How much is added on top of AOSP to create the Android images that ship with modern phones (specifically regarding the UI)? It seems like AOSP currently provides just basic functionality and is meant to be heavily customized with skins like One UI. Is this because Google wants to distance its actual development from AOSP?
Heavily depends on who is distributing it. The nexus line it was just drivers for the phone and the google app suite. Now pixels are just like any other phone oem with tons of slopware and garbage instead of a clean smooth OS.
>>108846783It's because google wanted to capture the smartphone OS market so it could capture more information to sell, and it needed to forestall the other phone manufacturers from developing their own OSs. But once it had done that, then AOSP became a pure cost center so google only did the bare minimum to keep the other phone manufacturers on board.
>>108846797Try using GrapheneOS and try again.Yes, there are Google additions, but the main UI elements like Settings and Quick Toggles are identical.
>>108846850>GrapheneOSIt would be nice if you could root this as easily as the pixel images.
>>108846874Root? That's insecure. GrapheneOS is about security.
>>108846783>open sources Android to offload testing and development to the community >receives thousands of big reports and patches>still never fixes anythingWhat did Google mean by this?

>>108846850>GayphagOS
>>108846783>>108846846>>108846947the real reason is because google wants to go full dystopia like apple and make AOSP useless so they can have more power and lock down everything. they are moving a lot of the vital android stuff to Google Mobile Services (formerly google play services) to make you dependent on it. and of course good luck using banking and social media apps without participating in the endless cat and mouse game of magisk modules and spoofer crap to counter google.
