>>108887156which is the cheapest one with av1 decoding ?
i just use old laptops i have lying around.
>>108887398The cheapest hardware is always hardware you already have. - Sun Tzu
>>108887398>laptops usually don't have power on acdropped
>>108887156Anyone uses these as home server?
>>108887761I uses those for that
>>108887781How do you handle the limited storage?
>>108887789A few terabytes is enough for my usecase
>>108887398yeah, I don't really see the purpose of mini pcs besides at work reallyand I mostly use laptops with docking then, which pretty much fullfills the same purpose, only that I can bring it around if I have to
>>108887838Suppose he meant 256/500GB
>>108887761I do>>1088877892TB + 4TB solid + 20TB HDD in enclosure
>>108887761I do. A chinky shitbox I bought for $70 in 2018
>>108887955>20TB HDD in enclosureHow do these works?Any RAID?I was thinking of running arch, and then run a NAS os in container.
>>108887972>>How do these works?>plug hdd in enclosure>plug usb enclosure to usb port>>Any RAID?forget about raid, the only raid you could do is raid 1 on the internal drives>>I was thinking of running arch, and then run a NAS os in container.doable but you'll be restricted by storage if you want raid
during the next couple of months I'll be ordering an nvidia dgx spark (or its equivalent from other brands) for the ultimate mini pc
>>108887156I used one of those thinkcenters in OP pic for about a year as my daily driver. I at some point realized that if I'm gonna use a thinkcenter from 2016, I should just buy a Thinkpad T480 and use it doecked most of the time. It paid off because my new job has me doing lots of traveling. I do use one of those GMKtec mini PCs as a home server though.
>>108887846I use mine as an HTPC thats mounted to the back of my TVits nice
I use mine to make sure my software runs well on modest computers. Good test computer to throw in your bag when you travel also.
How reliable are those chink boxes like GMKtec, Beelink, Geekom etc.? Seems like they typically don't provide any BIOS updates or anything either.Usually I look for barebones like MSI Cubi or Shuttles which specifically mention 24/7 usage. Besides a broken SDD here and there they run pretty smoothly. Just need something with two ethernet ports that runs some PLC software for customers
>incel wildcat released in shitty laptopshow long until mini pcs appear? 6 mths?
>>108887156My home server running alpine linux, just use it to run docker containers.
what do you retards even keep on 4 hdds, 8k60 porn?I have a 2x8 tb ssd and cant fill the fuckin things
>>108887761i use one of those as a bluetooth speaker, printer server amd game server
>>108891638Retard, you can't use a PC as a speaker
>>108893241the pc appears to have speakers built in. I wish I knew what pc that was though.
>>108893241>>108893290ok, upon searching, that's a thinkcentre m90n nano IoT. Very small machine.
>>108890596nice
>>108893241i use the bluetooth module and connect it to a stereo over aux that doesn't have bluetooth. it's my bluetooth speaker setup. i also have a spotify connect service running on it.
>>108893324>Very small machinethe version with the fan is like the size of a psp while mine is a bit taller.
>>108891638>bluetooth speakerI'm glad I'm not the only one. What's your work flow?
>>108896938set it up until it does the thing i want it to do. followed by me forgetting what i did to set it all up because i haven't touched it in over a year because it has been working since then without issues.i also setup unattended updates (both feature and security updates and auto reboots) and ubuntu pro because i wanna see how reliable a setup like that is.
Just got a Dell Optiplex 7050 to run an ada node and some light doge unminable mining, wont get rich, but it's fun
>>108887838That's a lot of chinese cartoons.
>>108894908Aww...I wanted to hack you by having your MAC address.
would it matter if the cmos battery on my NUC dies? it's hard to replace, it's not simply about replacing the battery, that would be too easy, it's the black plastic casing thing it comes with (which plugs to the motherboard).
>>108897093I meant for the BT speaker.I use audiotube in podman container.
>>108898067Harvest a couple of pins and stick them into the motherboard socket, then push the battery connector onto those pins.
>>108898589i just connect to the bluetooth of my server via my phone and tell my phone that this device is a bluetooth speaker. it just outputs to the 3.5mm jack that is plugged into my stereo. it all runs directly on the server itself. i had to write a systemd service and script to auto accept any connections made so i don't have to do it via ssh. you can do this on a regular desktop even.
>>108898626...or bend the pins so a 2032 battery holder can be soldered to them.
>>108898635How?I don't think this is possible?
>>108898635I've done the same kind of thing before when connecting to a switch for audio, it's just a thing computers can do.
>>108898667you just have to set the computer itself as a speaker on your phones bluetooth settings and it is just going to play back audio. it works really well. i tried it again and it just works.
>>108898667>>108898715scratch that it even works without changing anything.
>>108887761I actually came here to ask the same question. Hope to find something silent or silent-ish and not expensive to run Linux or FreeNAS on it to run a wire guard or tailscale gateway on it and experiment with containers and stuff without getting my big NAS involved. Separate vlan and all.Would be grateful for any suggestions that wont break my bank.
>>108887156>>108887761This stack runs my matrix server + email + personal website !!
>>108887240>av1 decodingIntel 11th,12th,13,th,14th gen can do 8-bit and 10-bit decoding.Core Ultra can additionally do 12-bit decoding.
>>108900332How do you deal with email whitelists blocking self hosters?
>>108900495All my traffic is wireguarded through a VPS
>>108900675I mean when I wanted to setup my own mail server, I've read that most big email providers block emails from non whitelisted domain and ip combinations or mark them as spam
I got a used refurbed Dell optiplex business mini pc to use for living room TV to do media piracy and youtube, they are pretty cheap on Amazon renewed, and the Intel I5 versions are fast enough for me
>>108898626>>108898639...i'll live without a cmos. don't want to do anything sketchy and blow up my nuc because i fumbled it like a dumbass.
>>108890678hololive VODsiykyk
>>108900495>>108900889The easiest way is to set up a free smtp2go account and route your outgoing mail through there, it costs nothing and I think you can send 1000 emails per month which I've never hit. Yes it's not 100% selfhosting but incoming mail, user mailboxes and so on are still handled by your mail server.
>>108901618Thanks!Ill look into it.My current biggest fear is losing access to all my accounts if Google or Proton decide to tell me fuck myself
>>108890343I have a couple gmktec nucboxes. One i rebuilt into an old xbo 360 shell. Its my tv computer for retro games and streaming. I have not had a single issue. The second i bought as a backup becuase they were cheap before the ram shortage.I cant speak to other brands but gmk tec seems to work fine and i hear good things about beelink and acemagic as well
>>108900311>silent or silent-ish and not expensive to run Linux or FreeNAS>Would be grateful for any suggestions that wont break my bank.Search for thin clients instead of mini-PCs.
>>108901618>>108900889i've run a mail server since 2013, just using postfix (MTA) and dovecot (SMTP) on a vps running>arch linuxno issues with sending or receiving email from major providers like hotmail and gmail. i used to have issues with hotmail (outlook i think it's called now?) but not since setting up DMARC and the other related thing i forget the name of. basically just got bounced emails a couple times and implemented the things they complained about and haven't had issues since
>>108902682correction, dovecot is for IMAPemail is a confusing mess but you don't actually need to touch most of it. mine's been mostly hands-off (with the exception of the recent dovecot update...) so i've actually forgotten most of it
