>WordPress co-founder and Automattic CEO Matt Mullenweg called the company’s Tumblr acquisition his biggest failure — but one he hasn’t given up on yet. The comments were made at the recent WordCamp Canada 2025 conference.

>The exec noted that Tumblr was still on a different technical stack than WordPress — something he had intended to correct by migrating the back end to WordPress infrastructure. However, that massive undertaking was put on hold earlier this year, as the cost to move Tumblr’s half-billion blogs would be difficult given that the blogging platform wasn’t profitable and continues to be sustained by the profits of other Automattic products.

>The company has tried to trim costs with layoffs and the reallocation of Tumblr resources to more profitable parts of the business, but those efforts have yet to pay off.

>Mullenweg acknowledged these concerns at his Town Hall session, saying, “I need to switch [Tumblr] over to WordPress, but it’s a big lift. It’s over 500 million blogs, actually, and, as a business, it’s costing so much more to run than it generates in revenue.”

>As a result, Automattic had to prioritize other projects to make Tumblr sustainable, he said.

>“It’s probably my biggest failure or missed opportunity right now, but we’re still working on it,” he added.

>If Tumblr were to move to the WordPress back end, it would be simpler and more cost-effective to maintain. Plus, it would enable the service to further join the open social web known as the fediverse, which was to be one perk of the WordPress migration.

>as the cost to move Tumblr’s half-billion blogs would be difficult
he seriously thought he could transfer all of tumblr to wordpress before he bought it?
I don't have a word for that level of retardity
>>
So many people missed on the glory days of when social media actually gave you freedom. Now you're just treated like farm animals expected to consume slop and shitpost all day.
>>
>>108811097
they don't expect you to post just consume
they will use AI to make slop for you
>>
I prefer old tumblr to new 4chan.
>>
>>108811094
They're both PHP/Mysql codebases, migration is probably not the problem but rather performance, I bet tumblr code is far more efficient than wordpress.
>>
>>108811111
Checked. Can't argue with quints.
>>
>>108811063
how does he not mention at all that tumblr was abandoned by its users when they banned porn, ultimately ruining his financial acquisition of tumblr?
he basically bought it then set it on fire
>>
>>108811501
and migrated to twitter as consequence

someone should tell him that literally no one cares that tumblr doesn't run on wordpress (besides him). let tumblr be and focus on what makes it unique as a social media site in regard to community, etc

Tumblr literally ruined our civilization.

I didn't even know Tumblr was still around, but I would pull what is both a Hail Mary and the only logical move:
>Remove censorship aside from the minimum legal requirements
>Call up everyone's friend, my nigga Tom Anderson (no not Neo, pic related) and hope he's still interested in social media ventures
>Tumblr/Myspace 2.0 joint revival operation
>Save the Internet
>>
>>108811088
Nobody talked like that back then. Tumblrinas and otherkins were probably less mentally ill than the average zoomer based on how you communicate.
>>
>>108811573
but enough talking about 4chan, let's focus on tumblr again.

Make it the "No AI-No Bots" platform, allow porn again, and then people will come back.

>tumblr
it's a blog website that displays text and images
I could code it in 1 hr with Claude Code $20 plan
what exactly is the giant undertaking in this?
the website barely does anything
the userbase is what's important

What "censorship"?

bandwidth is laughably cheap but actually storing info with backups is expensive.
so if you had like 1000 images that are above 1mb uploaded every day, that's 1 gig, so 30gb per month, so if we assume 1gb = 1 cent per month, that's only 30 cents per month. EZ pz.
But tumbler gets more than 1000 images stored a day, and there are probably petabytes already on tumbler, so the operating costs is probably more than a million dollars a month.
so in short, tumblr makes no money yet it costs a lot to host.
So 1 petabyte would cost (accumulate) 10k per month if 1gb costs 0.1 cents.
So if you create 1 petabyte per year and avoided deleting anything, it would take 10 years for operating costs to add up to 1 million dollars.
Of course nobody using tumblr is actually looking at the archives and plenty of blogs got deleted, and if the price changed from 1 cent to 2 cents (the cost of s3 storage, I am just assuming that amazon is overcharging with a 200% markup for storage, even though they are already overcharging egress bandwidth by 10000x), it would speed that up to 5 years.
Oh and I realized late that tumbler is already using amazon S3, so they are probably getting raped by s3 egress costs.

Mullenweg can go kill himself along with tumblr and wordpress for all I care
>>
>>108811063
The easiest way to save/fix tumblr is to invent a way to effectively travel back in time that should tell you everything you need to know about the """future""" of tumblr. Sadly we all paid the price not the tumblr fags.
>>
>>108811063
banning porn was a good thing as cumskulls are a literal blight, look at twitter, quite literally everyone is a porn addict, even the prudes larping as puritans, they're all visibly brain damaged.
>>
>>108813615
ok do that 500 million times then
>>
>>108812023
Because you can still curse like a sailor on tumblr. Zoomer ebonics is simply verbal gymnastics around word filters and censors.
>>
>>108811063
In other words, bye Tumblr. Same as Geocities and Angelfire and everybother vestige of the Old Web.
>>
>>108811111

ye, fully agree, beside that WordPress is unlikely to be ever run asynchronously. instead of drowning in the retarded slop (wordpress made long long long ago), he better be investing the base, into runtime upgrades, making it general purpose

php'tards seem to have no "middle class", either some low-level nerds departing to clang development or complete architecture astronauts, abstracting everything into one class one file
