Have been looking for a job post-university for 4 months. Suddenly, I got an offer after so long, 60k, declined it, and then got another one by Wednesday for 110k. Do I take this one or keep trying my luck? Currently working as a cashier.
>>
>>108788762
110k is literally below poverty line so turn that shit down

if you think you can get a better offer then take the 110k, keep applying to jobs, and keep this one off your resume.
you probably wont get a better offer unless you're fagman material.

Is the surplus of junior pm roles because they plan to replace them ai in perspective ?

Imo if there will be less programmers due to the agentic programming then pms are 1st on the cutting block, compared to other managerjal jobs. Besides pms are basically janitors of management.

Focus on getting tasks done, not watching the clock. You're stuck there no matter what, so there's nothing else to be doing with yourself except for getting as much done as possible. The day will go faster, you'll relax better when 5pm does roll around, and long term you'll perform better plus grow your skills.
Once you start eying the clock, thinking "only X more hours to go!" time and productivity plummets. You're there, you have to be there, so there's no benefit to doing anything but work.
>>
>>108793582
most people in the cybersec are just pretending to know shit, even in the "offensive" side.
but you'd have to be a tech god to know everything in tech. do you, as a sysadmin, know how to program in C++?
>>
>>108794997
>anyone been using local llms for their paid job?
Yes.
Very few of my code projects are sensitive. 90% of it's wordpress. Things that do involve sensitive stuff, I just vibecode the shape of whatever it is without entering the data. So I use chatGPT for 99% of coding so far.
But..
Company is trying to catch the wave on AI.
- had me experiementing with openclaw throughout Feb/March
- In April got a mac studio 512gb ram, testing various local LLMs on it (largest run so far was a q2 of kimi 2.5 and qwen3.5 379b). Best performance/speed balance from an eyeball view so far have been Qwen3.5 122b and gemma4 31b).
- After testing models, eyeballing their knowledge on our industry out of the box, I played with having the openclaws use that instead of API keys for clould LLMs.
- Moved onto developing industry related RAG systems. Still haven't tried Karpathy's wiki thing with Obsidian, just been setting up RAGs. Did it for one subject and was able to drastically improve test scores on something. But got pulled from that to rush out a different project.
Haven't been using the local models for coding much. Probably should, but deadlines are tight and nothing I'm coding involves sensitive material that can't be discussed with a cloud model.
Haven't tried qwen3.6 yet, should probably download that tonight, heard good things. But I mostly moved on from downloading and trying every single model that comes out. I still have to get my hands dirty with Hermes. There's way too much shit coming out to keep on top of everything, and as the tech guy, I'm kind of having everything thrown at me and told to learn it all at once.

I've had the best luck with qwen2.6-27b using the mtp branch for llama.cpp. I get like 15tokens per second on strix halo, without it it's more like 7tokens which sucks. That being said it's about 80% as good as opus for me, except I don't have to try to minmax and strategize how I will use my tokens with it. Ask it to theorize about a bug, go walk the dog for 10min, come back and 80% of the work is done. Shit is great.

>university graduate does not understand how "a career" works and wants a jump from a fresh grad cashier job to 300k IT job
how is it possible to graduate in 2025 with this mindset
what the fuck is happening in US universities, I thought they were famously well connected to businesses, this is just delusional
>>
>>108795313
300k is not even enough to live on. And minimum wage should be at least 15$/hour.
>>
>>108795313
klarna, mostly

this is my unironic belief. access to credit is greater than ever, so even if you write off star worship and people thinking they can make bank on betting and so on, lifestyle inflation is out of control and has been for like 50 years so everyone expects that when they "make it" they will not need to go into debt to maintain what they perceive as a "basic" lifestyle. but that "basic" lifestyle includes personal limos for burritos and several limited edition funko pops per month. but that lifestyle is very expensive and has tons of recurring costs and little investment into personal effects (i.e. instead of someone hobby equipment to carve or cast to fill their house with kitschy trash as humanity has done since forever, but only at the cost of initial tools and low cost of continued tooling, they buy thousands of funko pops)

im being a little facetious about that but it really is the idea that stuff costs way too much because there are so many intermediaries, and most of those intermediaries are basically just loan sharks who instead of shooting you in the knees when you don't pay, just beg their local anglophone gubberment or "angel investors" for a bailout once default rates rise.

>>
>>108795422
klarna has a near 0% "delinqency rate" because the initial "loan" is not actually formally a loan, and those clients who truly can't pay even after missing a payment are not "deliquent" on a "loan" they simply owe money to a company for a purchase.

That's fucking nothing though. Look up average SWE salaries. Look up how much one egg costs. (((THEY))) lied to us and are keeping us in SLAVERY to prop up DEI hires and nigger "communities" by underpaying SWEs and funneling that money to underqualified minorities.

