what should i use? i'm having problems with steam link on x11 (even though it should work perfectly) and idk if it's because i'm using fvwm3 or what. but then i hear x11 is better for steam/proton which is what i'm mainly interested in.
>>108793111What GPU and distro are you using?
>>108793142nvidia 2060 and arch
>>108793166X11. Nvidia 2060 isn't that good with Wayland. Since you're using Arch your best bet if you want to use Wayland is to try nvidia-open but you'll have some problems with power management. The future is moving to Wayland though so keep that in mind.
>>108793201i wonder what the issues are being caused by then? could it be that i'm using fvwm3 with only half a proper DE (only using some necessary xfce components). should i try switching to a full DE like KDE?
>>108793211I think it's worth trying KDE because it has all the necessary stuff needed by steam. If you were using Wayland it would be a portal problem but since you're not maybe a library missing or something.
>>108793225i know this isn't tech support but when i use steam link the screen is completely black except for the cursor on whatever i'm streaming to. the only way i've been able to get it to work is by running stream by "STEAM_USE_XCOMPOSITE=1 steam" directly from the terminal. also it WON'T run in xcomposite mode in any other way besides directly from the terminal. what a mess. haven't had any other issues with steam or proton so far.
>>108793111>X11>gets support since forever>Wayland>only gets support recentlygee I wonder which one
a ps5
>>108793278Steam is relatively conservative but it doesn't mean it doesn't work with Wayland. The real problem here is Nvidia is only now doing kernel opensource driver support and only for 5000 series and Valve assumes Linux users have AMD.As for OP problem it wouldn't surprise me it it were some library missing. If it's streaming the issue is problem libva missing or something. only looking at logs I would know.
X11 and fwwm3 are from unix, an outdated and obsolete architecture. Everyone is gaming with Wayland now.
>>108793111>steam linkuse xwaylandthank me later...
>>108793261I don't know what desktop environment you're using but you can set environment variables for your session or modify the launcher so it's seamless.
>>108793111XLibre. Always. Never listen to the Gayland shills.
>>108793111>x11dead and buried, the meme fork will go nowhere and still hasn't made any meaningful change one year later>waylandactively getting development, software is starting to be built specifically with it in mind
>>108793111If AMD then Wayland.Of Nvidia then X11.
>>108793111if you want to do actual work and have a decent monitor, waylandif you care about ricing your desktop with transflags on your stinkpad then x11
>>108794246>if you want to do actual worklike CAD? gayland doesn't allow windows to remember and set their position>inb4 use one specific gayland compositor that does*krashes*
>>108794045what does xlibre have over x11 anyway? im convinced its mostly politically obsessed people use it to fuel their prejudices (waaah dei waah geypipo waah trans like who really gives a shit like you gay trans or not)
>>108794444X11 is no longer maintained.
>>108794444 (checked)it was way faster than x11 in a vm, haven't checked it on bare metal yet
>>108794246what does this mean? my monitor is 144hz and i mainly use it to play games. not sure what you mean by work. i do also rice my desktop. is that impossible on wayland or something?
>>108793111>what should i use?the one with an actual future
>>108793111ideally you have both wayland and xlibre installed in case you wish to use either onethey don't take up much disk space
>>108794444nice quadsHowever, it's the opposite. XLibre exists because the people who maintain Xorg are treating it like legacy software in maintenance mode (and have said they want it to die). Currently XLibre is the only attempt to try and add new features to X11. Phoenix is a neat idea, but is a complete rewrite and is more about preserving the protocols not the way things work currently. The people who hate XLibre are people who are politically obsessed and see it as representing rightoids and can't understand that allowing chuds doesn't mean it's exclusively for chuds. Based on how you wrote your comment, it's pretty obvious you fall into the second camp and are pretending like you're not equally as obsessed with politics as the schizo chuds on here.

>>108795821Windows.
>>108793308that's not true. the open nvidia driver is for 2000 series and up. the proprietary one isn't even being updated anymore
>>108796243The 2000 nvidia driver may exist but it has issues with power management and that's important if you want performance. You're rolling the dice with pre 5000 series.
>>108793111>but then i hear x11 is better for steam/proton which is what i'm mainly interested in.It depends. If you have a nvidia gpu then xwayland comes with extra input latency. On amd/intel that is not the case. Other issues also only happen if you run proton in wayland native mode, which is not the default (wayland mode breaks steam overlay which is required for steam input to work). Proton uses xwayland by default which works fine.
>>108794444as much as they say it does, nothing. they perform the exact same and all XLibre does is shuffle around code, just like its lead maintainer has been doing for years back in X11 with 0 benefit. the ONE thing XLibre does is come with TearFree enabled, all the rest is code-shuffling and there are no benchmarks that show any difference in performance because it does jack shit.
>>108796823the so-called "code shuffling" (actual term: refactoring) has actual performance benefits
>>108797333I'm going to add that in my CV: pro code shuffler
>>108793111Older nvidia graphics card and proprietary driver has a problem with wayland
>>108793166>nvidia 2060 and archjust try wayland with nvidia proprietary driver
