>devs hit UI perfection with Aero, XMB and GNOME 2
>it gets replaced with Metro, Dynamic Menu and GNOME 3
why can't we just go back to the past?

Aero as in Aero theme for Win7 (and Vista I guess), retard
It's literally more consistent than Metro, despite the fact that Metro is FUCKING FLAT

XMB is the UI equivalent of arranging the keyboard keys in alphabetical order.
>>
>>108792372
>UI perfection with Aero,
fisher price xp theme was the absolute peak, but its generational. old cunts will prefer 98 gray style i suppose which also isn't dreadful.
w7 is decent but just not as consistent
>>
>>108792435
idk it just werked
dynamic menu on PS4 might be theoretically better (as main panel is reserved for just for applications), but XMB's "unified" design where everything is part of some category of the panel just makes more sense to me
>>
>>108792372
I don't get why people shit themselves over XMB so badly.
>>

>but its generational. old cunts will prefer 98 gray style i suppose which also isn't dreadful.
I'm a zoom-zoom and personally prefer Win Classic/95 and Aero over XP's Luna
Win95 looks "serious", Aero looks "welcoming" and Luna is just a toy

xp was shit but only because microjew absolutely prevented you from changing any of it. it used to be that you installed xp iso hacks with different task bar colors and probably keyloggers in there at the time, but now most xp ui tweaks and mods for 11 and linux let you change the color and texture so its very usable now. this is why the boring gray ui from before gets so much love now. it wasn't just boring and gray, it could be anything. xp was the introduction of corporate ensloppification devoid of personality. i disabled it immediately. now with windblinds and start11 i use it every day.
>>
>>108792507
because it was good
also hacked PSPs were common, and all the fun CFW stuff worked with XMB quite well
>>
>>108792548
the zune theme (black/orange) suited me prefectly so the color scheme of xp never bothered me.
also i use computer to actually do stuff not to sit and look at the interface. physically it was very useable in extremem contrast to anything after w7

No. Just no.

I'm making an XMB launcher for X11. Unlike existing launchers it will hijack the compositor and control whatever process is launched for a more consistent experience.
>>
>>108793495

shouldn't it be easier with Gayland?
>>
I know for a fact that every jaded millennial fuck here bitching about the term "Frutiger Aero" didn't even have a word for this art style in 2004.
>>
>>108792372
Why are you letting corporations decide what UIs you look at? Firefox and GTK allow you to write your own CSS lmao. You are so gay.
>>
>>108793562
The worst revisionism is retards saying "we always just called it Aero". Not in fucking 2004 you didn't.
>>
I get pissed off at the change for changes sake. Mostly rooted in job security / purpose.
>Oh man we have this thing that looks nice and works perfectly but I'm employed as a designer so I have to justify my worth by changing it even though it doesn't need to be changed.
Like no dude just leave it alone. Or at least come up with a good system that is modular and themable so that people can use what they prefer instead of whatever shit you decide to force today.
The herculean effort of changing the corners to be round this year and square the next, forever.
>>
>>108792435
XMB is not perfectly practical, but is very intuitive. The fact that I was able to access anything with menus and submenus using a d-pad and 4 buttons is revolutionary and works.

I really thought desktop systems were going to adopt this the generation after the PS3 and they never did.

this is bait, isn't it?

it was annoying when previews had sound desu

Thank God.

>it was annoying when previews had sound desu
I agree for both video preview and audio preview, but contextually.
Which is why it's nice that you could disable it and get regular thumbnails.
User choice like that is something I appreciate instead of author's vision/intent.
You can imagine a desktop.ini system where this is determined on a per directory level while also having a system default fallback setting.
Like how Windows explorer can display files as a list of text or graphical thumbnails.
>>
>>108792435
No it's not. Sure there could have been a grid view or something but it was pretty much perfect, especially with dealing with multiple types of media.
>>
>>108793610
I think that's what anon means, it's intuitive but actually using it can get very tiresome.

Want to spitball about ways it could be better?
I think subdivision and jumping could help.
Like instead of being 1 big flat list you chunk up the content somehow, and maybe you could jump around or search by typing characters.
Like jumping to the J submenu by typing J.

I wonder if it could be good in a keyboard and mouse desktop environment.
I know the RetroArch people use a simillar design.

you'd need some way to handle multiple windows that doesn't try to be keyboard-driven autism

I love RetroArch for keeping XMB alive.
>>

Take me the fuck back. It was fun and professional at the same time, peak Windows UI.
>>
>>108793542
The nearly 20 year old unstable protocol that expects you to interact directly with the DRM and needs a compatibility layer to run normal apps? Heh, nah it will be certified for Xlibre.
A wayland mode might be added at some point in the future I'm just trying to get it working.
>>
I'm old enough I own a hacked PS3 and I can't fucking stand retroarch's UI and wish the whole project would die in a fire to free the cores.
I don't know what you guys like about it. It's endless fucking scrolling it's so fucking slow.
>>
>>108797136
The only alternative is Kodi which is way worse.
>>
>>108792372
For Footfag 2, you can. But you're insane if you think 2 is better than 3.

>>108792435
XMB is simple. It's only stumbling block is not having good organization.

Movies? In the movie tab.
Music? In the Music tab (along with apps like Spotify, Last.FM, etc.)
Games? in the Games tab.

If you use folders, it is basically a D-pad file-system.

It just needed subfolders and a way to "reverse" organization (A->Z/Z->A) for less scrolling/button presses.
>>
>>108796843
it blows mega chunks when I have to look through a list of 10k roms

There was a word. Skeumorphism. While it wasn't everything, it was a huge influence.

If it's called "Cross Media Bar", then Xbox is called the Crossbox.

wasn't it something like neuomorphic?

Why the fuck you have 10k roms? Store them on a seperate drive and keep the 15-20 you really like on hand with 5 or so new ones the interest you. Swap as necessary.
10k roms seems so unreasonable kek.
Im not saying dont have that many. But if youre going to dump them why dump them in a functional directory, its like have 20 years of unorganized 4chan memes in a single folder.
>>
>>108800472
I need every rom for every game ever made, you don't understand
>its like have 20 years of unorganized 4chan memes in a single folder.
they have unix timestamp filenames so they're organized by default
>>
The enshittification is societal and global. This UI/UX stuff is merely a reflection of that.

How so? When the PSP came out in 2004, did you call its GUI "Aero", years before Microsoft unveiled and trademarked Aero?

i don't understand why gaming consoles and smart tvs force you to type using the full qwerty keyboard when it's awful to hunt the letters one by one using a controller
