This is a thread about portable pcs for gaming and how shit/retarded/based/etc they are.
im genuinely surprised these have a market for them.that people like Asus and others can manufacture these and make a profit is impressive. AI estimates between 1.5 and 0.8M units sold, which in the grand scheme of things, isn't very many.there are people out there that care so much about handhelds that they actually write a check in the tens of millions of dollars for them.think about that: however autistically obsessed some /g/amers may be about handhelds, none of them hold a candle to the coked-out exec at Asus or Microsoft - he lives, breathes, puts his corporate career on the line for these gadgets. dude is probably an olympic gymnast at pushing the sales figures.i still maintain (and this isnt an original thought of mine), that the biggest threat facing the gaming industry is social media. competing with doom scrolling is very, very hard.
>>108829544come to think of it, i wonder how much of the gaming industry is getting 'bailed out' by single shut-in millenials and genXers with a lot of spare cash.i think the gaming industry is in for a serious reckoning come 2035. who will still be playing games? hard to image genZ giving a rats behind about all this bing bing wahoo stuff... or am i projecting?
can we stop calling these handhelds? PSP was a handheld, nintendo DS was a handheld, this xbox huge piece of shit is not a handheld
>>108829544Hardware execs are always looking for growth markets, which handhelds are. Idk if anyone is actually making money on them at this point other than Valve.
>>108829660you hold them in your hands without any extras requiredthey are handheldsnot pocket sized but still handhelds
>>108829660>HOLD it on your HANDS to play>not handheldretard
>>108829469Just use one of these you retarded fucks and use it wired
>>108829469I picked up one of these a couple years ago. It's awesome! I had a Switch lite and one day was thinking "i wish i had this exact form factor but with emulators" and then I discovered these handhelds. The newer ones keep getting bigger, hotter, etc, which is kind of dumb but whatever. The one I got can play up to dreamcast/gamecube which is what I was looking for. I'd say I play mostly Game Boy Color and Genesis games on it.They are small, have good battery life, and don't cost much( I think this was $200?). Really cool for when I'm sitting on the couch or whatever listening to a podcast and want to play Tetris or something. Brings back the old game boy vibe, just with a way better library of games (anything you want).
I have no idea what the appeal is as a shitty gaming only laptop. I stream games from PC to my phone with one of those phone controller mount things and it's ok, I can't imagine enjoying it at worse resolution, worse framerate and worse visuals all on a heavier/louder/hotter device. But using it as my tv frontend most of the time and undocking periodically is an actual usecase I'm looking into. I just need valve or kde big screen modes to stop being shit.
>>108829561Gen Z plays live service slop, so the gaming industry is fucked unless they have live service slop that the zoomers play. Only a limited number of live service slop can be successful, because people who play that only have enough time to play 1, maybe 2 games.
>>108830239People play what is presented to them. The "live service slop" crowd is not the same demo that would play other types of games. The "mass market" is not the only market and the big-spending in recent years has forced many companies out of the peripheral/niche markets. That means opportunity.
>>108830169That's just >>108829816 + retroarch. Flagship phones run circles around cheap handhelds.Even those $20 8bitdo mini controllers with the vertical clip get you like 80% of the way there.
>>108830684It's the form factor. Attaching a controller to my phone with some awkward plastic is dumb. My phone is for other things, this is for playing games. 120mhz oled doesn't make Tetris DX look better
>>108830169>I had a Switch lite and one day was thinking "i wish i had this exact form factor but with emulators"You could had installed a modchip inside the Switch and achieved the same thing unless I'm missing something.
>>108830919doesn't work on switch lite
>>108829544for me my legion go is just like a portable linux tablet with really good performance for the price and some detachable controllers for convenienceI don't game so much in it as I code and browse the web desuit's better than a laptop
>>108830868>awkward plasticLiterally just pop it into a spring mount. Makes a good phone stand. They even have magsafe now. It's pretty well balanced if you have a good controller with some heft. BONUS: You have an actual good controller.>120mhz oled doesn't make Tetris DX look better50% BFI makes anything produced for CRTs a lot better.
I always wanted to get one but the SoCs are horrendous for the price. You either get arm chips on the low end with dogshit linux upstream support. Or you go x86 where the steam deck is the cheapest, but already kinda outdated, at the very least not worth its price anymore. Maybe the steam deck 2 will be interesting.
>>108831235You can get the strix halo in handheld form. 4060ish performance (with adequate vram) in handheld form without any of the arm/Android compatibility issues is pretty decent. Ofc the price is retarded and its some chinkshit but oh well. https://gpdstore.net/product/gpd-win-5/?srsltid=AfmBOop-kwaWdlfKZQH6qTOK7vYwAKjvRKTDsVmy49Y1DcUVP1qBodX0
>>108831335>2500 for a chinkheld that will scan your retina and firebomb your house
>>108831000You really don't understand at all.
