I've seen that ThinkPads are the best portable option for Linux users. I have a PC, but I'd like to carry a laptop as well on the few occasions I leave my house. Which ThinkPad do you recommend? I've seen that one of the best in terms of value for money is the T510.Which one do you recommend, anons?
You're ten years too late to the thinkpad meme. all the old ones are shit now and all the new ones are not thinkpads. even if you run puppy linux you are going to suffer with the ewaste CPU.we use framework laptops now and pray one day that a thinkpad keyboard comes out.
>>108804092My cousin has a ThinkPad with Windows; I don't know how he gets it to work, but he uses it for work and everyday use.Would it at least work with Arch Linux?
MacBook Pros are the new thinkpads
>>108804065Framework 13 Pro, next question?
>>108804387Yes, my question is what kind of faggot willingly uses a 13" display?
>>108804784Okay get the Framework 16 then, 13 inch is the standard when it comes to laptops,
>>108804065T420 if you enjoy the OG gigachad keyboardT480 if you want better hardware
>>108804109Should work assuming you know how to use archInstalled LMDE, worked no problem, pretty sure any distro will work.
>>108804065Get a maxed-out thinkpad t480
>>108804065you know which thinkpad to get
>>108804131this
>>108804131>MacBook Pros are the new thinkpadsOlder macbook pros powered by Intel x86_64 processors are better of course
>>108805270gross dude wtfblue board
>>108804092>. even if you run puppy linux you are going to suffer with the ewaste CPU.What does this line mean?
>>108805193I have 13" and it's tad too small, 14" is right size.
>>108805259If only the trackpad was nicerI have a Macbook Pro mid-2012, which is Ivy Bridge same as the T430. It's so much nicer to use and the display looks better. And it has ethernet, upgradeable ram and hdd, all I want.
>>108804092>all the new ones are not thinkpadsWhat do you mean? Won't they run Linux?
What do you guys think about ThinkPad P16s Gen 4 with AMD CPU? Did I get fucked over?
>>108805285>puppy linuxlightweight linux distro>ewaste CPUit will be too hot to use on your lap and it will sound like an airplane if you open more than 2 tabs
>>108807131>What do you mean? Won't they run Linux? They're macbooks now. They have none of the repairability or durability that the old thinkpads had
>>108807202we don't know bro. you are the one who has it, I think you should be able to decide for yourself
>>>/g/tpg/
>>108807202depends how much RAM you got and what you paid for it. s model has soldered RAM typically
>>108804065Get the same model what Stalman is using. And only use Emacs for everything.
>>108804109>I don't know how he gets it to workProbably by using all the first party software Lenovo gives these machines. If you truly believed they're some Linux exclusive wonderworld then lol, lmfao
>>108809595In fact, if he uses Windows, I asked him and he said that he has Windows 11, which really surprises me because my PC had a hard time having more than 2 applications running.
>>108807717It has a thinkpad x200, in my third world country there is no such model, I only found a couple of refurbished T series thinkpads, which are probably the best alternative and I have a tight budget
>>108809748I have a L14 G5 that runs Win11 Pro and it shipped with it from the factory. I can't tell if small sluggishness I sometimes feel is down to the mobile chip or Win11 itself but really, it's not as bad as the Internet moans it is. It's just a bit shitter 10 that you need to spend just a bit extra time to unshittify once, and after that it's just Windows. Win10 also had nightmare stories of nothing working right, and there's still more people not suffering from serious Win11 issues than there are people that do.
>>108809777Also in my experience, some laptops that run Win11 run perfectly fine and smooth. Same for Win11 desktops. Again, people have been overdramatizing how bad Win11 is ever since it released since Steam Deck also released around the same time and it's the narrative that's most comfortable to push, all the way down to news outlets that'll cry about "another disastrous Windows 11 update" with commenters masturbating to how they've switched to Linux (yet can't stop thinking about Windows, who would've thought), while staying silent about any negative Linux issues, like the two root elevation exploits that were found recently. It's more lucrative to speak ill of Windows as much as possible while staying silent about Linux getting some pie on it's face as well because people want to be outraged. Shit's nowhere near as bad in practice.
