Am I retarded for finding the abandonment of i386 ISA ports of modern operating systems rather disappointing? 32-bit x86 is essentially the most versatile and reliable fallback architecture out there; almost every relevant OS from 1990-2021 (ending with shitdows 11) supported it, the software library for it spans over 3 decades, and it has proven battle-tested with the i386-EX variant used in embedded systems & fault-tolerant spacecraft. I don't believe Windows 11 or macOS need to support it for 40 years longer, no. But I do think at least some big name Linux or BSD variant should release rare "heartbeat" patches for these kinds of computers, just in case.

>>108816391I wish someone would explain to me the obsession with updooting. On such an ancient cpu the latest OS is going to run like garbage too. Just use an older version of the OS on your ancient cpu.
>>108816391I can sort of understand dropping Itanium but getting rid of x86 support in Linux for "maintenance overhead" reasons while simultaneously forcing another programming language into the kernel is the most retarded move I've ever seen freetards make
>>108816391BSD still does it
>>108816580pure x86 is absurdly outdated, rust has many advantages in use, c specially the stdlib is terrible and unfixable bc too many shit depends on arbitrary decisions from the 70s
what a retarded thread
>>108816391I'm a retard and was kind of sad when i read it, so yeah. I think that means you're a retard.
>>108816391would you pay money to have people work on some dead-end old ISAlike, enough money to have people backport patches to it, not just Netflix-sub moneyme neither
