The differences in felt responsiveness and resource consumption between free desktop environments and (fully configured) window managers is greatly exaggerated. KDE with compositing and all desktop effects disabled runs great on my Core 2 Duo ChadPad. I notice very little difference between it and Xfce or my old CTWM environment.