>>108809777The truth is that my PC started to work worse when it was updated to Windows 11, plus I no longer leave it connected when not using it, I think it updated itself or something like that because it always rejected and postponed the update and suddenly I had Windows 11, I still have the habit of disconnecting my PC even though I have Linux, the paranoia never goes away
>>108809802Skill issue really. Not that I'm acting smug, at this point no matter if you go with Windows or Linux, you gotta put in the work to understand and tard wrangle your OS if you want to have a good experience. While Linux has the whole distro shitfest, with Windows you'll need to know how to source LTSC IoT 2024, you'll need to know how to use Microsoft Activation Scripts, WinUtil, know third party software that doesn't suck ass and so on. With Linux you'll have an easier time having a good experience OOTB, but then you'll have a harder time doing more advanced things and no amount of beginner friendly distro handholding will help you there, you'll have to learn Linux and use the command line sooner or later. It's not some black-and-white obvious choice people online try to make it out to be. It's a choose your poison scenario, and if you're not technically inclined to wrap your head around it you'll struggle in some way anyway.
>>108807568what do you mean? the newest t14 is completely modular
Start with a T480 or T490
>>108809843Ignore the /g/tards, to them anything past the T420 is not a real ThinkPad. Or T480 because they have a fetish for the external battery. They have an obsession with ancient Lenovo models that can't last two hours on one charge and can barely handle moden web. My T420 gathers dust and sometimes gets picked up to play with Linux, but for anything serious I have the L14 with Win11, and I can swap the RAM, SSD, battery, keyboard, just about everything I'd care for. I even mounted an LTE modem in it myself to have mobile connectivity and it's insanely comfy, just pop it open and you're online.Recent ThinkPads are very modular and very repairable and anyone with a brain will get that instead of the memes /g/ loves to recommend. First gen T14's are available for dirt cheap and they're great machines. Piss easy to self-service, the battery actually lasts because the chip is power efficient, they're slim, they're lightweight, and they have actual processing power for the modern day use.
>>108809830I had a better time trying Linux distros in the end I stayed with Ubuntu and Debian, but I won't go back to Windows, plus I don't plan to pay for the activation of a system that ends up being more spyware and AI tools that I don't want or need, but for tastes there is nothing written, I like Linux and you like Windows
>>108804065in 2026 your options are a macbook or framework. thinkpads are a total meme.
>>108809889>I don't plan to pay for the activationI never paid for Windows. Any legit copies I had were OEM keys, and even then I'd end up reformatting to a better version that'd be activated. No one gives a shit about pirated Windows in a home setting, at least here.
>>108804092The fissile material in your trvke failed to achieve critical mass when you decided to shill for framework, you faggot. >>108804065Like shillanon said, you, and everyone else buying pre-quad core ThinkPads, are 10 years too late. >>108809881Recent ThinkPads are pieces of chinkshit ultrabooks. Personal computing is OVER.
>>108807564in what tropical shithole do you live anon? my t430 works perfectly fine at 40 - 52 degrees and it has the i7, unironically better temps than my gaymen laptop with normal usage
>>108810352>look at me I'm an abrasive cunt like the rest of the boardYou're not special, nor cool. Barging into anything reminiscent of a civil discussion on this board and shitting it up only makes you even more of a faggot.
I had a ThinkPad T420 for the last 5 years, I loved that computer, but I feel it shows its age already.I got a cheap P50, great laptop as well and got 2gb of VRAM for vidya, because now you can actually play games on Loonix, but if money it's not problem get a current X thinkpad, they have been trying to copy MacBook for a while, so that is that, they are a bit overpriced but still good laptops.
>>108804065The A485 is a good balance between new(ish) hardware and still being user serviceable.

>>108809881people like old models because there is a commercial offering for components.
>>108805604why are you using the trackpad if you have a thinkpad the track point is better in every way and you dont need to move your hands at all to use it. stop resisting
When are thinkpads with pantherlake hitting the US? Any of them with the X7?
>>108804092>ewaste cpui do more on a 8250u than you could even dream of doing with $9001 worth of modern hardware. faggots like you are not real enthusiasts.
>>108812080I used to really like the trackpoint but I had to face it, macbook trackpads are superior
>>108812080That's either a very pregnant squirrel or it is gonna die of bloating. From a few minutes of Googling I learned that squirrels in California have turned carnivorous.

>>108804065i dont know which one is the best, but i can say that my t420 is good enough for simple stuffi run artix and use sway, it works really really wellif you get one of those older ones, the trackpad is horrible and incredibly small, or get used using the trackpoint or just go for a full keyboard setup like i did (then use vimium on browsers)
