So I'm going to finally switch over to mac, but my biggest question is it worth it to upgrade to the M5 pro and M5 Pro max for 300 dollars.
give it back jamal
What do you normally do on a laptop?
>>108814594I boughted m4 with the pro chip cus tb5 and 24gb base ram, which means itll last me 5+ yearsI wouldnt go for max unless you have a specific use case that requires it. In fact id wait for m6 due to node shrink, ie big perf gains.
>>108815140watch netflix and porn
>>108815140I'd like to make music/ my gf will eventually get an ipad to draw with. It'd be nice to game at work (emulation). It's really just general use>>108815212Isn't that a bit speculative though? I've been hearing they're doing OLED screens for years
>>108814594You can't upgrade a Mac. They have everything soldered on.
>>108815267I understand that, which is why I am asking if it's worth the 300 dollars to go with M5 pro max.
The worst in mac is his ecosystem... It's like a sect, once you're in you're fucked when you want to backup your libraries to another OS
>>108815267what the fuck is this faggot opinion theres a billion videos on youtube. you get a new nand, some solder paste a stencil and a heatgun. then you program the nand. which fucking part of that isnt possible?you mean youre too much of a lazy FAGGOT to do it? 6 year old children working at foxconn in zhangzhou can operate a stencil but you cant so its impossible?get off the tech board
>>108815283Of course. Go for the biggest you can afford. It won't get cheaper.
>>108815265>Isn't that a bit speculative though?oled display maybe, but im fairly sure the m6 chips are fabbed on tsmc 2nm which is a significant upgrade over m5
>>108815314I mean the benchmarks don't seem that huge from m5 pro to pro max. I don't know if anyone here can speak to what they have seen or used though.
>>108815283>>108815314ignore this retardm5 stock has great battery lifem5 pro/max has great performance you pick whichever one is more important if you plan to sit down and plug the laptop in get the pro/max
>>108815252If you aren't joking, then even a Neo or a base Air from an older generation will be more than enough for you.>>108815283The biggest issue with macs isn't the CPU, is that you can't expand the RAM or the SSD. You need to consider that every program will be more bloated and demand more resources with time, including the OS (which takes 20-GB of storage) and its new AI crap (that needs at least 8GB of RAM to work). Upgrade the chip only if you need the extra RAM and storage they support, but IMO getting a model with 24GB will be more than enough for atleaat 5 years, unless you do intensive tasks that consume a lot of memory.
>>108814594buy the upgrade, buy applecare, enjoy.
>>108815337intel sells the same soldered products. ssd is upgradeable, just put new chips on the board.
>>108815355Someone asking this kind of questions is never going to try to solder new chips on their device.
>>108814594if you have to ask then no
>>108815334is there a huge performance jump from pro to max though? >>108815392Ehhh that's not true, it might not be too huge of a difference to me now, but at the same time I would rather make sure and have something that's future proofed for 5+ years.
>>108815405> is there a huge performance jump from pro to max though? It is significant for gpu, but you almost certainly wont need more than procpu nah
>>108815405>is there a huge performance jump from pro to max though? Not really. Same with jumping from base to pro. Things will be done 5-10 seconds earlier, but it's not something worth spending so much money on unless you seriously need all the power possible.
>>108815416There IS a fair amount of difference from base to pro. You get a cpu upgrade, gpu upgrade and higher base rammax is if you need moar gpu cores or tons of ram
>>108815405you need identify what workloads you run and what the real world performance benefit will be and if that's worth the $300, if you don't make money from working on your computer it's not going to be worth it. And if you want future proofing you're probably better off investing that $300 now and buying a new laptop in 5 years
>>108815424OP hasn't said yet what he needs the extra power for. In 90% of cases, the base model is more than enough.
