Sliger SM580
My first ever ITX case. This case fucking ruled. It's a shame Sliger got out of the ITX game and went back to server racks.
The removable front panel for sata drive storage was genius, more itx cases should do it. I think the NR200 line from cooler master has it but those cases are pretty bulky and the newer revisions suck.

It doesn't fail or leak ever, and will cool 120w cpu's just fine. I will NEVER use an AIO. Anything that can go wrong will go wrong. If an AIO leaks it can take out your entire PC. If an air cooler fails, you replace the fan. Additionally, since it has two fans you can still use your PC while you wait on your replacement fan.

It doesn't matter if they're being used for data centers.
As demand for parts lower because some parts increase in price, they'll make less of the others.
That means an eventual price increase.

new to PC building but I have done some reading/looking around for how it's done and have an idea. I know it's basically like building legos though.
What the fuck do I get? All these fnacy model names and terms for the shitcum 400 TX series cpu or the poopcock iii3k motherboard. What the fuck is actually worthwhile to get? My budget is about 2500 cad with wiggle room so long as I can play games like Elden Ring smoothly and be able to play the next batch of fromsoft main releases that's good enough for me I can upgrade parts later.

>>108914210
Fact of the matter is modern games are technologically demanding. The amount of power needed to run these games at full force on a console would mean they would need to be 3x bigger, heavier, and drawing way more power. So essentially they would need to be a pc. It's why your pc draws twice or thrice the power of a console and GPUs are the size and weight of a console alone.
Super sampling was invented for this purpose. To attempt to upscale games while keeping the power consumption low enough that you don't need a mini fridge sized gaming rig to run it.
I don't know why this is so difficult for people to understand. Of course a console the size of a shoe box isn't going to run a game at native 4k. Of course a Switch 2 or Steam Deck the size of a book is going to need to run games at 720p otherwise they'd need to be the size of a laptop with cooling that sounds like a hair dryer.

I'm on the fence on whether I'm going to be buying the new 5800X3D 10th Anniversary edition to use with my existing AM4 motherboard in my closet and DDR4 kit, or if I'm going to bank on China's CXMT actually driving down DDR5 prices so I can justify just upgrading straight to a 9850X3D.

i had a msi b650 that i got a couple years ago or something, and my wifi was giving me trouble and being generally shit so i finally decided to just yolo and buy a new mobo. i got a overpriced rog x870 f gaming wifi mobo locally (for like 430 buckaroos) because i needed something same day so i could play terraria.
anyways it turned out the wifi 7 needs windows 11 so i unfortunately had to upgrade and its awful, but ive finally done some many tweaks its almost like windows 10 again, and i even got a windows 7 skin on it all
anyways its basically very gay overall but the mobo wifi works so thats cool. hopefully linux will get better wifi 7 support in the future so i can run pop os on this like i have on my laptop

Halo CE was one of the earliest games to incorporate bump/normal mapping

Halo CE had bullet casings looked like real metal shells, didn't disappear quickly but remained on the ground for a long time (nothing cooler to see tons of bullet shells scattered everywhere after a fire fight), and watching them realistically roll down hills.

Specular on bsp is all kinds of broken in Halo 2, different ways depending on version of the game. Bungie disabled it on many surfaces because of this. In MCC it has a broken directional computation, in Vista it just doesn't work at all

Halo 2's maps were so big the original Xbox couldn't handle it. Containment is the biggest map in Halo 2.

Halo 3 ran at 1152x640, it wasn't even 720p

>“[Y]ou could argue we gave you 1280 pixels of vertical resolution, since Halo 3 uses not one, but two frame buffers, both of which render at 1152×640 pixels,”a Bungie representativewrote. “The reason we chose this slightly unorthodox resolution and this very complex use of two buffers is simple enough to see: lighting. We wanted to preserve as much dynamic range as possible, so we use one for the high dynamic range and one for the low dynamic range values. Both are combined to create the finished on screen image.”