>>108830210>I just need valve or kde big screen modes to stop being shit. The new KDE Big Screen mode releases in the middle of next month. We'll see if it's any good. We'll see.
does anyone here have an AYN thor? how the hell do i mount this thing so i can dump files directly onto its internal storage? lsblk shows nothing when i plug it in, and when i try to switch the USB connection to "controlled by connected device" on the thor itself i get a "couldn't switch" error. yes the cable has data throughput and yes so does the usb-c port im plugging it into. i've tried this one 2 different machines with no luck.
>gaminggrow up
>>108832657I understand your confirmation bias holds up even in the face of direct refutation.
>>108832861make sure the usb cable supports otg otherwise it will only charge rather than transfer data.you can only bypass the cable entirely with ftp. the thor is wifi7 so its fast hell.
>>108832892also bypass*
>>108832861Works on my machine so I guess its driver related on your PC.
>>108832874you sound indian
>>108829469I got a regular Xbox ally for sub 500 and that felt like a good enough deal. Now the question is due I keep Winblows on it or install Bazzite Handheld Edition?
>>108829469i bought an odin 2 portal and it has been pretty goodcan emulate pretty much everything up until switch and anything that doesnt run is because of software issuescan also play ps3 era pc games like metal gear rising at 720p60fps on medium settings and pc emulation is getting better and better because of valves dev work
>>108829816I want to be less dependent on my phone, not more.if I didn't need it for my job I'd replace it with a dumbphone and never look back
>>108830937yes it does
>>108832870Yeah, hold up. Let me go back to being a boring fucking person. How's the lawn neighbor? You watched the Bills game last night? Having trouble prepping the bull for the wife?Im such an adult!Youre no better. Youre on fucking 4chan
whats a good one if I only want a dpad and only need like 2 buttons for gameboy/gbc emulation?
>>108833708what if i do all these things but im a gamer
I bought a used rog ally x for the price of the white rog xbox ally and I use it all the time. I recommend switching to cachyos handheld or steamos though because windows is a nightmare. the first thing you see after the hours of windows updates and shit is a taskbar full of bloatware and like a million popups its so bad
>>108833786the scary part is that there are cia goy nigger cattle out there who think the windows experience is acceptable
>you could get a steam deck for the price of just a single RTX 5060 alone...can't believe desktop PC gaming is pricing itself out of reach of the normies but here we are.
>>108833809The Steam Deck can barely play any games though unless you deem 30 fps 720p playable. A chinese android based handheld would be better value for the same tier of performance.
>>108833727plus any phone new enough to have lte
>>108833809Z1 Extreme should be the absolute minimum you should go for if you want actual decent performance.
>>108833727there are youtube reviews that got you covered. tons of form factors and often pretty cheap if you only want to run stuff like gbc. retro gaming corps? is a channel that has a ton.
>>108833695maybe it does but i don't want to buy a soldering iron and screwdriver sets so i can try and not break something that works fine already. why are you so against this idea of having a device that is purpose built and executes the task well?
>>108833934I dont want a separate handheld
>>108829544i've been thinking of getting one the last few months to gaym while lying down because sitting at my desk to play games for a couple hours is getting painful, literally, for my hunched neck
>>108833940I like pushing my devices to their best. Jailbreak them and make them free.I started with my PSP and will forever fondly remember it for all it thought me.
>>108833962why the fuck are you in this thread then
which one of these is the best for < $1500 ?
>>108834088they let retards like you post here nowadays?
>>108834096steam deck oled has the best displayrog ally x xbox has the best grip, form factor and performance
>>108833786I actually got a Xbox Ally (non-X) coming today. Should I even boot it into windows or just install Cachy Handheld?
>>108833809>you could get a steam deckhaven't all the 'ecks been sold out for a while now?
>>108833940NTA but I think it's wasteful/consoombrain to purchase another device for similar results and I prefer making the most of hardware I already have. Point taken on not wanting to damage it, it's not easy without experience especially when it involves microsoldering.
>>108835051Legion Go 2 also has an OLED screen. It's probably the best handheld atm.
I put on my fedora and trenchcoat yesterday and went to my local Best Goy to see what the main options were like>legion go 2Awesome screen but that bitch is big and some of the "features" (fps mode) seem like total bullshit lol (and the trackpad is rather uncomfortably placed). I like the detachable controllers just in case. Then again the price for this thing is absurd, like 1599 for the not-dogshit version.>xbox ally xkind of a shit to mediocre screen. Felt awesome to hold. Don't really give a shit about the extra software. The price to performance is pretty good at 1000 burgers>le clawFelt like a compromise between the lego and ally. Wasn't blown away but I could see the vision.>steam deckNot seen at the store but I've handled one before. 500 bucks is cheap though the hardware is getting old atp.Probably gonna get the ally x as the legion is way too expensive and i'm gonna use it to drive my tv more than a handheld anyway. But the extra juice will be nice when I'm away.
>>108835440You can try using Windows just so you can get a taste for how bad it is, that way you can appreciate the steamos/cachy handheld experience
>>108835678i'd always thought it cost more than $1.5kthe form factor sucks too, way too bulky and unwieldable
