I just emailed several chink mini PC brands to make something like picrel.
>>
what's so interesting about a form factor to warrant continuous discussion in a general?
>>
>>108792552
Mini PCs are cool and useful sometimes
>>
How is daily driving a RPi5?
>>
>>108792552
It's not just a form factor. Mini PCs are like laptops without the keyboard or screen, so you get great value / budget outside of gaming.
>>
Best set up for cooling?
>>
I've been thinking getting a GMKtec EVO-X2 (128GB) to play around with local models.
Is it a worthwhile investment, or are there some better machines out there?

the ai max is neat for gaming on low power, but the ai max is around half the performance of a 3090, which if you don't mind being low on 16gb of vram the 5070 TI would match (AKA 2x the tokens per second, technically the 5070 TI would get more than 200 tokens per second because it can't fit the larger models, a 3090 would normally run 30tps but most people want 2 3090's so they get 15tps, so from my memory the AI max would run at around 5tps~ at 48gb, but speeds will be higher with a MoE model).
And that's for LLM's, for image / etc, the AI max really struggles at that.
I would suggest renting gpu's on the cloud to get a taste of what the performance would be like. I'm a vramlet and I started off with google colab to try out 16gb models for short sessions. You can pivot into vast.ai (and I think you can use the same colab script but it's highly technical, and if you end up renting 128gb GPU setups, you can easily rake up $200 in a single day if you forget to turn off the VM, since it's not priced on usage).
But local is a lot more easier to setup than renting. I just don't think it's worth $2000+ (and buying 2x 5070 TI's or 9070's for 32gb would be a lot faster for gaming and AI, if you had the case to hold them, but a 5090 might not be cost effective but it would be better for gaming since it combines the power, and you have to option to buy another 5090 later, which will be the minimum spec required for DLSS 6).
I also remember there was a planned nvidia ARM laptop that might game a little bit unlike the DGX spark which has zero gaming potential?
>>

>half the performance of a 3090
actually I think it's more like a quarter, just check the benchmarks for yourself, maybe you could rent an AI max I dunno.

I'm waiting
>>
>>108793632
that is until they break in 2-3 years and you can't reuse the shit sodimm, soldered chip, etc
desktops are the pragmatic choice over long term, unless you're using it as emulation box or htpc
>>
>>108795090
You're thinking of SoC devices like the Raspberry Pi. These mini PCs use standard CPUs, RAM modules, etc with small motherboards.
>>
>>108795242
you mean arm vs x86. and anon is right, mini pcs have soldered cpu, not socketed, laptop ram form factor, and overall low power specs, limited tdp with shit cooling
unless you really need something small to fit in some place there's no reason to pay extra for the small form factor, just get a sh oem pc for way cheaper. more connectivity, better cooling, more power, proper power supply

I always use a mouse with laptops because touchpads suck.
With mini PCs, the keyboard and the monitor are not tied to the device so you can use your custom monitor or keyboard.
All laptop keyboard suck while nowadays you can't get a decent laptop with screen smaller than 14". Mini PCs aren't constrained by those. If either of those breaks, you don't need to buy a new laptop either.
Mini PCs have decent ports while nowadays laptops having an ethernet port are seen as too generous.
>portability
95% of the time I was using my laptop was when I was near a power source, so batteries are useless and they are prone to break anyway.
For a slight inconvenience when moving you don't need to hassle with batteries ever.
>>
>>108794462
How much are you paying for it?
>>
>>108792552
idk I just like how after buying a mini pc I could for the first time have my own functional stream server and hoard as many movies as my lifetime permits
so in a sense its like my mini pc is a essential part of my infinity media library that won't ever go away. I always had that dream when I learned for the first time that netflix could delete content

Unless you're using GPIO or CEC, Raspberry Pis are a terrible value. You can get far more performance for the same money from a NUC.
>>
>>108796830
What do you do with it?

>>108795090
>that is until they break in 2-3 years
By that time, even a full tower desktop is going to be obsolete anyway.

Why do you think that be likely to happen?
>>108798584
Why exactly?
>>
>>108796827
I see. I use mine not as the server, but as a chromecast substitute but with linux so it can do other useful stuff. I haven't developed a sentimel attachment to the machine or formfactor but can see it happening if it enabled a project that sat in the pipeline for a long time.
>>108796805
so you move enough for a full desktop to be an inconvenience while moving a mini pc plus its peripherals is acceptable?
I agree with your reasoning and share many constraints but I settled for minimizing computing at any place other than my desktop tower, because I'd rather have full comfort 90% of the time than 90% comfort 100% of the time, if you get what I mean, but I'm definitely a poweruser