>>108815424>>108815416If I'm running ryujinx or playing some shit like total war at work though will it make it significantly better? >>108815444It's more personal use desu, I'm not making any money off this
>people using a $150 stinkpad advising some poor retard which macbook to buy
>>108815459>If I'm running ryujinx or playing some shit like total war at work though will it make it significantly better? I'll be honest with you. Macs, even the more expensive ones, suck at playing games from a price-performance view. You can play games even on the Neo with a phone chip, but the performance will be lower compared to other PCs of similar price ranges. If playing games is your only resource intensive need, you're better getting a base mac/macbook with maybe a small RAM upgrade to last with it for years without issues and then use the extra money to buy a dedicated gaming device or a PC with a real GPU.
>>108815372and they probably would never upgrade a laptop with nvme and dimms either. most people never upgrade their laptop mem or ssd. so, the whole argument about it being soldered is retarded.
>>108815493I understand it sucks at gaming, but I just want the mac for general use and shit like logic pro and sidecar with ipads
>>108815531then get the pro chip for extra ram and don’t overcomplicate things
>>108815531You're already spending X amount to get the lowest-acceptable product on your listthink of it less as the total and more as an extra $300 to have a more futureproof and robust device all around.Sometime down the line, if there's a chance you go to yourself and say>fuck I would totally just spend another $300 now to extend the usability of this laptop for another year or soThen you know the answer is to just get the nicer one right off the bat
>>108815607Yeah, that's what I figured. I was hoping to hear some people's testimonies with both of them, but I'm willing to wager there's probably only like 5 people using macs on /g/
there is zero reason to get a max just in casethere is *some* value in getting a pro
Is the MacBook Neo worth it? I can't stand Windows laptops anymore, the build quality is garbage for anything under $1000.
>>108815673nahbuy used m4 air
>>108815673if you're here you probably need a mba or pro.
>>108815673No. You're better getting an Air on sale or used. Even if Apple increases the RAM to 12GB of the Neo as the rumors claim, it will still be less than what the base model Air have, and it's almost certain that the Neos will still lack a backlit keyboard and high-speed ports.
>>108815531how big are your logic pro projects? I can fuck around with base vst and sounds or record guitar with interface on M1 air with zero issues. But I never did big mixing projects with intensive cpu.I have the M4 base pro and the difference with the M1 is minimal for most tasks. So the jump between base and pro of same chip is even less significant. The biggest difference is the much better gpu perf, higher memory bandwidth, 2 fans instead of 1, faster storage. Maybe the battery too, earlier one the base chip had better battery but idk if it’s still the same
>>108815337>you can't expand the RAM or the SSDI've never done this on any Thinkpad I've owned. Such a weird thing to complain about in a laptop.
>>108814594are you a media creator that needs to run logic/ableton/flstudio with 200 channels and render davinci renders while making after effect animations in 4k while making cuts on final cut pro all at the same time? Actually if you have to ask, you don't need any of this, you don't even need m5. Go grab a Macbook Neo retard
>>108815844>Go grab a Macbook Neo retard/g/ - technology
>>108814594if you don't use the GPU much then the max is not worth it
>>108814594Did you just have a stroke?
Does anyone know if the nano-texture upgrade is worth the 150 also?
>>108814594go with the pro chip, you 100% won't need the max one.And I'm not even sure if you even need the pro chip. I bought the macbook pro m4 pro only because I want to play some games from time to time otherwise I would have gone with the base m4.
>>108816096Will you spend the whole day outside or with a window/lamp right behind you?
Get a Mac Studio or a windows desktop for power then just remote connect from your laptop.Even with the max chip on a laptop it won’t be strong enough to do anything of value.
>>108816096No. It helps with glare but in practice it’s rarely a problem. The big downside is that the display isn’t as sharp with it as without. I wouldn’t take it for free.
>>108816367Interesting, I haven't heard this before, do you use macbooks? Most people I know glaze this feature about it, but I might use it outside maybe once a week if that if I go for a walk on sundays in the park and wanna just relax in the woods.
>>108816476I’m an applefag with apple everything except desktop pc. Have a nano texture one at work and one without as personal machine. There are some circumstances youd want it (like you use it on your porch every other day or something) but the odds are good it will be unnecessary.
