yeah it's unfortunate isn't it? theming is hard in general now. it's still mostly possible on linux, but it's downright almost impossible on windows now without installing random rootkits and making your PC slow as shit and buggy just to theme it.

I have a .reg file that renames .jfif back to .jpg whenever Windows decides to change it for some goddamn reason. It's been happening for years and no one talks about it.

the shape was still a rectangle, the magic was in the use of either alpha channels or masks

Many of these were visually based on LC-displays. K-Jöföl especially (it even had that fading effect like the real ones).
Kinda wild how there are now generations growing up that don't even know that type of display anymore so if they saw these UIs they wouldn't really understand it or simply don't know that at some point in time most displays looked like that, especially on music players

both winblows and X11 can do shaped windows without compositing

Everyone should have this, also set as autorun on startup.
Sometimes alt+f4 just doesn't work when shit hangs too hard, but this does.

MS's Always On Top Utility does just what it says, letting you hotkey to pin a currently in-focus window to stay on top/in front while you interact with other active windows at the same time.

you're describing windows XP ricing, windows has never at any point supported ricing
if anything it's mostly the same if not a little bit better now, there's just less variety because no one can be inspired or creating when picking out a stylish outfit for their rapist

Can someone point me in the right direction how to do this with linux? I meant having a custom window with an existing program.

a few possible options according to gpt

>Reparent the Window (X11 only)
On X11, a program can create its own window and embed another application's window inside it.

Tools/libraries:
Xlib
XCB
Qt (QWindow::fromWinId)
GTK (GtkSocket/GtkPlug, older)

>Transparent Overlay Window
Create a transparent always-on-top window that follows the target window.

The overlay:
Tracks movement/resizing.
Draws custom PNG graphics.
Ignores mouse input.

This works on both X11 and Wayland more often than reparenting.

Qt example:
Qt::FramelessWindowHint
Qt::WindowTransparentForInput
Qt::WindowStaysOnTopHint

>xwinwrap-like Solution
For a retro launcher project, many people:
Remove the application's titlebar.
Create a transparent PNG frame window.
Keep it synchronized via:
xprop
xdotool
wmctrl
and a small script.

This is often the easiest way to get a Windows 95-style or game-themed frame around one application.

Wait, XMMS supports Modern skins, or does it use it's own skinning system? I know it's 1:1 compatible with classic Winamp skins.

As for utilities, these are Windows centric but a few are multi-platform so:
GlazeWM
YASB Reborn
Flow Launcher
Total Commander
XnShell
Bulk Crap Uninstaller
gsudo
HxD Hex Editor
K-Lite Codec Pack w/ MPC-HC
Link Shell Extension
NAPS2
NVCleanstall
ocenaudio
Peace Equalizer
Rainmeter
ScreenToGif
Textify
Winaero Tweaker
WinUtil
WizTree

Don't know what you mean.
You can still have wacky designs.
In fact I still use my media player with skins I've been using for 2 decades.
>>
>>109075972
media players like that are pretty much the only things left that let you do that. he probably meant that the average program in general doesn't come with interesting design.
>>
>>109070937
depends what you mean by obscure. but i have some stuff perhaps.
>SoundSwitch
a very simple program that lets me switch the default audio device using a keyboard shortcut
>Shellfolderfix (get it from the majorgeeks site)

remembers the size, position and display type of every explorer windows. very useful if you have many folders or shortcuts to them on your desktop. i tested it on win7, 10, 11.
