Plenty of employees of these companies, especially on the agentic development area, have lots of experience as programmers.But I would agree on the research front that the people pushing things forward are mostly smart guys who are researchers. I sometimes browse these lab's employees CV's and it really are about what you'd expect. The guys doing the most for AI research have PhDs in machine learning. With expectations being guys with elite undergrads anyway.
