My interpretation is that it "just worked" in ways previous versions hadn't. Yes there was some bloat, but for the first time you could be reasonably assured that the installation process would be painless (barring BIOS/UEFI mismatches or using a RAID card for the installation volume) and damn near everything would work right out of the box or after it found drivers automatically. Older stuff worked with it in a way that's been lost on Windows 10/11, and the interface was the refinement of what everyone had been used to up to that point. You didn't need a fucking MS account or a bypass just to get going.

many sound cards worked if they were from creative but everything else kinda needed a driver, even realteks which are embedded on motherboards

however before 2004 the embedded sound cards were AC 97 compatibles and not necessarily made by realtek, all those had a built in support

then also many RAID cards had preinstalled drivers if the card was from 2001 to 2008

everything that had a Vista driver, often had a 7 driver as well, as 7 included drivers taken from Vista, unless microsoft had deemed it too unstable

Drivers were never a problem. The OEM of the device installed those on your OS before shipping it and people who built their own shit knew everything there was to know about getting and installing drivers.

Comparing it to 10 and 11 and saying "it's better than that" is very much pointless. Windows has been going downhill ever since Microsoft released XP.

That's the bloat. Everything Just Werks on 7 because it's bloated with a bunch of shit and whatever it's missing, it guesses and auto-installs drivers for you whereas previously you would only install specific drivers you needed. Win 7 is for tech-illiterates.

I dont remember it being slow and i used to run it on 2 core CPU. It was fully featured. No need for containers, sandboxes, VM and various layers of compatibility to have useable system. Wayland made things even worse for Linux users.
