ive been using freebsd for a while now and i think its a very cozy operating system. everything just feels really neat and clean about it, i like the file system heirarchy, manpages and the fact my whole operating system just feels like it fits together. zfs is nice too. i used void before this and they feel similar in my experience. its mostly been a drop in replacement for linux for me. i also like the package manager and the ports system. to me freebsd feels like a very nice unix system without many "gimmicks". also, i think the beastie mascot is really cute. as for the license, having permissive instead of copyleft just doesnt affect me in a tangible way personally. netbsd and openbsd are also really cool but freebsd has better support for my hardware and as a desktop OS generally it just works. its not the OS for everybody but i would recommend at least giving it a try if you think it could fit your use case.

>>108847824the only thing i really don't like about freebsd (and other BSDs) is that i have to merge my config files manually every time they're updated, it's annoying
>>108847985Where did you read that FreeBSD is intended to be run in a VM?
>>108847824I wanted to give it a try but unfortunately I made the mistake of having a GPU from NVidia (bought back when Windows was ass but not irredeemably so) and it apparently dislikes that too much to load the GUI
>>108848038he was making a joke about driver support, or that the devs literally run it in a vm and mostly use macbooksopenbsd devs don't do that. openbsd devs are chads
>>108848389FreeBSD does have Nvidia drivers, did you make sure the drivers support your card?
>>108848597yeah as best as I can tell it's specifically a problem with the whole Optimum switching thing probably. Lets me disable the dGPU, but I'm not sure it's properly enabling the iGPU and it refuses to let me unload the Nvidia drivers - just says that the command isn't recognisedI'll give it a try next card, I suppose
>>108848619*file, not commandif it was command not found I'd just be a retard who couldn't spot a typo
>>108848038The primary FreeBSD devs only run it in a VM, not on real hardware. For many years the primary funding for FreeBSD development was Netflix, who also only ran it in VMs.
>>108850275>who also only ran it in VMsWell that's a bit misleading, all enterprises were using type-1 hybervisors on servers by then, with but with virtio interfaces, so it's not like something like OpenBSD with almost no hardware support.
I just noticed they updated the website.I liked the old website :(
fuck off fag, you literally don't do anything with it.
I personally dislike the shell script based init system. I like that there is a wizard that will allow you to easily set secure defaults in a multi-user system
>>108850723>all enterprises were using type-1 hybervisors on servers by thenI wonder how many enterprise users of bhyve there are, I personally have had a better experience with it than qemu+kvm on linux