Copy a layer to a temporary vector and then copy it back to the matrix using modular arithmetic to control the circular behavior (and you could do it in place, but that would be even more annoying)

getting sizes right if there is no flag per entry of which layer it belongs to would require some thought to avoid posible edge cases, but all in all it just an annoyance rather than any great difficulty

You just need a few variables for storing direction, position, storage for the swaps, dimensions of the current grid, and iterators. The outer loop would iterate over the dimensions of each layer. The inner loop would iterate over the perimeter of each layer while the current cell with its neighbor cell along the way. You would start at 0, 0 and downward direction 0, -1. Based on current direction, you can tell which side of the rectangle you're on, so once you've reached the grid height distance, you would change to 1, 0. Once you've reached grid width distance, you would change to 0, -1. Once you've reached grid height distance again, you would change to -1, 0. Once you're back in the original position, you break. Then you're back to the outer loop. You shrink the grid before repeating the inner loop. You repeat the process until the grid can't be shrunk further.

Is that supposed to be hard? Surely anyone can whip out a shitty solution pretty quick. You don't have to have some epic clever super efficient solution for everything right away, just shit out something that works first and maybe the clever solution will come to you, maybe it won't, but you at least have something that works. In the real world this is often good enough and not even close to where the main performance bottlenecks of whatever you are working on are. If you do need better performance for something you can do analysis on your software and find where it is worth spending some time coming up with something clever.

you ever saw people working in administration, call center, marketing, sales, general affairs got a layoff? why is it always tech? developers, programmers, QA, data, technical writer, nothing is safe.
>>
let's say you are non-officially told that you will (and maybe your team) be laid off in, say 2-4 months, and you've confirmed this with multiple other people. what would you do to take advantage of your situation? would you take some kind of insurance? ask for a loan?
>>
>>108797503
>why is it always tech?

Because bad vetting processes let a lot of bad workers into the industry. These workers get to coast along due to middle management enabling them. When AI happened, the dead weights all got exposed in an emperor has no clothes moment, giving companies a plausible excuse to fire them all.
>>
What are you supposed to talk about when the recruiter asked about the gap in your resume? I usually answer with "im keeping up with technologies and practicing the necessary skills for this line of work" seems like that doesn't enough. Seems like i should just make up a lie like "im taking care of a family shop at home"
>>
>>108797590
Even before AI it's always mostly happened to tech

>would you take some kind of insurance? ask for a loan?
What for? If you can get a new job in 2-4 months by applying RIGHT NOW it wouldn't be such a big deal
>>
>>108797613

At that point, you just need a response that signals you weren't in jail AND you're being honest about it. Everything else is basically outside of your control. Saying you been studying the latest tech or whatever probably sounds like a blatant lie to HR. Once you clear phone interview with HR, then nobody's even going to notice or care about a resume gap.

whereas before i for example had access to everything, did everything, network, vmware, service desk, tickets
now i'm put in a "service desk analyst" role where supposedly i'm just on the phone, work on tickets and do menial 1st level tasks

no access to servers, no network access, nothing that has helped me troubleshoot and solve so many problems in the past

on the flip side this analyst job it seems is something i could do 100% wfh
should i do it, chill for the foreseeable future, or do i switch jobs entirely?
i know i'll get extremely bored of just 1st level shit but 100% wfh for a mediocre pay would be comfy

Everyone not working for FAGMAN basically.

It isn't impressive that you make 350k if your home loan costs you 6K a month, and your state taxes the shit out of you, etc, etc etc.

I know this is fictional bait. But I couldn't resist pulling my pants down, just in case you are an actual human and also as retarded as one can come.

Take the 110k job. Take even a 65k job. Industry experience is what you need to become desirable for future employers.

About the money, read this:
https://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2012/01/13/the-shockingly-simple-math-behind-early-retirement/

You don't need 300k to buy a house, but houses are definitely harder to obtain than they were pre covid, so I understand the pain. Look into house hacking and read "Set for Life" by Scott Trench. The big takeaway is that most Americans blow their income on high fixed expenses: housing, transportation, food.

10 years ago I was waiting at the airport to take a flight using r/random. I stumbled upon a subreddit that was something like "7 figure club". I was so naive that I didn't even understand what it was. Then I saw a "how can I get to two commas" thread and opened it. I realized at that point 7 figures meant 1 mil. The people in the thread linked to Mr. Money Mustache. I read it all.

10 years later I'm over 1 mil invested (plus a house, but I had literally closed on the house a month before finding MMM which wiped all my savings). I was making about 89k at the time (up from 55k my first year, 65k after my first year's raise, having just gotten a promotion in my third year).