ODST didn't have any rain because the engine didn't support it

Reach's motion blur technique, like in Tekken 6, works on an individual object basis

>Reach's lighting system means that there can be upward of thirty or more light sources on screen at once, given off via weapons fire, explosions, and environmental lighting, such as the glow given off from lights inside buildings. All of these light sources are real-time, and interact with their surroundings. So a gunshot, or rounds from a Needler will light up surrounding areas, and change the shadows created by moving objects. Each individual projectile from the Needler also has its own light source

Just pick mint or maybe one of the gaming distros and then it will just work. Of course it's not perfect (I think nvidia has some issues and some games won't work) but for most people it should be fine.

>>108915345
here is a video that looks at it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkf7q4L5xl8
seems like the biggest issue at the moment, is getting software updated to take advantaged of the dual encoders / decoders on rdna 4. overall quality is now at a point nvidia really isn't "that" much better anymore.

they don't want this for the reason that most of the times only 1200W upwards PSU have two 12V-2x6 slots. Source 1, not Source 2
Source 1 basically doesn't scale past 4 cores, and it seems to care the most about single-core IPC with the lowest latency. Even a Raptor Lake i5 or an i3 if boosted high enough should be able to trounce Zen 3 in performance with such severe CPU bottlenecks and based on what I hear from people on Raptor Lake this seems to be the case. Whether they are on D5 or D4 I don't know, but I'd imagine it should be at least equal to Zen 3 with DDR4 in Source 1 games.

5950X was cheaper than the 5900XT for most of its time while performing better for some reason.

Don't most modded scripts for games run on a single thread? Script lag is a serious bottleneck with modding. Would that benefit from x3d cache?

Most games in general run all their shit on your core0 and by moving it off their with task manager or process lasso you improve everything.
>>
>>108917274
Yeah, but moving it off core0 has more to do with separating it from background processes. I'm talking about multithreaded (or not) games that are still stuck with single threaded mod scripts all stuck on the main core. I would imagine a game that is properly optimized would benefit more from core clock more tyan l3 cache, but modern multithreaded games seem to benefit from higher low caches. I'm just wondering if a multithreaded game that benefits from l3 cache would still see the same benefits when all it's modded scripts are dumped on a single thread.
>>
>>108917348
multithreaded game or not, moving the primary game thread off core 0 improves everything. do you even know what cppc is? core 0 is likely not your best boosting core and you probably also have hyperthreading on so its throwing it to the secondary thread on core 0 which has 30% of the capability of a real core like core 2. a dual ccx cpu is even worse in this regard as core 0 is the non cache core.
>>

This is literally what I did last night with Garry's Mod and it immediately gave me the same improvement as with TF2, but Zen 2 has a 4+4 CCX layout so I don't know how this would translate to a 5800XT or 5900X when in 8 thread mode with mcore_test enabled, nevermind the Intel CPUs. Disabled a ton of useless addons too that weren't needed.

Man, I considered buying one of these a few months ago but never went through with it because the 5800X3D rumors pacified me as much as "I'm never going to need that much performance so I got better things to spend money on" but I guess I was wrong yet again, friend of mine uses that exact chip in Source games and he gets about 3 or 4 times the frames I get without my potato config trickery.

Right now the 14700K costs the same as a 9800X3D which is stupid, seems like it also got hiked $100 like the 14600K which was $300 before going out of stock.

There's a i7-14700F OEM listing going on for $330 right now with limited supply, should I FOMO in? The 14700K is $465. This isn't a heavily gimped version now is it? Not like I plan to overclock anyway unless I can disable all those extra cores to free up power. ST should be on par with a 14600K even though the baseclock is suspiciously low?

Nope, X470 with 128GB of DDR4 3200. I concluded that the performance improvement over Zen 3 is potentially worth the cost of a motherboard swap. Which is easier said than done as far as finding a DDR4 motherboard for LGA 1700 that can run an i7 is concerned because I have completely forgotten what has enough VRMs and power stages to support that processor.

This chart is getting old, but it still gives you a rough idea of Zen 3 vs. LGA1700 gaming performance.
14700F will run games about as well as a 14600K, maybe slower shader precompilation because of the stricter power limit.

I just want to say that the Fractal North looks pretty but it's also kind of annoying, I recently built a PC for a friend using this case.
There is no way to neatly hide the cables for the CPU cooler, except shove them under the fan that's between the two towers.
The area over the front HDD caddy is open, so you can see the HDD or just a hole with some of the PSU cables shoved there.
The top air filter comes off way too easily, it should have had a thumbscrew.
