What's the best use cases for an old 2011 laptop?

My T61 is currently a dedicated IRC and notification machine. Also runs youtube-dlp every 24 hours. It has like 140 days of uptime and has failed like once and it was the original charger that died.19 years and still going...

>>108783792Mint XFCE.

>>108783540I would dig through the hard drive to see if there's any old porno that I dled back then and forgot about
>>108783840It mostly downloads from a list of youtube channels to a NAS for me to watch them because youtube subscription tab is fucked and wont show new videos.
>>108783619Same. Bless this T420.

>>108783540i use my t420 to study at the library, it works well idk how 6 tabs on firefox and a pdf open on zathura consumes only 2gb of ram on that thing, but it doesi have 8gb and i dont remember the last time i used swap, it works really well
>>108783540Posting from bed is all I ever use mine for
>>108783540I used to be able to play WoW at 60fps on my x230 years ago @ low settings on Linux but now games don't even boot, I also have issues with hardware decoding videos that I never used to get. I'm sure there are solutions to these things but it's very frustrating

>>108784269https://github.com/CachyOS/proton-cachyosuse environment variable PROTON_DXVK_SAREK=1
>>108784315thank you ill try it on warmane. I also found out some stuff about the hardware decoding apparently the last release of libva-intel-driver doesnt have a specific fix for wayland that was commited but never built so all the packages for it are broken, and libva broke wayland support since 2.22 and you need to downgrade that also to 2.21. all aids but at least I can fix it.
>>108784355you can also use dxvk-sarek with vanilla wine if you don't like proton
>>108784417but vulkan perf is disappointing at best on ivy because certain hardware features are emulated I guess
>>108783587Not so good for it. Old Intel iGPU can't accelerate 4k or encoding/decoding AV1/h265.
>>108783587>Turn it into a home media streaming serverUse it as a samba server
I used to use a Thinkpad 420 for work, at least until the end of 2022 when I migrated over to my M1 Macbook Air.Mostly did "office tasks." Email. Web. Minor graphic work with Inkscape. Ran fine. Don't recall moments of sluggishness. I imagine it would handle fine today had I not switched.I think I ran Ubuntu Mate on it.
>>108784514the stock i5-2540M in the t420 is 3 times faster than my current main laptopyou really dont need much computer to do basic tasks like browsing the web or watching youtube videos

>>108783540>t420upgrade its cpu to the 4-core version, it'll make it almost as fast as a t480 and with surprisingly small battery life penalty.
>>108783540I run a t430 completely offline as a direct interface with my 3d printers. Files are safe as theres no weefee card and webcam/speaker in it. Its fun to play around with.
my shitty nu-intel t14 is catching fire. has 32 gigs too. i want to break it so bad

>>108786985I need to play gamesnot even new games, but games that came out in 2007
>>108783540My daily driver is a thinkpad x220 tablet, so basically everything. Slap a light linux distro on an SSD, throw in some more ram, you've got a desert island laptop right there.
Drill a hole through the center of the bottom chassis.Go to a coffee shop. Put your dick in it and close the lid so no one can see your dick.Wait for an Indian guy to enter the coffee shop. Get his attention by asking him if he can debug your Java. When he walks over, open the lid and show him your dick. When he is disturbed, tell him you have +1 Izzat
>>108783674I fucking love hydrus but I spend all my time going down an autistic rabbit hole of trying to make my tags consistent across boorus that have slight differences in how they'd describe Spyro the Dragon shitting into a Subway sandwich bun.
>>108783540You can still do a lot on old hardware. I'm in the process or reviving an old laptop of mine from 2014, 4GB of RAM and all. Of course new video games aren't viable, but anything more retro, internet browsing, most software in general... it works. Thinking of going with Lubuntu ou Ubuntu MATE to have a lightweight DE, while still having many software options.
>>108787647>You can still do a lot on old hardwareYou can but why would you when a 5 year old laptop in decent condition is like $200
This was the noblest ThinkPad of them all.All the slim ultrabooks save only heDid that they did in envy of great keyboards; He only, in a general honest buildAnd common good to all who typed in fury,Made one of them. His life was gentle, and the elementsSo mix’d in him — magnesium frame, classic TrackPoint, legendary keyboard, and that glorious red dot —That Nature might stand upAnd say to all the world, “This was a ThinkPad!”

>>108787832Well the average laptop dies after 5 years so its not a surprise.
>>108786052there was no need to make me feel old again
>>108783540I keep my x220 in the kitchen and look up stuff while i make food. It's also a useful backup being something like 6th string on the bench. Still works fine for web browsing and scripting
>>108784044it seems the 2011 keyboard came in handy at least
>>108783540Using them 10 years ago.I remember grabbing an X220 in 2017 to use for my university work and it was dogshit slow then. I can't imagine now.best laptop keyboard I've ever typed on though. bashed out many essays on mine. The one in my Legion 7 I'm typing this on is fucking terrible so Lenovo definitely lost it.

>>108787832you can only pick from the living
>>108788209only if you don't care about speed or battery life and have a deep, almost erotic appreciation for the old thinkpad look
>>108783540Not quite 2011 but I still use my Toshiba Satellite E45t daily to watch youtube and browse 4cuck and do some programming or cooming. It runs Debian like a dream. It's crazy how much extra life you can get out of an old laptopt with Linux.
Is XFCE wayland stable yet and does it require xwayland? I wanna use it on my thinkpad, I'm using a tiling wm right now which is fine but it's a little finicky when I want to use it's dock. I also don't like using a tiling wm without a trackpoint on my keyboard. I don't wanna use x11/xlibre because I don't like it I find just being able to run the wm by typing its name and not worrying about compositors and shit like that very convenient
>>108783540distraction free writing device > no internet> no gui> boots straight into a text editor of your choice
>>108783540Is this a T420? As long as you max out the RAM, which is fairly inexpensive to do, it's not a bad computer - just heavy and the battery doesn't last a long time.I have one like that that I leave plugged in. I used to use it all the time, but have since bought a much lighter, more modern thinkpad for daily use. The clunky 2011 thinkpad handles recurring or long-running tasks, since it's always on.
>>108783540I use an x200 to sync my files with syncthing. It has an ethernet port so its perfectI also have an X520 which has a good cpu, its even replacable to a very good one, and the expresscard slot could be used for gpu passthrough for the exp gdc. it would be great for gaming