Over the past 10 years my income has steadily raised to 200k, but it was steady.

Your eventual net worth is mostly about how well you can save and invest.

I'm way behind real tech workers. I have a friend that just got an offer at Google for 650TC, but he's a seasoned product manager so not quite comparable to my mid data scientist self. But he also spends wildly and has effectively no retirement savings.

At 1 mil, I expect 70k in market returns per year. So now my income is 200k plus 70k (but that 70k isn't taxed). So long as I can keep saving, even modestly at this point, I'll be fine.

Struggling? Where exactly?

I've been feeling like shit for the past few years but I think I made a break through recently where I feel the happiest when I actually try to make the best out of things. It's working on a lot of things like I'm more social and happier for it and I stopped caring about reserving myself or pretending to be somewhat I'm not. However, work seems to be a huge problem I'm still trying to resolve. I no longer care for the technology (I actively hate the tools we use and the incompetent company that made it), I hate the environment I'm in, not a big fan of my coworkers, and just actively shutting down during work hours is messing with my mental. Feels like I'm in prison for 8 hours a day (prison would honestly be more relaxing imo. Too much fire fixing). I get I probably have to move out and I've been applying (no bites since my work is very specific) but while I'm here, I don't know what to do during my workday anymore. I don't like any of my projects and they're actively pissing me off.

>coworkers are nice until there's even a slightest reason to disagree or you fail to answer their 5pm call for help within 2 minutes.
I will never ever drink the "us poor workers vs evil managers" coolaid, or anything in wibe of family and friends. It's me and my monthly payment. These people are shameless.

Hey /g/! So since tech isn't something you can get into and the idea of entering the field to get a job is a pipe dream, I'm curious how I can steadily learn about it over time, properly, and what in particular I should know about, to even possibly concieve of being capable of any kind of related jobs, since, I'm an absolute plebian who knows nothing, yet is somewhat fascinated by it. I would figure, that people who work in this field would of course, know how to anser this question best. Tech seems like a way of life rather than a goal but it irriatates me massively not knowing how the thing I use every day works.
>>
>>108799322
Don't. Do anything else. Not saying it for my sake but this field is a soul sucking viper and it will take every bit of you that it can muster.

>>
>>108799330
I just wish I could possibly conceive of the bare munimum, or at least see some interesting things to further cultivate an interest so I can better decide if that sort of thing is the field for me, at least. I certainly don't think something like manual labor is the thing for me, and I certainly don't find the prospect of jobs that involve socializing outside of practicality appealing.

Does it take a massive amount of understanding to even begin with this kind of thing? Is it a bet you have to make from the start? I just want something. My incredibly vague and nebulous notion of this kind of thing leads me to being interested but I know it can't be what it used to be. I probably just have the curse of a zoomer flesh prison.
>>
>>108799371
Tech is broad. What do you want to build?

You're perfectly correct. It must be something in the "Wayer" here.

Websites, an operating system (I know how that probably sounds), a game engine. Hacking is also interesting, and I want to know how things relate to an operating system, and how programs relate to hardware. I know this also is pretty vague. I wouldn't mind just diving right into books if I'll acutally learn and be able to apply something. Bottom line, it looks autistic and I like autistic things.

Anyone here actually work at executive/c suite level? I know we always meme they do fucking nothing but I always wonder what it's like up there. I can't really find anything online since obviously people going to huff up their farts since if you're up there you gotta be egosistical as fuck but I wonder if it's sunshine and rainbows and they're painting rainy clouds or if it's rainy clouds and people think it's just sunshine and rainbows.

These are hyper specific to your situation, plus speakers always present their pov. That translates to "you did the right thing" head patting or reddit tier "divorce/quit job/call them stupid" type of advice.

And for job looking, everyone is in the same boat, so they are the category of blaming everyone if they're Americans, or blaming white women if they're jeets.

I'm trying to hire a ui/ux person from upwork for maybe 60-70 hours of work. Everyones portfolio looks the same. $40 per hour or $20 per hour it all looks the same to me as a layman. I'm hesitant to hire certain demographics but if they have 200k earned and near perfect feedback how is it possible that they're bad? A $35 ukranian can't be that much better?

PMs just spout rhetoric to validate their existence within the company.

"My job is important! I love relaying messages between people so you shouldn't fire me! Cus if I don't exist then the C suite staff will have to talk to *gasp* engineers!"

They're disgusting and sycophantics creatures who exist to please the company structure just so they can buy houses and experience home ownership stress. And it will be stressful cus they're fat, have no real hobbies, and can't even secure respect from me so how can their "partner"s respect them

They are are a hybrid of go go go dorks, serious hat wearers, and small penis energy converyers
