The wheel is overrated levers were what really started humanity's technological ascension. the microchip, internal combustion engine, plough and stirrups were all have core principles based on the lever.

They were important, because large buildings were build from heavy materials only though extensive use of levers (in cranes), but there is something else to it. You can't really have a crane without a rope. Also originally all sorts of wagons that had wheels were supported by tied ropes.

There are plenty alternatives to wheels: sleds, rollers, walking mechanisms, etc.
But pretty much any rigid object instantly becomes a lever the moment you use it, leverage cannot be avoided.
