I will always be sorta sad I never built this with a women. Because I'll be asking myself, "does this new girl deserve to have it all?". I can provide for her easily and she won't need to work. I'm not letting me future wife take care of fat fucks in the hospital ICU, nor am I letting her get exposed to being control by another man or woman in an office. can anyone explain the hate for web dev? I feel like I have no presence at work. When I tell someone to follow basic troubleshooting steps, they don't listen, someone senior comes in, they listen to him, even though we said the same thing. It also feels like the operators themselves are undertrained. I do work at a school, so I get that students don't have intimate knowledge of these systems. But shouldn't the instructors? I feel like I'm halfway through the courses all of them are doing just by having to troubleshoot shit, and then trying to do the things they were trying to do to figure out why it failed, let alone what the fuck they're talking about when they do. Like if they're pushing buttons, and oh no! the button is unresponsive. Shouldn't they have an IA for that? In my job doing something similar, we had that kind of training, and I'd spend whole watches troubleshooting and generating reports. Even on something as simple as a range day, does someone have to come and clear your rifle for you? These guys are in the military, you'd think they would be used to their hardware and software failing and having initial troubleshooting steps and fallbacks. I know I did. But I was never in that element and am just a civilian worker for them now, so it's not my place to ask those sorts of questions. It's still really annoying, though, that the gear doesn't seem designed to respect the operator, and the operators burst into treats when any part of it fails.

I should ask both my unit and my real job if I can just be put on the courses these people are doing. I got to go on an exercise normally reserved for NCIOPs for some insane reason once, why not load me onto a real course for the helo tactical sensor people when I already literally work there and they're consolidating the trades anyway? Subsurface combat can't be that hard and surface combat must be even easier if the Falklands could win a war
In all seriousness, I'm concerned. When things go wrong at a school that is concerned with literal warfighting, the local tech should not be the first to go crazy-eyed when the systems spoonfeeding you from tactical sensors and widespread intelligence break. The student should have some IAs (Initial Actions -- what you do when something breaks)Just as when your rifle jams, you remember what you heard last, and if you don't remember that, unload, rack, tap, hope for a bang. I'm just a commsie, but even then, you're out of contact? Try someone else, if no one else answers, try a loop back, if that doesn't work, start checking wires, if it all fails, call up to the bridge and inform them you'll be putting up some flags. I get that in a training environment that things should Just Work for demonstration purposes, but you train as you fight, and nothing ever works quite right in the field. It's a good training opportunity -- "It should work this way, but if it doesn't, do that, and then it will, mostly." It's a struggle to even get the instructors to bring up the maintenance code screens so I even know what error codes are popping up before I start doing surgery. It's annoying.

I can't tell if I've become a better or worse person from having a job. I'm annoyed by a lot of the same sorts of stuff from the navy, I'm still a lazy person who creates a lot of jank when things enter crisis, and my biggest peeve is dumb stuff that creates major crises when it could have been simply janky and working a little bit instead of a total crisis. and for not being an instructor, I hate the instructors. "train as you fight" and all that, but on the one hand, the children deserve better, but on the other, they should be introduced to and acclimated to reality as quickly as possible.

Half a year ago I landed a comfy job as a data engineer in pharma (EU). The pay isn't as good as in other places but it's still above average. The good thing is that the workload is usually low, so I was thinking about creating projects or a second income stream instead of focusing on getting a higher paying job. Is this strategy viable? Has anyone done something similar?
>>109013924>creating projectsA huge meme. It wasn't worth it before vibecoding and it especially isn't worth it now.

I'm about to go into my final year of college and I've refused to use AI for the majority of it. The most I've ever used it for was some minor debugging here and there, and I find that it actually typically slows me down more than it helps, as whatever error I'm facing is usually not caught by the AI. Is there any jobs that would even take someone like me right now? I understand that these places will eventually be looking for people who can actually program without relying on AI, but I don't know if we are fully at that point yet and I expect that even still they'd prefer to hire someone who is comfortable with using it. I'm also planning on moving to Japan in at least a year from now, so I don't know how different things will be there (I'm in the US right now.) I also just don't really know what else I should learn at this point; moreso I don't know where to start as most of what I've done has been gamedev specific and I haven't done anything with databases or web development. Any ideas as to where to start with that kind of thing for someone who genuinely knows nothing about either of them would be great lol.
>>109014184Can't say how it is in japan, but currently all companies in the west only want people who vibecode. There are very very few companies who correctly put a premium on people who know what they're doing, and the situation inhouse is really dreadful. Morale is very low among good developers because they get angry as fuck having to trudge through ai code that never works, but management doesn't care and just adds more ai use kpi's.
>performance review meeting today What do we think? Less than 3%? More than 3%?
>>109014184What makes you think you can just “move” to Japan? Anyway you’re in luck that country is extremely backwards, they probably still code in notepad before printing and faxing each other the source code

