I just finished four rounds of interviews for a Senior Software Engineer role in Austin. The LinkedIn listing clearly stated a salary range of $85k to $105k. I know I am a bit younger for a senior title, but I have the technical skills, projects, and portfolio to justify something around $90k.

The process seemed great. The hiring manager liked my ideas, and they kept saying they needed someone to modernize their backend systems and improve their engineering workflows. Then the offer letter arrived this morning, and I thought it had been sent to the wrong person.

The base salary was $55k.

They also sent a “Total Compensation” PDF claiming the package was worth $92k by including the cost of health insurance, a non-guaranteed 15% bonus, and a $5k “Professional Development Value” for access to an internal video library nobody uses.

I called HR to ask if the base pay was a mistake. The rep talked to me like I did not understand compensation, then brought up culture, career growth, and “unlimited snacks” as if those pay rent. She said $55k was competitive when considering the company’s “holistic investment” in my future.

They want senior-level engineering work for entry-level pay, then expect a benefits chart to make the offer look reasonable.

I spent around twelve hours on the coding assignment and interviews just to get an offer that felt insulting. It seems like some companies post higher ranges to attract strong candidates, then hope people are too invested to walk away. I asked them to withdraw my application, and HR sounded offended that I did not find the offer compelling.

Back to the drawing board. This market is exhausting.

In think in the vast majority of places, redundancies are a lot simpler than random firings, by design. Usually still with a bunch of red tape, but if an employer generally has no need for you they may be able to push it through without too much trouble.
You doing basically no work for months up till today could seasily serve as good evidence in favour of a redundancy, depending on how the laws are structured. Unless you want to hire an employment lawyer I would be wary. I'm always a proponent of upskilling and diversifying your capabilities.
