>>108799612I wonder why car TVs weren't more popular. I used to have a handheld TV in the 90's that could pick up UHF and VHF. They could have easily shoved that in a car. Hell, just being able to pick up the audio of TV channels on the radio would have been better than nothing. Since you could listen to your show if you're not making it home in time.
>>108799881My BIL had a 90s camry that had a pop-out screen the previous owner installed. Can't remember if it did TV but it did play DVDs.I guess it's niche enough to not be a standard option but still enough demand for aftermarket products.
>>108799881At least as a kid I'd get carsick as hell looking at anything resembling a screen while in a driving car.
>>108801953that's why macOS has stuff against motion sickness built in.the dots move when you're in a car and prevent motion sicknesshttps://youtu.be/Mv8xcuPUWRo
>>108801953Yeah, but that didn't stop every minivan from including a DVD player. For some reason, they really didn't want to include UHF/VHF receivers. Maybe because the antenna would be unwieldy or some shit.
>>108802203looking for CRTsissy advice, if I go to some random sh local shop looking for a nice one, what are the chances I find something worthy? interested in something like similar to 1440p vertical res, whatever is thereabouts at 120hz. are these rare/unobtainium? wanna try new games on them as people are raving about the experience but don't wanna end up with some shit oneare there any specs to look for, or is it a case of finding one of 5 weird models which usually come up at $1000 on ebay half-working?
>>108802575>looking for CRTsissy advice, if I go to some random sh local shop looking for a nice one, what are the chances I find something worthy?Very low. You'll probably just find a bunch of 480i round screens from brands like Sharp. These are hard to give away honestly.>interested in something like similar to 1440p vertical res, whatever is thereabouts at 120hz.Some monitors had decent specs, but I don't remember anything past 60hz being common.>wanna try new games on them as people are raving about the experienceThese people are retarded. Do not listen to them.
>>108802600ah so ideally I look up all model numbers I see on them and check the specs on the spot.any online resource about particular models with resolution/refresh rate? like form an idea on what to at least visually look for? flat CRT tubes, or slightly curved ones also fine etc? so I don't waste my time with low res junk.I remember having an older architect neighbour in a previous place I stayed, and he did have some nice CRTs back in the day. might try to reach him, maybe still has one stashed away if I'm lucky
>>108802575>if I go to some random sh local shop looking for a nice one, what are the chances I find something worthyNear zero. Recycling centers in my country just trash CRTs because they're considered too hazardous. >interested in something like similar to 1440p vertical res, whatever is thereabouts at 120hz. are these rare/unobtainium? The fastest CRTs ever made at 1440p could only reach little over 90hz. But that same 1440p90hz CRT can do 1080p120hz, 768p160hz+, etc. But the biggest pro of CRTs is that their motion looks perfectly clear even at 60hz, refresh rate isn't anywhere near as important as it is on modern sample&hold monitors where motion blur is a function of refresh rate. >wanna try new games on them as people are raving about the experience but don't wanna end up with some shit onePC CRTs can be roughly split into 3 tiers by just their size. This is the most important metric. The khz number determines what resolutions and refresh rates you can run on it. Higher is better, usually correlates with screen size.17" are the typical low-res garbage you had as a kid. 70khz typical, 1024p60hz.21-22" are almost always professional monitors meant for CAD and such and support very high resolutions and refresh rates with incredible picture quality. 110-137khz typical, 1200p85hz to 1536p85hz.19" monitors are somewhere in between, but often just slightly nicer consumer units, but sometimes decent prosumer tubes too. 96khz typical, 1200p60hz. You're looking for a 21" CRT. But finding those is really rare these days. Try to find at least a 19". For modern games, prefer a Trinitron/Diamondtron (AG) over shadow masks (SM). So seek flat tubes, not bubble-curved. Barrel-curved AGs (picrel) are old and quite rare, but valuable.
>>108802792>So seek flat tubes, not bubble-curved.Oh and worth mentioning, not all flat tubes are AGs, eg most flat Samsung's use their own DynaFlat SM tech, "fake" flat tubes. They can be good too but they're still SM's. Countless other little weird exceptions exists too like LG's flatrons which are slotmasks of all things but whatever
>>108802352god there was NOTHING more beautiful than computers that were used almost entirely offlineand modem connections were far too slow to fuck up societyRIP the golden age
>>108802575>or is it a case of finding one of 5 weird models which usually come up at $1000 on ebay half-working?yesdon't even waste your time on 25 year old electronics that expensive unless you have at least some intention to try and fix them yourself if something goes wrongmost of those kinds of people know they have issues and just won't tell you and intentionally say vague things like 'haha sometimes x happens idk why lulz"unless you get lucky on your local marketplace your out of luck unless you want to waste absurd amounts of money on something that can just break for no reason at any timeit's at the point were non fw900 high specs are like 2x oled cost unless ur european and then maybe you can get lucky on some iiyama or diamondtron but even then probably not in 2026but don't feel like your missing out on anything, the majority of crt 'users' are fucking larping and don't even use them. I personally just use them for anime mostly because there isn't a single game worth playing anyways, and if there was your probably better off with oled unless it's some older lower res game (mostly)
>>108802575>interested in something like similar to 1440p vertical resif you're from the US, you will never ever find Sony-branded monitors, and the best rebrands you're going to find at any reasonable price are 1600x1200 tubes like the Dell P991/P992. If you really want a P1110 or IBM P275, they occasionally go on sale, but those usually go for a thousand bucks.
>>108799612why would even the lushest carsick box be considered comfy?the smell of leather would make it even worse
>>108799881CRTs in that type of environment have all manner of trouble. Once LCD screens became reliable and relatively inexpensive, backseat screens became very popular with the family crowd.
>>108804218When I played UT back in the day, my clan found a loop hole on a tournament site. The only way to win was to beat your opponent, there were no time limits. So we kept the score 1-1 on Face in ICTF. Then we camped the flag. This lasted for hours and hours, I subbed myself out because it was so tedious lmao Eventually we just capped and wonCan't imagine what the other team was feeling
>>108799881>Hell, just being able to pick up the audio of TV channels on the radio would have been better than nothing.I think there were some auto radios with this feature in the 1980s and 1990s.
>>108803955I wish Bram Cohen had invented BitTorrent earlier, like in 1995. I downloaded a 100 MB game demo over like half a day, but HTTP ranges weren’t widely supported and stuff got corrupted in transit and automatic fixing-up would have been super duper handy. ChatGPT says that Python first worked on Windows in February of 1994, so _theoretically_ it could have happened if he made BitTorrent at 18 or 19 rather than 25

>>108804820IDK, I just feel like dedicating an entire monitor to that is stupid.