The base m5 mbp not coming with wifi 7 or thunderbolt 5 is so ridiculous. Since I don't really need or want an m5 pro I'll probably just grab an upgrade m5 macbook air and see what I think.
>>108816502Just ambient light though? Also how does it deal with annoying ass office lights as well?
I want to upgrade from an old 2014 MBP I've had for almost a decade, but I live in a place where outdoor temperatures can reach 32C/89F in summer and not all the places I travel to have AC or fans, and I don't know if an Air can stay cool with those temperatures. My old MBP gets warm just by browsing internet and can reach 45C/113F degrees when I open many tabs of sites with lots of JS code running in the background or when I open more than two photoshop projects unless I force the fan to run at max speed to lower the temperature, and the last thing I want is another machine that behaves this way but now without a fan to help me.
>>108814594>So I'm going to finally switch over to macim a transsexual and youre somehow an even bigger faggot than i am. great job anon
>>108817528Always projection with trannies. I understand empathy and conceptualization is hard for autists, but not everyone is motivated by simply sitting and playing video games all day and there are programs on mac that work better than their windows alternatives.
>>108814594>maxprobably not>prohow much more RAM do you get>>108815405you pay for that in heat and battery lifedon’t get a Max unless you’re sure you need the vroom
>>108817550i make more money than you and we only use windows at work. cope
>>108817675Again, your autism shines through once again. No one brought up work. I think it's better for hobbies
>>108817722your hobbies are probably terrible dude. Nobody cares about your Toy OS
base model M5 Air (around $1000 I think) scores 5770 on cpubenchmarksheard it's even fine for gaming these daysit's just insane how hard Apple mogged everyone since the release of M1why would you get any other laptoponly exception for me is Framework 13 Pro but I'm not waiting 6 months for shipping for something that's worse and more expensive than a Macbook in every way except that it can run Linux and be repaired
>>108817296the old intel macs ran really warm. the arm stuff runs without as much heat.
>>108817296sounds like you want a computer with fansthat said, there are laptop cooling pads that have fans that will blow on the computerbut that’s clunky and you’ll hate it
>>108818722it's time to move on schizo. intel macs are ancient history.
>>108815824good for you but not everyone is youi have upgraded my current laptop workstation twice, and did so for the previous oneram and storage, just like what you can't touch on soldered ones
>>108814594i have an m1 pro. works great, does everything i need it to, so don't waste your $
>>108819141He died over a decade ago you small, angry, broke brownoid.
>>108814594Macs are for nonbinaries.Get a laptop with real sex appeal: get yourself a maxed out Thinkpad P16 or whatever workstation laptop.Don't go gay. Thank me later.
>>108819228Apple is brown coded. The White Man forges his own way with a GNU/Linux, like Qubes OS!
>>108814594>So I'm going to finally switch over to mac, but my biggest question Macs are good for general use, but bad for gaming>is it worth it to upgrade to the M5 pro and M5 Pro max for 300 dollars. You don't
Just switched my work PC to a Macbook Pro myself, am very happy. If you're doing local ML/AI work I'd max it out as much as you can afford.
>>108815311>a 6 year old when given the exact proper tools and procedures can do a thing on a blank boardYou're a fucking idiot.
>>108815673>Is the MacBook Neo worth it?Nah
>>108814594>upgrade to the M5 pro and M5 Pro max for 300 dollars.no, just get more RAM.
>>108815405>is there a huge performance jump from pro to max though?M5 Pro and M5 Max have the exact same CPU, it is the GPU that is twice as fast (provided that we're talking about non-binned/full options of the chips)
>>108821098i'd respect you more if you weren't so fucking retarded>compares gaymer laptops to a business computer
>>108815673At that specific price point for a brand new laptop, yes.At Macbook Air price point, a stinkpad with the new Intel chip surpasses Macbook in every single way.
>>108819860>Macs are for nonbinaries.macs use binary
>>108822186I mean whoever buys a mac is gay... Don't be gay.
>>108822263stinkpad + gentoo/arch is the gayest shit ever
>>108814594kill yourself
>>108822560Arch is gay, try Qubes OS.
