how's gentoo on a thinkpad t490S? i wanna try t out but i'm quite worried about compilation times for things like Librewolf and the linux kernel. i'm not worried about general installation though, as i've installed artix, void, and arch linux multiple times before.currently, i use debian on that machine. is the configuration time, compilation time, and general installation worth it compared to what i already have on debain?i value my performance when plugged in, battery life when not, and general privacy, stability, and security. i currently use power-profiles-daemon for the battery stuff.also, i'm familiar with open-rc. i typically use KDE plasma, steam, 1password, librewolf, cider.sh, some code editors, etc.i code mostly web dev stuff (so html, css, and js), but i've been slowly learning C,C++, and Rust. how would my development workflow change with that, if at all?
>>108829734i dont own a 490 but i do use gentoo on a t420, gnu icecat took roughly 8-9 hours to compile, i dont game on this laptop so idk about steam or anything else mentioned
>>108829734I've tried Gentoo on a T510 and it wasn't great - the compile it is just horrible.Since these machines don't have much RAM by default, you won't be able to safely use parallel compilation to leverage all your CPU cores, otherwise your system will start swapping and the compile speed will go from horrible to hopeless.I did manage to compile Firefox, the kernel, and a minimalist desktop environment on my T510. However you mentioned KDE, which uses the QT libraries, which has an obese code base and can take more than a day to compile. My advice: don't do it. Use Artix, which is second to Gentoo when it comes to freedom of customization.
>>108829734>compilation times for things like LibrewolfThere's "librewolf-bin" in the "librewolf" overlay.
