Fields Medal winning mathematician Timothy Gowers used GPT5.5 Pro to solve open problems, believes mathematical research will face a 'crisis' very soon with current rate of progress

A Fields medalist can be a top genius at some niche maths, and a absolute dunce at everything else.
This is like taking Dawkins impression of "Claudia" as a serious proff that AI are conscious.
>>
>>108783418
What people don't realize is that results someone gets from muh AI often depends on their own knowledge and skill level. That guy knew what to ask and knew how to focus on what they recognized as right in the LLMs answer.

If someone is skilled enough, they don't even need an LLM to surface answers, they can just go on an automatic writing spree a text editor and sooner or later they'll be gobsmacked at some thing they had never consciously thought of before appeared on screen, but they're the one that typed it.

It's a dumb phenomenon.

>>108783787
you can still use your own competence to stop and redirect the LLM to arrive at the correct solution faster and avoiding long, expensive dead ends, but it still does 99% of the work itself and could usually have arrived at the answer itself (just at the cost of more tokens).

I have to catch claude every now and then when it is about to make a stupid mistake, usually due to some missing contextual knowledge I didn't provide but occasionally when it genuinely fucks up and makes wrong assumptions. but I could also just spend more money on compute to get the same result with no intellectual input

I wonder whether it’s any good at algebraic geometry. I suspect it’s likely far far better at combinatorics than algeo. I’m sure that’ll change over time, but it’s still depressing in the sense that this used to be a field that anyone could do, but if LLMs are going to become needed for mathematics, it basically turns this into a pay-to-win game when it used to be the fairest field we had.

There’s going to be a serious crisis if we don’t figure out what to do about young people. If this outputs the work of a young mathematician more easily than it would be to train a PhD candidate then what happens when all the old guard are no longer around but we’ve not built up mathematicians strong enough to replace them? The current way of focusing on profit risks us winding up in a position where we might actually begin destroying our own ability to do mathematics. Loss of institutional knowledge is a serious risk none of the people in charge care about because there are shekels to be made.

>>
>>108785057
>How do they perform?
First, I have to say that I don't do full-on Langlands-style AG or stuff like that, my work borders computational algebra and logic so there is bias in that sense. But they perform well for what I ask thep to do, that is, brainstorming, finding approaches and sometimes completing proofs for which I already have somewhat worked out an outline. They can't solve my subject from one vague prompt yet sadly (or not?) but anytime I have sufficient work behind the prompt they do very well which sometimes doesn't require much, so for proving otherwise menial lemmas etc. they're pretty great. If progress continues as it has done I also do fear that I'll just become a prompt monkey orienting it with my human intuition and doing jack shit in the actual thinking part of the work.

I mean, isn't this just a slight shift of focus to finding and formalizing those questions and then investigating the answers the AI gives?
That's something that still requires a deep understanding of the subject. It's not like some average person could just randomly come up with a question about combinatorics or functional analytics.

>AIs outperforming the vast majority of humans in intellectual fields

What do they expect? That we abandon all jobs that have a minimum of dignity - white-collar jobs - to work breaking rocks in mines?
It seems that all professions that pay relatively above average are about to be replaced in the coming years, while manual and dangerous jobs continue to be done by flesh-and-blood humans.
Either the West puts in place a genuinely nationalist government to curb these companies, or we will have to start killing CEOs and presidents.
It is possible to change, China is even at least trying, while the West will drown with a mass of 80% obsolete unemployed people: https://fortune.com/2026/05/03/chinese-court-layoffs-workers-ai-replacement-labor-market/

>That we abandon all jobs that have a minimum of dignity - white-collar jobs - to work breaking rocks in mines?
If white collar "work" can be so easily automated with algorithmic sleight of hand, it was never really "work" to begin with.
I got into construction after chatgpt blew up in like what 2022?
Most white collar work will be destroyed in the coming years. Either get out now into the trades or into something white collar in construction and you can forestall the inevitable.
As for me, I project manage construction workers. AI isn't going to manage tradies at all when they're mostly lying retards. And don't get me wrong they will try and it will be stupid costly to a GC that tries when tradies do trady shit.

Nigga you must be really dumb if you think there's going to be all this demand for construction in a world where practically everyone is unemployed and survives on government handouts to eat. In such a situation, nobody will be building shopping malls because nobody will be able to afford to go, nobody will be building office buildings because there won't be any employees, nobody will be building football stadiums because nobody will have the money to watch a game, no government will pay for a new bridge/road if nobody works or pays taxes anymore.
It will basically be modernized slavery, where you will sell your dignity and privacy in exchange for UBI (oatmeal, potatoes and basedbeans).
>If white collar "work" can be so easily automated with algorithmic sleight of hand, it was never really "work" to begin with
Then tell me what is your definition of work. I suspect that 99% of people are completely useless from your point of view. Not just the HR bitch with the colored hair, but also the farmer who plants potatoes and was replaced by a combine harvester, the policeman who would be replaced by cameras, drones and robots, the doctors who would be replaced by robotic arms operated remotely by pajeets, etc.

>>LLMs can do months of PhD-level work in an afternoon
>This is a crisis if these people who've spend 8+ years studying plan to ever get work.

No it isn't. This is like the advent of computers. Rather than wasting months of time per individual mathematician with computations, conjectures to nowhere etc, you can now have one mathematician running tons of concurrent cases in an afternoon. Its going to speed up and change the nature of mathematics research, but it will not end it. This is absolutely nothing but a positive for mathematicians. Remember, an AI cannot understand things for you.
