i have one of these things and decide to use it as usual. the thing suddenly decides to turn itself off as i'm recording. the disk thinks it's empty. i've tried getting one of those crappy "data recovery" softwares, and it also thinks the disk is empty.

i can see the data in the disk and something did record. am I the idiot for doing something wrong, or are disk readers just really stupid these days?

get a replacement copy from ebay idk

you know what, it's worth a shot. you have any recommendations for a specific brand?
>>
>>108848345
do you want to use the same one or something else before i tell you
>>
theres a reason these things fell out of favor
>>
>>108848379
honestly, probably similar. i'm more familiar with sony products
>>
>>108848396
alr then do you want something similar to this era or a bit modern
>>

I can recommend getting one of those handycams with a hard drive since you can avoid the trouble of different mediums such as taps for example and transfer to a computer
>>
>>108848427
look, something that has the optical lens, a stereo mic, and decent infrared mode, as that's why I used the camera in the first place. It's fine if it's modern or of that time period, it just better work just as fine as it

>hard drive
a handycam with a hard drive? I'm interested.
>>
>>108848458
wait hold on, what is your budget
>>
>>108848483
less than $400 idealy, but I can make due with up to $700 with enough saving
>>
>>108848489
if you want something cheaper i guess the Sony DCR-SR85 and Sony HDR-SR12 for a bit moer recent or if you have the money Sony FDR-AX700 its like 2 grand

thanks for the suggestions. i'll place that onto my list for when i have a better job, or when the market crashes, whichever one happens first.

Do you have a MiniDV or hard drive based camera?
>>
>>108848511
the minidvd one. that's why i mentioned the disks acting as if there's not twenty or so minutes of footage on them
>>
>>108848513
MiniDV has no disk. I don't know how you're running data recovery on a tape.

i'm referring to the image here, not a tape
>>
>>108846527
What are you using it for?
>>

Cameras that are recording on mini DVDs are fucking retarded, though it's mostly the fault of the format.
In contrast to cameras recording on SD cards or cassettes that can just record shit on the fly and the result can be played easily, the DVD format requires discs to be finalized to be readable by DVD players, if they're not finalized DVD players have a stroke trying to read them. Those cameras have an alternative recording method called DVD-VR that's supposed to make the DVD behave more like an SD card but in my experience quite a few disc readers struggle to properly read such discs.

a 3x or 10x optical lens? 120 or 240 degree stereo mic. You have to be specific.
