I don't get the point of these.
If it's in the bag secured, you can't use it.
In order to use it you have to take it out of the bag where it will be immediately seen.
If I want to be somewhere and not have me location ever pinged by my phone, I simply leave my phone somewhere else.

Real reason for airplane mode is to prevent cell towers on the ground from getting overloaded when hundreds of phones moving at high speed try to make contact.
