autistic userbase that normies won't touch
Walmart tried selling PCs with Linux pre-installed. It ended up being the most returned item in company history.
>>108779608That's because any hardware that isn't preinstalled with Windows gets complaints until the manufacturer installs Windows.
>>108779608^this have retailers sell linux laptops at 100$ cheaper than other laptops of the same hardware using windows, and you'd see a change, money talks more than freedom, unfortunately.
>>108779588linux being on there twice is one of the reasons
>>108779588>why does most software get developed for Windows only?Because most software is on WindowsAn unescapable cycle.
>>108780196https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Qj8p-PEwbIlol
>>108779588because government is full of blacks and they have too low IQ to learn linux, this is why when they get mac's all they do is watch youtube on them with adsi had a nig at work who bumbled his way to become a director, it walked around with a fucking personal iPad everywhere and would take notes using the apple pencil lmfao, i kid you not
>>108779588normal people with jobs and careers don't care about troonix
>>108780225Windows doesn't cost them $100. Microsoft charges somewhere in the range of $20-50 depending on price category. (You didn't think a $250 laptop had $100 of its price as Windows, did you?)
>>108780225People are willing to pay 100$ more to have Windows preinstalled. It's just that Linux is worse and corpos made sure it will say like that forever (Wayland and systemd).
>>108779588If white people are so good then how come there are billions of more third world brown people?
You're using Linux on your TV, your car, your servers, your phone, your self check out machine, your door bell, your drone, your supercomputers and mainframes etc. Only laptops and desktops still use Windows and Mac.
>>108780706The self check out machine at my local supermarket uses embedded windows. Lintoddlers btfo!
>>108780686https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R/K_selection_theory
>>108779588>most software get developed for Windows only?according to whom? there are probably 500 obscure software packages on linux developed by some guy to solve his own specific problem for every bit of software developed for windows. it's certainly much less of a hassle to develop software on linux or open source unix-like OS's in general>be op>be windows-using retard>only use commercial gui software for windows>wtf where is all the linux software
It turns out, Balmer was only half right, it turns out that users also matter. USERS!USERS! USERS!
>>108779588Autistic retards release shit ton of distros, package managers and libraries etc. Imagine being a commercial software company. Let's say you write a program to udindu sharted farted. within 2 years that program won't work on that. what about the sissy faggot who uses arch? Would you write a program to that specific setup? What about support? Software maintenance and support costs money.
>>108779852>Why don't all hardware manufacturers just become Apple in order to make Linux popularAre you fucking retarded or just catastrophically niggerfried?
>>108780243>Because most software is on Windowsbut it isn't. what software even is there on windows? it's a very niche system, unless you're developing some gui office tool why would you even bother supporting windows? if you actually bothered to count you'd no doubt find that most distributed software is just libraries and utilities used for data processing or simplifying system configurations on servers or embedded systems.windows is a niche product with a single lead use case and microsoft takes care of most of the ecosystem. linux is used on everything with a virtual memory capability and has literally millions of people and companies working on it to do god knows what
>>108779588all the good developers I met/seen use linux as their development environment. the ones that used wimdows were code monkies.
>>108779608
>>108780161Completely true, but with the jeetification of modern Windows, the appeal with the linux desktop is that things run a bit quicker even if they look rough around the edges. I cannot say I ever enjoy using any linux DE, and wish Microsoft made windows great again.
>>108781498>games>all the CAD software that engineers useThat's all it takes.
>>108779588> most software get developed for Windows onlyFake premise. There is software outside the excel-spreadshit ecosystem.
>>108781498>what software even is there on windows?I swear, this board attracts the dumbest niggers alive.
>>108779588bluhhhh buhbuhbuhbubhbuhbuhbuhbuhbuhbuhbuhbuhbubbuuubb uuuuhhh open sores trannies we got too cuckyAnyway what software do you use that is windows specific? It's not VIDEO GAMES, right? Because most of that percentage bar are video games.
>>108780206The complaints are from Microsoft. Dell used to sell laptops with FreeDOS preinstalled to skirt around MS forcing them to not sell Linux boxes.
>>108781590for real, none of these people have stepped outside and seen the average joe
>>108781498>it's a very niche systemWindows is how 99% of the world use a computer you idiot. 95% of home users, 99.9999% of office drones and government workers.
>>108780196Here in huezil they sell machines with Linux (or even fuckin FreeDOS) a bit cheaper with the expectation that most people will wipe it and pirate Windows anyway.