>>109014117This is something you work out in therapy because it's ultimately a confidence issue and how your own personal beliefs align (or not) with your company.Because objective intelligence isn't all that meaningful for most companies. It's great, on a personal level, if you can identify and work through extremely complex problems, but tech business is driven by KPI and often revolves around a CRUD or adjacent product. KPIs aren't hard concepts to understand, and CRUD products aren't hard to develop.Like, if intelligence was all.that mattered, at a minimum we'd see more practical applications of leetcode hard problems to a product, but obviously that's not how billion dollar apps are made.Your best course of action is to forget about dunning kruger altogether. It's not a productive philosophical exercise. TL;DR comparing yourself to others is loser shit.

guys I am currently in training to become an IT-specialist. Besides school this includes 2x 3 months internship at a business for the practical parts. First year of school was fun and I got good grades, until I got to the first internship at a managed service provider. >>109015381It will never be terminated. That's literally the entire way that consultant works. First, they have 20 contracts at once. They bill 40h+ each (sometimes they bill 80 and pretend they have 2 people working on the project, actually they just personally work 1h a week on the project). Second, they drag the shit out of the timeline to make as much money as possible. The best way to get a contract terminated is to finish ahead of schedule. If you're late but have partial results, then there is a sunk cost effect and the company will often extend.

I have over 20 years of experience. I recently got a new role at company none of you have ever heard of. Since I have been there I have been shocked on how much people rely on AI. For example:>Entire PR’s are just prompted, no one knows how they work but they just put up a 1000 line change and the reviews just rubber stamp it>AI introduces bugs and no one knows how to fix them. Last week we had an entire deployment fail and a whole team of devs didn’t know how to debug it and were told to “just use Claude”>No one gets stuck anymore. This is really weird to me. That touch point where you get another coworker to help you out and you get to know each other better just doesn’t exist>Capacity just doesn’t matter anymore. Get swamped with work? Just have AI agents do it! Yes I’ve been directed to do just that>Everyone is forgetting how to code and no one seems to care. I haven’t heard a single architecture discussion or even a basic coding discussion since I’ve started. This is such a massive contrast from what I experienced for years and years and I feel like I’m going insane
>>109015838AI works great for small-ish projects started from the ground up with AI. But sadly most projects aren't like that and that puts a serious dent on what AI can do. In the hands of a competent dev who knows how to program it still can make them a lot faster.

>>109015725can you tell me about your 50 year loan term and why it is actually a good financial decision?
>>109015838Same thing here, but the thing that is most puzzling to me is I've been there just short of a year now. When I started everyone was strongly anti-ai. Now everyone is still strongly anti-ai except the boss who is pushing everyone to use ai in the exact way you describe, and personally pushes ai code and ai-rubber-stamps code that doesn't work etc. And it's breaking in just the ways you describe. We had a problem where m$ is retarded and their shit portal is broken for submitting office addons. I pointed out it's impossible to do a few operations (it's as per m$'s official docs...) and I was told that's not true and to just ask claude to find the button to do the thing... look at and do fucking what? What is claude supposed to do? How is it even supposed to know what the context even is since the whole thing can only be accessed through 50 portals under 80 vpns anyway? But that's all the bossman can say these days.

>it's only tuesday
>>109015889tl;dr: the rate is a small fraction of the global market, mortgage can be frozen for years if I lose my job, mortgage insurance (pays for entire mortgage costs if I lose my job and shit) costs nothing but I don't even need it at this time, even if I lost my job tomorrow I'd still be saving lots of money for the next 9 months before being about even for the next 4 so losing the mortgage is impossible, real estate price is implicitly controlled and the market is very quick (15-30 anywhere in the country to close) so the growth always dramatically outpaces cash down requirements, allowing easy trade in anytime (up or down). Standard repayment clauses on early payment etc.I currently have a rolling plan which can be bound at any moment, and the bound rate would need to go up 4% before it would equal market rate and thus not be as nice anymore. But even at the height of the chink flu it still didn't manage to reach that level just quite. This is about why the 50 years is great: in a word, because the gap between the payment on a higher amortization scheme (which I can afford easily) and the market rate is high, rent is about 30% higher, and inflation is a thing, taking a longer mortgage is always worth it. The same dynamics don't exist in america right now because your rates are only a bit under market, so the tiniest movement will put you in a bad spot.
