How good are LLMs now? Can they solve PhD level homework?
>>108864675>Can they solve PhD level homework?Yes, but not for the reason you think.
>>108864675phds get homework?
>>108864675yes. but you being a retard will be discovered once you start applying for jobs with your fake degree.
>>108864686What do you mean
>>108864742why would the job not be feasible with AI if the degree is feasible with AI
>>108864751the degree just gets you an interview, nothing more.the employer will test you to see if you actually know anything. you're fucked.and if the job can be done by AI why would he need to hire you at all?
>>108864687If you count RA work
>>108864762In Europe you have oral examinations even at undergrad.
>>108864750>What do you meandoctoral programs that offer homework are for shit eating retards, hence your llm being able to complete things a spastic can do is not a win
If they get trained on PHD level data then surely?
>>108864750They had the answer in their training set and they simply remembered it.If your professor wasn't lazy by some chance and created his own homework then you're out of luck.
>>108864762We're talking about PhD here - which means OP wants to work in academia. It's useless degree if you want to work in private sector. Could be counterproductive even - you could've collected real experience during that time.
My college has accepted their fate, AI detection software is unreliable because you can feed old documents from 50 years ago and it will still detect it as AI and professors know about this. I have written three essays in AI and passed all of them.
>>108864675Nigger a PhD is a research degree. You don’t have fucking homework, it’s just work.
>>108865161I mean in Europe a lot of Academia is tied to industry and their contracts.>>108865222That's what I meant, sorry.
yes but you need to have a phd to know if they solved it right
>>108864675>>108865371I have little doubt that someone or a team of people who really knew what they were doing could get a PhD project amount of output out of agentic LLMs.Ir wouldn't be a very novel or broad project but I could definitely see it done considering some of the PhD work I've seen in the past.Couldn't do my project though, too much hands-on work required
>>108865387But at the end of the day you still need to know what to ask and carefully read it, so it's not like it's doing the work for you, just finding what you need.
>>108865542Yeah, it's more of a force multiplier. You still need to know what you're doing
>>108864675>PhD level homeworkwhat fucking homework you shit eating retardat the phd level the only homework you see is one you gave out
>>108865161>PhD here - which means OP wants to work in academia.no it doesn't. if you want to do any remotely interesting R&D in industry you also need a PhD (or an equivalent amount of work + lots of luck)
>>108865800The most used server OS was designed by people without PhDs.
ye ye, very good, supagut https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_AAptIx5LvU
>>108865800Why luck?>>108865834
>>108864675
>>108866245Without the actual PhD paperwork, you 1) won't ever be offered the possibility to work on 'equivalent' topics that would allow you to get into a research position in industry, and 2) even if you managed to luck out there, the vast majority of HR thots won't let you pass initial screening despite what the job posting says about "or equivalent experience".
>>108864675Still can't do the work of a really bad intern that will be fired next week.
>>108865834that was in an age before saturation. if you look at the people currently pushing the state of the art in machine learning, robotics, etc a phd is an entry level degree
>>108865834Dennis Ritchie completed a PhD, he only didn't get the title because he literally didn't want to pay the fee to get it professionally bound and he was already at Bell Labs.
>>108865834Linux was based on Unix, which was created by people with PhDs.
>>108864675LLMs cant even solve WHAT IS THE ORDER OF OPERATIONS IN MATH 90% of the time.
>>108864675if you are nothing without your LLM, than you are indeed nothing
>>108864675I think the big issue is accountability.>LLM agent screws up, costing your company big $. What are you going to do, fire it? You can’t sue it, you have no recourse.
>>108864675cute coon
>>108867682I remember all the shitposting around BEDMAS even on 4chan almost 20 years ago. Good (very very bad) times. Americans will never stop to crack me up with how stupid their education is.
>>108864675>How good are LLMs now?good. it created a working 1300 line program for me after my unique requirements. if i had done it myself it had took me 1 or 2 weeks.
>>108864750>PhD's are designed for Redditors.>AI is trained on Redditors.Simple as.
racoon lady <3
My agent once again using 30% of the quote trying to figure out how to craft an `rg` search pattern and flushing its context with garbage results. Or failing to figure out the complex task of correctly invoking `mv` without data loss.
Recent PhD graduate here. We do not have "homework". You may have graded classes for the first couple of years, particularly if you are not able to transfer graduate level classes from a masters degree (or did not obtain a masters degree), but the majority of what you are working on is research. There are some ways an LLM might help make your research more efficient, but you can't really fully automate it. Also, many conferences and journals will require you to disclose where AI has been used in the research process.
>>108869833I’m always blown away by how few people know what goes into getting a doctorate.Bachelors= Basically remembering, understanding, and applying. Masters = Applying, analysis, and evaluation.Doctorate = Creating. Already a master of a subject, your time is spent evaluating (researchibg) the subject matter to the point where you start thinking “hmm what if?” all the time and eventually add something completely new to the knowledge base (being published with peer review).

From the fields I interact with, only two fields feel threatened by AI: econ and writing. Econ people are full-on koolaid drinkers, a tenured professor here told his students that the field is over but that they should stick with the PhD for the stipends because the economy is messed up. But econ people are the weird ones in this section of academia, you'll notice a lot of the singularity vagueposting cultists like James Miller have an econ background. The writing students do not feel like AI threatens them because it is better, but because the sort of employment that writing/rhetoric/composition students seek after graduating is low hanging fruit for academic administration to take a hatchet to. Claude creates inferior outcomes to tutoring and human peer review, but administrationoids don't care. Academic administration at most universities is obsessed with shoehorning AI into whatever they can. The administration itself likes it because it lets them reroute funding to themselves, where they can create offices of "AI literacy" while cutting tenure lines and services for the students. The board of trustees generally like AI because they are conservative boomers that are themselves enthralled with AI. Like that's why we keep seeing commencement speakers make out of touch speeches about the transformative power of AI.
>>108867734>What are you going to do, fire it?Easy, just shift all the responsibility on the developers. What's happening now is>introduce huge task/LOC quotas that can only be met with non-stop LLM use>isn't feasible to review by a human>devs just cross fingers and proompt more>eventually a hallucination appears>human fired>there are million clueless humans ready to take his placeand the cycle repeats
>>108869897>bachelors>understandingLOL. Even masters are often rote learners. PhDs on average understand a bit more, but many are hyperfocused and fail to see the bigger picture. Almost all people are retarded.>inb4 tips fedora m'lady >>>/r/iamverysmartI am also dumb, but have seen really bright people. It's demoralizing, but it is what it is.