>>108781591adobe
>>108781621>Windows is how 99% of the world use a computer you idiot.the desktop computer use by normalfags is a drop in the global teraflop ocean. your smart TV runs linux, your phone runs linux or bsd, your toaster and fridge run linux, as does your car, as does the server sock-puppeting your simulacrum of a human female that you use to combat your loneliness
>>108781590>the dumbest niggers alive.again, what software even is there on windows? the vast majority of the time someone releases a software package it comes with a unix-like-only build system. nobody bothers supporting windows unless they have a very specific reason.windows is something I only ever run into when I have to interact with roastie corpo drones using their office bloatware. and solidworks. everything else about actually using a computer to process data, communicate or control things never requires it.
>>108781600>the average joeis completely irrelevant. the average joes of the world use 0.00001% of the software that is out there.
>>108781856Don’t engage with this time-vampire.
>>108781867yet they use windows and will never ever switch because for 99% if it works they wont bother changing it iv got people on windows 7 who refuse to upgrade. but yeah sorry
>>108781856are you fucking retarded?
>>108780161Name the features that windows desktop has that fedora kde or arch dont/cant have. Il wait
>>108779588after dirty frag i don't know if secure is really in the place to say.
>>108779588>freemacOS is also free when you but an Apple computer, so is Windows for most consumers>secureLinux isn't any safer than the competition.>efficientIt's not efficient, it's extremely unreliable - time wasted on fixing its issues (that don't exist in other OSes) is literally what inefficiency is.
>>108779852That is exactly what's coming btw and it won't be the linutopia you think. It'll be immutable, containerized, android-like. They'll be mostly based on the atomic fedora, think bazzite or aurora but, yes, HPozzite, Lenovorrhea, Dull Linux, ASUSyphilis
>>108779588>If Linux is free, secure, and efficient, why does most software get developed for Windows only? Why is Windows more popular?cause linux sucks for gaming
>>108781910Working out of the box remote desktop with adapting scaling to the client resolution.
>>108779588windows is one thing, once you develop something for windows you can reasonable assume it will work on all pc with the same major windows versionlinux is an endless sea of fragmented solutions that never agreed on anything ebsides calling themselves linux, whatever you develop is very unlikely to work anywhere elsethink of it like consoles vs pc, pc (linux) are always the better option but the majority of games are made console (windows) first or only because who makes them cannot be assed to troubleshoot all possible pc configurations, meanwhile a game made for ps4 will work on all ps4s
>>108781910>Stable API>Proper font rendering.>Device manager>Multi-window positioning that works (a Wayland issue).
>>108779588Because it is unknown like in the image
>>108781946>noo you cant just change the resolution scaling it has to be automatic becauase... it just does okEven your hyper specific niche use case is solvable lol. Out of the box is not an argument. Its being lazy and not knowing how your hardware/software works. Just say you want your OS to tardwrangle you and everyone you work with if thats what kind of feature you actually mean
>>108781967>>Stable API>windowsthis is bait right>>Multi-window positioning that worksok so you're just a literal retard
Windows was GUI first thats why it became dominant for home and office use. Linux was CLI first and GUI came later thats why its more dominant on the server.
>>108781980Retard
You cannot have a technical discussion with linux cultists, they don’t even understand the system they ‘love’.
>>108782011>thats why its more dominant on the serverIt dominated servers because it was free to use. Every other alternative needed a license, which is very expensive if you want to run a data centre.
>>108782021Yes, you are the retard who needs to be tard wrangled anon
>>108782050Completely forgot about that my bad anon,
>>108782098It’s just too bad that Sun Microsystems were so short sighted there, but it was all against them. They had custom hardware, even processors (SPARC) which ran on their own Solaris OS; it was all expensive. Whereas you could run Linux on almost anything and not pay. Those dynamics won despite linux having a much weaker networking stack, it was thanks to IBM and others that it became very good.
>>108782156I agree, Sun Microsystems would have been as big as Nvidia lol
>>108781910Everything is just nicer under windows. With something like Task Manager it'll show GPU usage. On GNOME they didn't implement/removed the feature. KDEs shows a GPU widget that doesn't work. The new rust tool that Ubuntu is using does work.>Just use nvtopOk, but that's not nicer than Windows. The God tier setup these days is to tune Windows 11 yourself, and run whatever linux cli tools you need in WSL. I even use WSL for a GUI program for performance reasons.
>>108779588It works on my machine and does what i want it to do better than Windows.Popularity contests don't actually matter
>>108779588>secureIt's not as secure
>>108782006The most stable API in the linux world is win32.
>>108783503The most stable api in the linux world is x11 (xlib)
>>108783517Yeah well that’s dead now, so….
