What's /g/'s thoughts of decentralized mesh networks such as Meshtastic and Meshcore? I've been messing around with LoRa devices recently and it reminds me a lot of how old IRC chatrooms used to be before normies got on the internet.

It'd be great in a favella or kowloon

It's similar because the barrier to entry is still relatively high. I clip a heltec to my backpack when I go for walks just to see if there's new devices in the area.
It's kinda doa from a practical standpoint because big cities have way too much congestion for meshtastic to be viable and meshcore doesn't have the coverage to trust a crowdsourced grid. I've been testing out meshtastic when I go camping with buddies but it's pretty hit or miss. Losing line of sight kills range to under a mile and packets drop too often to be considered a stable alternative to handheld radios.
I want to have location logging and asynchronous emergency contact capabilities so if you get the wind knocked out of you or break a leg eating shit on a dirt bike you can still get help. You don't need to talk, there's a log of your last known location and no one needs to sit by a radio just in case. Maybe a wismesh on a pole would get us more range but playing around with heltecs proves it's not enough.

I like reticulum more since it's agnostic to communication protocol used

Maybe you could place a solar device with a 1/2 wavelength antenna up on a pole by your base camp. I've got a stationary node on a second floor balcony and it can reach contacts through brick buildings ~1-2 miles away and through open air over 10 miles and I am still waiting on getting an upgraded antenna ordered.

I haven't heard of Reticulum before. In your opinion, what benefits does it hold over other mesh protocols?
>>
cool shit that will never ever ever work in practice because of the laws of physics o algo

It doesn't have to serve every person on earth, just individual communities.
>>
>>108801991
True, but it seems extremely niche to serve a community that's both a) local enough to be able to build a mesh network among themselves, b) distant enough that just directional wifi antennae won't be enough, and c) connected enough to actually want to chat over a separate network.

LoRa has a 2-15 km range, so it's only suited for a local community. It's meant to maintain connectivity between mobile devices as people move around in that community, so a directional antenna wouldn't work. So it's meant for something like a town. Or one group I know of, they run a commune with a bunch of residences, so mesh networks are a good fit when they want to keep things local and text, rather than walkie talkies.

Fortunately, stationary high nodes can help remediate the issue. I see it being ideal for enthusiest groups and friends who live near each other. I know that a properly placed node high up on a mountain can cover a large portion of a town on its own and reach for tens of miles if unobstructed.

How does it do with trees? Do you need antennas above them for it to reasonably work at any distance?

Retard would rather bet he runs into the .00000001% of people one earth who are into niche stuff like this, rather than just getting a better job to afford iPhone satellite features KEK

That's much better range than I'm getting. A wismesh mini on a 20ft pole and a better antenna would probably cover the 10 miles. I've had a wismesh tab open for months now debating on pulling the trigger. Gas is too expensive to go out anyway so I'm waiting until our next trip to get one.

I'm not betting anything I'm setting up my own network. I don't care if anyone else uses meshtastic although it would be cool to see.
>rather than just getting a better job to afford iPhone satellite features KEK
Sure, ask the dude bleeding from his skull to point his phone at a satellite and pair it so he can ask for help kek. At least bring up inReach if you want to avoid outing yourself as a normie faggot.

basically its stupid. when they take the internet down, what are you realistically going to share with some idiot over 1k/sec? the anarchist cookbook.txt?

The only reason I'm able to hit 10 moles is because my house is situated on a hill overlooking a large flat plain so anything out there is likely in line of sight. That being said, the connection is pretty weak that far out and I'm sure the other node out there must be a large antenna on a pole.

>>108802587
The usecaae for my area is that we often get a lot of power outages and severe weather so it's useful to have a fallback communication system when until the power comes back on.

Useless trash for larpers
